Holy Crap

OMG you guys, a girl very probably broke her nose during dodgeball today.

Which totally confused me, since the balls we were using were kind of like Nerf balls only maybe a little softer. I found out from the school secretary at the end of the day that one of the boys had bent to get a ball and she got hit with his head when he straightened back up.

The swelling had gone down by the time I saw her again in the office 6th period and it didn't look too bad. She was still in tears, but heading out to get it looked at.

Geeeeez.

Also, who knew there were like fifty bazillion ways to play dodgeball?
annundriel: ([sga] Smile)
We pick up newspapers meant for recycling at our city hall to put down for the puppies. Mom found this note written a child's scrawl:

Dear Kaylee,

So did you want to do watch a movie, dunk our heads in a bucket of water and maybe Fourwheeler or computer?

ok so call me after school

ok

ok

bye bye
Gracie

It made us laugh. There is so little to do out here, kids dunk their heads in buckets of water for fun.

Y'know, I probably dunked my head in a bucket of water for fun and for lack of anything better to do back in the day, too.

God save me from 8th grade girls. Geeeez.

I mean, not all of them. (I was an awesome 8th grade girl, for example.) But the ones in first period PE are just...frustrating. Actually, that whole class is kind of frustrating.

But during the actual activities of the entire day, the other teacher put the radio on over the gym speakers and they played Kris Allen, Adam Lambert, Lady Gaga, and Muse practically in a row. I was very happy.

And got to be the woman in charge of the scoreboard buzzer. POWER, I HAZ IT.

I am disappointed that some of the worst kids throughout the day were kids that regularly use the library. Where they generally don't cause problems. Peer pressure. Ugh.

Two kids in my class got sent to the principal for wearing gang shirts.

Anyhoo. Project Runway tonight! May it be less boring than last season!
annundriel: ([spn] I Have the Power)
It's probably wrong to feel gleeful when the other PE teacher tells you the kids will probably run the next day. But, oh, it's nice being on the other side of the equation for a change! Also, some of those kids...Grr. ::shakes fist::

You know you're in trouble when the other teacher tells you, "Fifth period you've got about, oh, five of the worst human beings on the planet."

It wasn't that they're disruptive or disrespectful, they've simply turned Doing Nothing into an art form.

Was Health today, but will be PE the rest of the week as there WERE NO LESSON PLANS. I was supposed to call the teacher, but she never got back to me.

I did get a good start on my port article. Yea, multitasking! I still have the fire district meeting to go to tonight.

Oh, that reminds me of something that annoys me work-wise. Especially in regards to subbing at the school. )

So I am mostly using this mood (originally "mischievous") because it is seriously one of my favorite Castiel moments/looks in SPN. I NEED AN ICON.

But now I'm going to go find a heater and/or blanket and curl up with Guards! Guards! until I have to leave again.

I feel a bit like I've been steamrollered.

When I sub at the library, I'm the only one there, I don't have a lunch break, and we're not supposed to eat in front of patrons. I don't think I was alone in the library all day. By the time four o'clock hit I was getting a little cranky.

Not that anyone would have noticed. I am that awesome. ;)

But I still feel steamrollered. There was never a huge rush, but it was definitely a steady stream of people.

The reason? The kids got a snow day and school was closed. Dad drove Mom and me into work. There was no way we were doing that with the fog and slick roads.

Oh! I got one of the really quiet kids that comes in to talk to me for an extended period of time! She's working her way through A Series of Unfortunate Events. I've read the first three, so I asked her how it was going. She elaborated on the series. It was great.

Same girl from this post, actually.

I have articles and fic to work on and absolutely no motivation. Blah.

Exciting!

MY COUSIN EB IS ENGAGED!!

I am super excited for her. And we all like the fiancee, so that's a plus.

We caught up on a lot of things on the phone last night. It's always great talking with her. And, on a really ridiculous level, I'm quite pleased that after getting her hooked on SPN when she was over, she succeeded on getting the fiancee hooked. He usually only wants to watch foreign films about the Holocaust (or so we hear), so I am impressed. I feel like a very successful TV pimp.

Meanwhile, I have Adam Lambert stuck in my head. I've been listening to quite a bit o fhim and Lady Gaga recently. What can I say? I have eclectic music tastes. My mp3 player will go from Ennio Morricone to Muse to the Rolling Stones to Kelly Clarkson.

Anyway, this reminds me that last Wednesday, two of the usual boys were in the library. I want to put them at about...8 to 10 years old. They both got on the laptops and were looking for music videos and then one of them started singing along to Lady Gaga's "Paparazzi." I just about died.

Why didn't I stop him singing aloud in a library? There wasn't really anyone there. Though earlier there was an absolute horror of a family and I did actually have to go into the children's section and pull the, "Can you guys keep it down, please? You're in a library."

Look at me, having authority.

Speaking of Morricone, most recently I've been listening to the score from The Legend of 1900 (first thing I ever saw Tim Roth in). Particularly this piece and this one. I love them.

You know what is awesome?

When a kid comes into the library and asks you if any of their ordered books came in. You tell them, "At least one of them so far. The fourth Lemony Snicket," and turn around to the hold shelf because you just scanned it in.

And then you hand it to them and their entire face lights up and they beam at you across the desk because they just finished the third book that day and you have just...handed them the keys to the kingdom, y'know?

You just know they're going to go home and devour that book.

When it's one of the more quiet kids and you make them actually grin like that just by providing them with a book they were looking forward to, well.

It's brilliant.

Heh. So I was going to post a mini writing-related rant, but looking over the thing that was bugging me, I realized it wasn't worth it.

By which I mean that it's actually not really a rant-worthy thing at all, not that I don't want to spend energy on a rant. If that makes sense.

Basically, sometimes I am just dumb and cranky. This is usually the result of seven hours at the library and an hour+ at school board. (The school board could cause a rant, but I don't have articulate arguments for my own stance on certain issues, so I'm going to keep my trap shut.)

I am feeling stressed about the article, though.

I helped a little girl (I'm going to guess...2nd or 3rd grade) spell some things today (Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Hannah Montana) and she looked at me over the desk and said, "You're really nice." So, y'know, that made me feel good.

Meanwhile, fic writing is going really well. Yea!

Elementary

I lead a life of excitement and varied employment.

The '09-'10 school year started at the end of August. Today was my first subbing day. Got the call at 7:15 this morning from the school secretary and not the automated system. Which pretty much means I'll say yes as long as I don't have something else to do. I have a bad habit of hanging up on the automated system. ::shame::

But it was an emergency, so I went in. Subbed for a position that's new this year. I traveled around the school, going to one class in each grade (K-5) for 45 minutes doing Weekly Reader and Time for Kids. TFK was about the California wildfires and WR was fire prevention. I also got to lug around a 45 lbs. backpack to demonstrate how heavy some of the equipment a firefighter carries is.

I was sort of dreading kindergarten and first grade, the last two classes of the day, because filling 45 minutes with kids that age can be difficult if you've only been given so much material to work with. And thrown in there. But they were my favorite classes of the day. Definitely the most well behaved and quiet. I was super impressed.

One of the IAs in the kindergarten helped teach me in first grade. The first grade teacher taught my brother (now 21) in kindergarten. Crazy!

But it really was a pretty good day, even if I am now losing my voice. I saw a bunch of my library kids (haha, my library kids) and even got a drive-by hug from one of them, which was awesome.

You know, I really do not want to teach (because, wow, that is a lot of work and some crazy politics) and when I thought I did it was never elementary, but I do love being at the elementary now as a sub. Kids can be little punks and brats and loud and annoying, but they can be really great, too.

The principal wanted to know if I could do this again this week since now I understand what the position needs/asks for and the woman I was subbing for may not be back due to her father being ill. Unfortunately, Wednesday and Thursday I'm subbing at the public library.

I still have city council tonight. I'm hoping I don't actually fall asleep.

Unsafe

I don't like that in our little no-traffic-lights town kids are afraid of gangs following them. Yesterday I finished the day at the library and had a group of kids ask me what they should do if they are followed. It makes me really worried for them.

Especially since last Thursday something almost went down in the parking lot across the street from the library. I only worked part of the day so I missed it, but I heard all about it from the regular librarian yesterday. She called me after it happened, too. And Mom saw part of it.

You've got the gang sporting red surrounded by the gang sporting blue and their both across the street posturing in the bank parking lot. So the librarian called the police department and got the police chief and told him he should check it out. At this point the two 10-12 year old boys in the library looked up, noticed what was happening, and bolted.

The police chief and several others showed up. It was all moved to the park.

Nothing happened. There was talk that they'd been rousted out of another local town. But just because nothing happened then, doesn't mean it won't. And that scares the crap out of me.

I know what I'm supposed to do if something does happen. That doesn't make it any better.

Other than being a nice person in general, this is why I am nice to all of our library patrons. Especially after that newspaper tagging incident.
annundriel: ([spn] Detective Story)
So far, this Dean/Castiel thing is the longest piece of fanfiction I've attempted. And I'm not even finished. Which I am really proud of. Still freaked out though. [livejournal.com profile] ginnith has been great for listening to me ramble and ramble about the fic and the show. And calming me down.

I swear one day I will stop posting about it. Right now, though, it's kind of the main thing on my mind.

Meanwhile, last year 101 kids signed up for the Summer Reading Program at the library throughout the summer. At three days in yesterday, 103 kids had already signed up. I signed up about eight more today. It's going to be crazy.
annundriel: ([misc] Books)
The Summer Reading Program has officially started at the library. This is great for the kids, but a nightmare-like zoo for the librarians (zombie orangutans! oh no!). Subs get 40 hours of extra work-time to come in and assist. I felt like Sisyphus today, only instead of a boulder I had a never ending stream of returned books and DVDs to reshelve.

But it had it's moments of amusement.

When the kids sign up, they get a reading log where they write down all of the library books they read (they can't count books they own or get elsewhere) and then keep track of the time in 15 minute increments. For every hour, they get a prize. (I got smarties and a tootsie roll just for being awesome.) But the kids aren't all entirely honest about how much they read and how much time it takes. The smart ones would realize that we can tell when a new library book has been returned unread. If you're going to lie about it, check out a book that already has a cracked spine. We might never know you're lying! Though we probably will.

These two brothers came in several times throughout the day (and never remembered to actually collect their prizes) and their claimed time kept changing. Shannon gave them new reading logs because they'd included non-library books. The younger brother was standing at the desk, refilling his out and this conversation occurred:

KID: Which ones did I really read?
SHANNON: What did you just say?
KID: Uhhh...
SHANNON: Did you hear him?
ME: Maybe he meant which did he read most intently?

Which I just explained to Mom like this, "'I really read that book,' not just, 'I read that book.' Y'know, like, 'I read that book so hard I kicked its ass.'"

It gave me a much needed laugh.

Later there was talk about a crawdad convention/lecture that would have Ted Nugent in attendance. I...don't even know. There was sarcasm and silliness involved and at one point I said, "Oh yeah, I'd say crawdads and me are like this ::crosses fingers:: except that would be gross."
annundriel: ([b] Brennan)
Today was better. I worked at the library and that kicked me out of my own head for a while. So. That's something.

Plus, kids like me. And when kids like you, that must mean you have something to offer. Enjoyed bonding over books with them.

Was freaked out by a guy who came in asking about the regular librarian. Like, warning-bells-ringing freaked out. But I think I was being paranoid.

Now I'm going to go watch clips of Misha Collins.
annundriel: (Default)
Got a call a little before 5:20 this morning asking if I could sub today. Ended up with a half-day with fourth graders.

I heard, "You're really tall" a lot. Yup, kids, I am. You're not the only ones to notice, either.

I also got several comments/questions about my Tiffany bean necklace.

Meanwhile, I was really happy with my hair today.

Picture! Because who doesn't want to see a Myspace-style self-portrait? )

I've got a haircut scheduled June 6 and other than shorten the back (because omg it's driving me crazy and I will never survive the heat), I'm not sure what I want to do. Keep the bangs? Grow them out? Get them trimmed? ::shrug:: I also want to dye my hair again, but I don't know if I want to go red or darker brown. Opinions?

Coconut italian sodas are the best summer drinks ever. Yum.

Mom and I are watching season four of Supernatural out of order. I may be on my way to developing an unhealthy interest in Castiel.

Resolution

May. 19th, 2009 11:00 am
annundriel: ([ds] Maintain the Right)
Today is the special election to adopt a resolution for the school district to issue $7.8 million in general obligation bonds to fund construction that will relieve overcrowding by expanding and renovating the schools.

They tried this before in February and it failed, for several reasons: the size of the tax increase, the amount of bonds, the amount of construction, discontentment with school officials. All of the reasons, while some of them were quite sound and understandable, frustrated me beyond belief. Particularly the discontentment with school officials.

Administrators will not be in the district forever. There will always be children in the community, though, and those children need school facilities. So suck it up, get over it, and do something about helping the students. Because where else are they supposed to go to school out here?

After the last time, the bond committee got together and sent out a survey asking people what the committee could do to make them change their minds. This new resolution is based on the results.

If this bond resolution doesn't get passed this time, I don't know what they're going to do. I know with the economy being what it is, people are worried. And farming can be odd. My dad's already spent the equivalent of four years tuition at SU on fertilizer and we won't be receiving any money for another couple of months. And you don't know how the market's going to change in the meantime.

But they need to do something about the school buildings or else they're going to have to start setting up those collapsible tents on the playground and start holding classes out there.

Or else they're going to end up with 40 kids to a classroom with only one teacher and maybe a TA/IA/parapro. Which makes me cringe for so many reasons, for the teachers and the students.

Sweet

I am the nicest, coolest person ever.

If you are a boy between the ages of 8 and 13, that is.

I rock.

Friday was National Youth Service Day. AmeriCorps came out and painted a mural. The entire kindergarten in Royal came out (about 120 kids) and got to play games and add their handprints to the mural.

I got to spend the whole day outside talking to neat people and snapping photos that will hopefully be included in the paper.

I had to share these two. I mean, just look at how green that tree is! And the sky, so blue! It was a gorgeous day, especially considering it snowed/sleeted the day before. (Though only for a very short time.)

They did this mural in less than six hours. It was an amazing thing to watch.

annundriel: ([office] Reception)
I subbed at the library today and something happened that I didn't think much of until just now, watching NCIS with Abby and McGee talking about a person of interest using several names/aliases/characters.

There was a letter on the desk when I got to the library that basically said, "Do not issue a card to this woman. These are the names she goes by..." There were about four of them. She's from one town, but she borrows from several libraries in the system. She becomes agitated when confronted. And they included a grainy, black and white photo.

The photo actually makes me wonder if the main library she frequents has some sort of crazy security camera thing on/in the desk. Which would be kind of cool. Though it begs the question, "Why would they need that?"

It's just a little odd, the whole thing. But I'm stuck on the woman with several aliases in order to mess with the library system.

Also, I totally saved a kid's life today!

Well, okay, not really. A boy, early teens, brought in this little boy, approximately two and a half, and said, "I found this little boy crossing the street down by the park. He said his mom was this way."

The little boy was sniffly and cold looking (it was still is horrible weather today) and sad and not wearing any shoes, though he was carrying them. He wouldn't say anything, but by then there were a bunch of people around him and I think he was freaked out. So I called the florist/grocery store and Mom got on the intercom.

Turned out the kid was one of Mom's boss-lady's grandkids. I thought he'd looked vaguely familiar. He'd been down at the park with his brothers/cousins and then wandered back toward the store. So everything was fine and I did not have to call the sheriff.

NCIS note: Ducky and Palmer! I love them. Also, McGee's hair. I want to ruffle it.

::cries::

Sometimes it feels like the newspaper is slowly chipping away at my soul. Or my will to...do anything. And this is only my third month!

It makes me go to tense city council meetings when I'd much rather curl up with a blanket and watch new NCIS. ::pout::

Subbed at the middle/high school library today. Some punk kid tried to pull a fast one on me. But I rule with an iron fist and put a stop to it.

She came in, was looking at the books on the hold "shelf" (right by the check-in/out computer) and while I was busy helping another kid, she wandered over to the shelves. Thirty seconds later she wandered back with the second Diary of a Wimpy Kid book and was ready to go.

I thought the book looked very familiar. Like, oh, wasn't that just with the other books on hold less than a foot away from me? Yes, yes it was. But I scanned it anyway and a prompt came up asking if I wanted to take it off of hold. I clicked no and explained the situation to the girl. She was all, "But books on hold are supposed to be over there," pointing at the shelf.

Instead of outright calling her on it (I'm not much for confrontation), I said that sometimes things get put in the wrong spot and, sorry, I can't check this out to you. So I wrote down the hold name and stuck it on the book and put the book back in its spot.

Straightening the books on hold before the end of the day, guess what I found? The original note with the hold request stuck to another book. I had thought about peeking in the trash that's right there, but she didn't even care enough to try that.

Hold request notes. Heh. They're sticky notes, people.

Anyway. The girl proceeded to check out one book, return it, and then check out something else in the ten minutes that followed. Weird.

And now city council. I expect DRAMA tonight. And will maybe even be a little disappointed if there isn't any, even if I don't want to write about it afterward.
annundriel: ([ds] Fraser)
I subbed in the fifth grade today.

I have the utmost respect for primary school teachers. Geeeez, kids.

I mean, I love 'em. And it was tons of fun, especially the science part of the day. But I think it'll take my throat a few days to heal.

And math! omg, people! I can still do fractions! And long division! Sort of.
