Monday I start peddlin' peaches.

So if you are in Washington state, you should totally come get some really fantastic peaches.

And white nectarines. They'll have white nectarines for a brief time. Those go really fast though, either because they ripen quickly or people get to them first thing.

Seriously, people drive thousands of miles and cross country borders to buy some every year.

Spent the morning doing an interview for a feature with the woman I sell peaches for. It was delightful and we spent most of the time off-topic. She's just such a fun person to talk with. As she's mentioned before, it's funny that there's such a gap in our ages (she's old enough to be my grandmother) and yet we enjoy many of the same things and have similar opinions.

Don't know when the peaches will start this year yet. Won't know until they actually do.

Meanwhile, I get to muddle through the proposed school district budget for '09-'10 for the article on July's school board meeting. The business manager even told me it was the most confusing budget he'd ever done, since a lot of the funding is hypothetical at this point and just because the numbers aren't in one fund, doesn't mean they're not in another. So I'm going to look back through my notes and what my editor would like and what the packet actually says and see if I need to call him and go, "Okay, explain this to me again please..."

But beside that, I've finished a book and a TV series (posting about it later, maybe) and have started A Study in Scarlet. There are popsicles in the freezer and two fantastically cool rooms in the house. My Headache from Hell has not return since Sunday. I am excited about people coming over for the rodeo and people maybe coming over for the Best Peaches in the World, No Seriously and others coming over just to hang out. Things are pretty good.

Yea! )

And released on DVD!

5. Not having to get up at 5:30 in the morning to sit for eight hours selling peaches. Yea, sleep!

Fringe

I was completely prepared to dislike the pilot of Fringe last night based solely on the fact that JJ Abrams is behind it. It's not that I dislike JJ Abrams, I just think he's a little overrated. And that's based on the fact that I stopped watching Lost after season one.

Anyway. Fringe. I liked it. Definitely more than I thought I would. Even after watching three hours of TV beforehand, it wasn't a chore to sit through the hour and a half pilot.

Spoilers )

I'd like to say more about plot, but I'm back to selling peaches today. Which means I have to be there in half an hour.

Good Times

It's been a really nice couple of weeks. I spent the 8th through the 10th in Spokane with [livejournal.com profile] ginnith and her roommates. Had a really great time and by the time I left, my face and abs hurt from laughing so much.

This last week was spent, besides Monday and Tuesday, selling peaches. Which basically means I sat in the shade and read a lot, only getting up to lug boxes to cars, take money and make change, or direct people into the orchard. Not exactly taxing. Except for the part where it's been miserably hot.

Seriously, this family/group from Canada stopped by on Friday (at least their license plate was Canadian) and wanted to pick during the hottest part of the day. I'm not going to tell people not to go pick if that's what they want, but I feel bad for people who show up in those couple of intense hours and want to head out there. Bad for them and worried about them. I don't mind getting on the three-wheeler to go pick up boxes, but I'd rather not have to go pick up someone who's collapsed.

One of the women in the group was pregnant, too. She came back to the shop not long into and I got her some water and we chatted for a bit. It's a nice break from reading.

Saturday, the whole family went to the rodeo. My parents got to meet up with their own friends and I got to meet up with mine. I always think the rodeo drags a little bit and the ending is always weirdly abrupt, but I still enjoy myself. It was kind of fun watching the guy parachute in this year. The only downside was the 101 degree weather at 6:00 PM. ICK.

I think one of the best things about the last few weeks has been realizing that my friends are a lot more accessible to me than I sometimes think they are. I've been calling a couple of them fairly randomly and fairly often. It's kind of great.

Now this next weekend, [livejournal.com profile] olivelavonne is coming over to stay for a few days! Yea! Then we're going to take her and a bunch of peaches back to Seattle. Plus, a mutual friend of ours from SU may be stopping by since she's going to a concert at the Gorge. I'm looking forward to it.
annundriel: ([pr] Lighten Up; It's Just Fashion!)
I wussed out on the peaches today. All I was doing was sitting in the shade and it was still miserable. Ick.

I've been up since 5:45 and selling peaches since 7:00. Not so bad, considering that after I sweep the shop I really just have to sit there and peddle peaches to people wishing to purchase them. (Alliteration! Yea!) But still. It's setting my alarm for before 6:00 that gets me.

It looks like this is going to be a good year. A lot of the peaches are the size of softballs. Or as my mom likes to say, "They're the size of a baby's head." They're big and beautiful and while I haven't eaten one yet, I can tell that they're delicious. They always are. They certainly smell delicious when I open the cooler.

One woman bought 26 boxes. Each box approximating 22 pounds. That's a lot of fruit. Granted, she was buying boxes for lots of friends. It was a lot of fruit shifting.

I also helped a little boy named Angel fix his bike. It wasn't completely better, but it wasn't falling apart anymore. Go me.

This afternoon I'm heading to Spokane to spend the weekend with [livejournal.com profile] ginnith and her roommates. WOO. This will be my first time driving that sort of distance completely on my own, so that's exciting in it's own way.

Right now I'm thinking Google Maps is way better than MapQuest. MapQuest was totally trying to get me lost, I'm sure of it.

Next Wednesday I start selling peaches. I am both excited (YUM, peaches as big as your head!) and wary (BLAH, bad customers). They're actually starting on Monday, but I'm tied down to the library. People keep texting me to ask about the peaches, so I'll be glad to tell them that they'll get their yearly fix soon. Because, oh boy, goooooood fruit.

Oh, and white nectarines!! There had better be more of those this year. ::crosses fingers::

Also, it's fair/demolition derby/rodeo week. I'm undecided about going. Last year I went to the rodeo because [livejournal.com profile] olivelavonne was here and she'd never been. But after an hour or so of sitting there surrounded by people that are more my dad's friends, I get a little bored. And the fair, well, I like looking around at the animals and crafts and things (plus, mmm, ice cream and cotton candy), but I'm not too big on rides and games. Not really something I'm going to go alone, too. I'm still considering the rodeo, though, since Dad is so gung-ho about getting a group of people together. Social butterfly that he is.

Still

People still suck, generally. Today two puppies were abandoned at our mailbox. This isn't the first time this has happened. Nor, I expect, will it be the last.

At this point, there isn't a set decision as to what we're going to do with them. We'll probably take both of them to a shelter, though. Three dogs seems to be our limit.

Which reminds me, we've got three dogs again because Grandma recently got seven year old black lab. Her name's Reba. And while Grandma seems to think she's got the personality of a stick, I think she's sweet.

Other than that, it looks like I'm finished with the peach selling business.

Well

Guess who's super popular these days?

Turns out I will not be training at the library tomorrow. The family I've been working for has a funeral to attend Monday and can't find anyone to watch the shop. So it's back to me. Will have to work out some other time to get to the library next week.

All of this is completely fine by me. Work is work. Although it would be nice to not have to sit outdoors all day now that it's starting to get a bit chilly.

In the last two days, I finished two books. Now I don't know what to read. Too many choices!
annundriel: (Quietly Rearranged (mummy))
Thursday and Friday I am back to "playing at work." At least, that's what Dan calls it. And it's true. Selling peaches when someone approaches you and spending the rest of the day reading in the shade, enjoying a nice breeze is not exactly hard work.

This time around, I'll be pushing the early Elbertas. I'm expecting it to be less busy, but we'll see.

Also, things are looking good after the job interview I had last week. The position I applied for was "substitute librarian" and everyone involved in the area has been pushing for me. The interview itself seemed, at least at the time, more like a formality because they spoke in terms of "when" and not "if." Which, yes, people can do even if you're not going to get the job, but there were really good vibes. And it's really not a steady job, because they can't absolutely guarantee me work and I'll be entering something of a pool, but it's a start!

Now today I hear that the librarian in Royal talked to my mother (the library is across the parking lot from the store where Mom works) and wants to train me next Monday so I can work next week.

Plus, I ran into my second grade teacher at the bookstore last week and she asked if I'd be interested in volunteering at school. Apparently she's moved up to teaching third grade and could use some assisting occasionally. I'd never want to teach grade school myself, but I'm perfectly willing to spend a few hours with the kids.

Meanwhile, today we took the Explorer in to be checked out. I guess the "check engine" light has been on for the last four days. Mom suspects that it only shut off today because the light bulb burnt out. Had a lovely dinner. Did some shopping. THE OFFICE SEASON 3 FTW!!
annundriel: (In the Tall Grass (sga))
I feel bad that all I seem to post about is work lately. And work's not even that exciting.

But today we weighed a peach that was almost a pound. Apparently in years past they have had a peach that weighed a pound and a half. That's a meal and a snack right there.

Meanwhile, the praying mantis from yesterday:

annundriel: (Space Between (pv))
Today I -

- was attacked by a praying mantis. Seriously.

- helped a lady who looked weirdly like Torri Higginson.

- thought I was going to die of boredom. I may love reading, but there's only so much you can do before you need some sort of distraction.
annundriel: (These Words of War (sga))
At work today I got a telephone call from a customer that made me cry.

"I was there last Thursday and picked nine boxes of peaches. Every peach had a worm in it. I just wanted you to know how disappointed we, as well as several other families from Ritzville, are. We are embarrassed to even give peaches to friends. Plus, we paid ten cents more for these than we would have if we'd gotten them elsewhere. I feel like we were really robbed. Make sure you tell one of the actual family members so they know. I don't think we'll be coming back, along with those other families, next year."

Basically.

My response was along the lines of, "You picked them yourself? I'm sorry you were disappointed. I'll make sure they know."

I should have pushed the "self picked" part harder. Because it is not, as I've said before, my/our fault if you can't recognize good fruit from bad. It's really, really not. If you are picking them yourself, whatever you end up with is your own fault. The ones we pick and store? Pretty damn good.

I had so many passive-aggressive type things I wanted to say to this man. And while I'm allowed to tell them it's their problem, it's hard to keep from passing into meanness. So I toned it down. But, oh, I wanted to really pound in the fact that he handled the fruit, nothing was hidden, and that if he wanted to save money he should have gotten peaches elsewhere in the first place. Bastard.

But I'm too nice to actually tell people things like that to their face. Or over the phone in this case.

I'm still really frustrated.

It was really hot today, business was slow, and I was bored. Then this call came and it just pushed me over the edge. So I vented to Mom when she drove up seconds later with a blended mocha.

I'm finding it really funny when I get one customer who complains about the quality of the peaches this year and then the next customer comes out of the orchard and comments on how good things are liking this year and how much luck they had. Clearly some people just are not looking hard enough. I was warned about this.

So I've started telling people to be really fussy over what they pick because we don't want them unhappy with their fruit. Seriously, if you don't like it, don't pick it.

One of the first couples there this morning asked how the crop was and I told them we were having some problems with worms. "But, hey, that means they're organic," I added. The woman laughed and said, "Good for you." It kind of made my morning. No one else has seemed to catch that I'm making the best of something unfortunate and not be completely serious.

Today I got free cucumbers. Yum!
annundriel: (Jeremy (sn))
Dear Customers,

Please don't complain to me when the peaches you pick yourself are hard. 1) It's not my fault you can't find the slightly more ripe ones and 2) let them sit for a couple of days, they'll be just perfect. Just, y'know, don't be mean about it.

Some General Annoyance,
Me

Of course, I guess I could be helpful in pointing out where the slightly more ripe ones are. Except that I can't really leave the base of operations and, as Dan said, it's kind of like fishing. The perfect ones are out there; you just have to find them.

I do love opening up the cooler and being hit with the smell of peaches. Yum.

Finished reading The Ruby in the Smoke by Philip Pullman today. I was unimpressed. (I'd say more, but I should go to bed. So maybe tomorrow.) I'm just having trouble reading things these days it seems. Still not finished with Deathly Hallows. I'm reluctant. And not going to take it to work with me because it will just get dirty from being outside. Seriously, it was slightly breezy today and every time I set down my calculator it collected a layer of dust. I still feel all dried out and thirsty.

Also just watched Wolf Creek. Which was disturbing. Geez. Tomorrow Mom and I are supposed to go to the movies. Hopefully there will be singing and dancing and shiny colors.

Peachy

First day of work over and done with. I haven't really mentioned it here, but for the rest of the summer I'm helping a local family sell their peaches and nectarines. And, omg, let me just say these are basically the best peaches EVER. I was given one to take home, with the offer of more, and I keep catching a whiff of its scent and, oh, just the smell is delicious.

This morning I was supposed to be there at seven. At least, that's what Sheila told me yesterday. Dan suggests I wait until nine tomorrow. I am absolutely fine with that. As long as I don't have to wake up at 5:30, I'm good.

Even that wasn't so bad. I'm used to doing things without a lot of sleep. And today I mostly swept (a lot) and cleaned the shop. Though I did answer the phone quite a bit and sold two boxes of peaches. Woo.

Speaking of "woo," I completely forgot how much fun it is to ride a three-wheeler. WOO.

Oh, I should add that though I was supposed to be selling things, everyone forgot to leave me any cash to make change with. Luckily, the guy who wanted me to break a hundred was able to write a check instead.
