Prompt Me?

May. 5th, 2010 07:17 am
annundriel: ([sga] Computer Habits)
I'll be subbing high school math today. According to the teacher's notes, students will either be testing or doing a chapter review. In the interest of helping me stay sane and not bored, anyone want to give me drabble prompts?

Character or pairing, and a word or two prompt.

I'm most happy with Supernatural (Dean/Castiel) and NCIS (DiNozzo/McGee), though I wouldn't be adverse to Southland (Cooper/Sherman) or Generation Kill (Brad/Nate).

Though I should maybe add that I'm still a little nervous about writing those last two.

And I am up for other pairings, the ones listed are just the ones I'm happiest with writing.

(I'm also aware I still have prompts from other request posts. One day I will finish Castiel's first time with pie. Or Castiel's first time at the fair. Or bowling.)

So, help keep a girl entertained?
annundriel: ([spn] Perspective)
Rarr. This morning sucks and I am subbing middle school PE this afternoon (it was that or 7th grade science).

I might have fic later.

There are three episodes of season five left. I'm hiding from the rest of LJ until it's over. I don't want to know anything about the rest of the season, including how people are reacting to spoilers. Hiding from the internet in general seems the best way to do this.

ME: The kids are having a badminton tournament in PE.
MOM: Oh, badminton's one of your grandma's favorites you know.
ME: I know.
MOM: Me? I just like saying shuttlecock.
ME: Heh.
MOM: I am my daughter's mother.

- Follow-up to Before the Night Is Through sent to [livejournal.com profile] ginnith last night. I'm on a dirty, porny roll!

- Editor dropped off the Nikon D40. I get to carry a fancy-shmancy camera around with me! For free! HA. (Unless you count the various tolls anxiety takes on me when forced outside of my comfort zone in order to interview people.)

- The first issue of the new publication came out today. My feature is the first story in it! And they used my title! And it's all "Mary ___, contributing writer"! I feel ridiculous for being excited about it since I've been writing for the newspaper since November 2008, but there is something about opening this one up and seeing it there. Maybe it's because it's thicker than our inky-dinky paper? The publication is a combination of three local papers now, and is more tabloid-style.

- Subbing half a day of middle school PE tomorrow. I'd say I'm a crazy person, but honestly? I'd rather sub those classes than have to deal with a whole day of fifth grade where there are detailed lesson plans. (And half of the material's never where the teacher's note says it is...)

- There was a guy in the library today who smelled of diesel/gasoline. My nose is still tingly with it.

- I have Southland on DVD! Only seven episodes, sure, but now I can watch/re-watch and pause and whathaveyou whenever I want.

Holy Crap

OMG you guys, a girl very probably broke her nose during dodgeball today.

Which totally confused me, since the balls we were using were kind of like Nerf balls only maybe a little softer. I found out from the school secretary at the end of the day that one of the boys had bent to get a ball and she got hit with his head when he straightened back up.

The swelling had gone down by the time I saw her again in the office 6th period and it didn't look too bad. She was still in tears, but heading out to get it looked at.

Geeeeez.

Also, who knew there were like fifty bazillion ways to play dodgeball?
annundriel: ([spn] I Have the Power)
God save me from 8th grade girls. Geeeez.

I mean, not all of them. (I was an awesome 8th grade girl, for example.) But the ones in first period PE are just...frustrating. Actually, that whole class is kind of frustrating.

But during the actual activities of the entire day, the other teacher put the radio on over the gym speakers and they played Kris Allen, Adam Lambert, Lady Gaga, and Muse practically in a row. I was very happy.

And got to be the woman in charge of the scoreboard buzzer. POWER, I HAZ IT.

I am disappointed that some of the worst kids throughout the day were kids that regularly use the library. Where they generally don't cause problems. Peer pressure. Ugh.

Two kids in my class got sent to the principal for wearing gang shirts.

Anyhoo. Project Runway tonight! May it be less boring than last season!
annundriel: ([spn] I Have the Power)
It's probably wrong to feel gleeful when the other PE teacher tells you the kids will probably run the next day. But, oh, it's nice being on the other side of the equation for a change! Also, some of those kids...Grr. ::shakes fist::

You know you're in trouble when the other teacher tells you, "Fifth period you've got about, oh, five of the worst human beings on the planet."

It wasn't that they're disruptive or disrespectful, they've simply turned Doing Nothing into an art form.

Was Health today, but will be PE the rest of the week as there WERE NO LESSON PLANS. I was supposed to call the teacher, but she never got back to me.

I did get a good start on my port article. Yea, multitasking! I still have the fire district meeting to go to tonight.

Oh, that reminds me of something that annoys me work-wise. Especially in regards to subbing at the school. )

So I am mostly using this mood (originally "mischievous") because it is seriously one of my favorite Castiel moments/looks in SPN. I NEED AN ICON.

But now I'm going to go find a heater and/or blanket and curl up with Guards! Guards! until I have to leave again.

01. At the library, I helped a couple find sample questions for the test for US citizenship. Felt awesome after.

02. Agreed to sub three days of middle school PE in a row. OMG AM I A GLUTTON FOR PUNISHMENT??

Although the times I've done single days have been fine.

03. Southland premiered on TNT. REALLY enjoyed it. The permiere was commercial free and I was surprised that my attention never wandered. Pleasantly surprised. Very much looking forward to seeing more. I'm hoping I won't miss too many because of meetings (at least two a month, stupid city council). But I suppose that's what the internet is for after all.

On a shallow note, I appear to have a thing for Ben McKenzie's profile. ::shrug:: I think I always did. Something about his nose. (I never really watched The OC, but I enjoyed Junebug.) And, of course, Michael Cudlitz is just...hot in a very solid way. Mmmmmmmmmm. I like his profile, too.

And, omg, they're good. That scene outside the house? "You're a cop because you don't know how not to be one." Whoa.

God. I am REALLY EXCITED for this now. I mean, I was sure I would enjoy it, but I'm close to making grabby hands and pleading, "More now? Pleeeeease?"

04. NCIS )

05. [livejournal.com profile] ginnith did a fantastic thing and reminded me that with no Big Bang, I can have fun with the Porn Battle and not feel guilty. So I can go back to what I do the best the most: writing short, dirty fic.

06. PORN BATTLE. Coming up! I swear, porn battle time is my favorite time. I only wrote two for the last one, three for the one before. My first attempt (porn-wise and battle-wise), Any Other Name, is still one of my personal favorite of the things I have written.
annundriel: ([spn] Winchesters)
Turned into kind of thinking out loud beneath the cut. I'm tired. And have Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend" stuck in my head because I had to listen to it FIVE BAZILLION TIMES over the middle school gym sound system. (I don't hate the song with a burning passion, I just want it to leave me alone for a bit.)

Subbing at the school makes me feel like such a spazz.

I mean, kids generally like me but interacting with the other teachers? The ones that didn't teach me at some point? Kind of makes me feel like a spazz.

And the kids, too, to a point. I think it's the whole...trying to be authoritative when you have no clue what is going on.

Though I was helpful and clever at the port meeting. Or, well, at least helpful. I'm a librarian. My google-fu is strong.
annundriel: ([spn] There's a Place for Us)
I just want to say that I am floored, I am honest to God floored by the response There's Not a Step We Can Take has received. I have pretty much had a ridiculous grin since Thursday morning.

You have an idea for something and you write it down because that's what you do. And when you finish it's something you want to read and you enjoy so you share it and...turns out other people do, too.

I mean, it's not like it's my first time ever posting fic. I guess it still just amazes me that people enjoy my writing.

(I feel the same way about the newspaper.)

It's hard coming up with different ways to say thank you, but keep trying and I mean every one of them.

*

Middle school PE went well. Only three periods and I was in charge of the girls. The other PE teacher apologized before school started, saying, "I bet you thought it would be an easy day." Which, okay, yeah I did. And then he explained his idea, which may have been hard for other subs, but it sounded like cake to me.

The girls had just finished their volleyball unit, so they broke up into their teams and played volleyball. I sat there and watched. Pretty easy, I'd say.

Now maybe a nap.
annundriel: ([spn] I Have the Power)
I signed up to sub three and a half hours of middle school PE.

Clearly I am a crazy person. It's PE and it's the middle school.

But it's also only until 11:30 which means that I'll be done by lunch and they won't call me for a longer position. So those were pluses. The whole automated calling at five in the morning makes me stress out every night that doesn't precede a day marked "non-work."

The first time I subbed was PE in the elementary. I could have really used a whistle. Of course, anything out of high school and I could really use a whistle. Lots of trying to project without yelling.

I'm really enjoying FlashForward so far, the balance of drama and humor, and the mystery of the whole thing. (Hi, Jack Davenport! On my TV! With your accent!)

I'm not sure about Eastwick, but I'm giving it a shot for Paul Gross and his voice.

I really was an emergency sub at the high school today. Spanish I and II for grades 10 through 12. Because the sub that was supposed to be there, wasn't. Which is why I subbed that class last school year, too, strangely enough. Only this time, definitely because someone was flaky )

Elementary

I lead a life of excitement and varied employment.

The '09-'10 school year started at the end of August. Today was my first subbing day. Got the call at 7:15 this morning from the school secretary and not the automated system. Which pretty much means I'll say yes as long as I don't have something else to do. I have a bad habit of hanging up on the automated system. ::shame::

But it was an emergency, so I went in. Subbed for a position that's new this year. I traveled around the school, going to one class in each grade (K-5) for 45 minutes doing Weekly Reader and Time for Kids. TFK was about the California wildfires and WR was fire prevention. I also got to lug around a 45 lbs. backpack to demonstrate how heavy some of the equipment a firefighter carries is.

I was sort of dreading kindergarten and first grade, the last two classes of the day, because filling 45 minutes with kids that age can be difficult if you've only been given so much material to work with. And thrown in there. But they were my favorite classes of the day. Definitely the most well behaved and quiet. I was super impressed.

One of the IAs in the kindergarten helped teach me in first grade. The first grade teacher taught my brother (now 21) in kindergarten. Crazy!

But it really was a pretty good day, even if I am now losing my voice. I saw a bunch of my library kids (haha, my library kids) and even got a drive-by hug from one of them, which was awesome.

You know, I really do not want to teach (because, wow, that is a lot of work and some crazy politics) and when I thought I did it was never elementary, but I do love being at the elementary now as a sub. Kids can be little punks and brats and loud and annoying, but they can be really great, too.

The principal wanted to know if I could do this again this week since now I understand what the position needs/asks for and the woman I was subbing for may not be back due to her father being ill. Unfortunately, Wednesday and Thursday I'm subbing at the public library.

I still have city council tonight. I'm hoping I don't actually fall asleep.

Subbing 8th grade science.

Send help.

Or cookies.

Although, apparently they are working on rockets and "it should be fun."

The teacher was my freshman science teacher his first year at the school. Weird.
annundriel: (Default)
Got a call a little before 5:20 this morning asking if I could sub today. Ended up with a half-day with fourth graders.

I heard, "You're really tall" a lot. Yup, kids, I am. You're not the only ones to notice, either.

I also got several comments/questions about my Tiffany bean necklace.

Meanwhile, I was really happy with my hair today.

Picture! Because who doesn't want to see a Myspace-style self-portrait? )

I've got a haircut scheduled June 6 and other than shorten the back (because omg it's driving me crazy and I will never survive the heat), I'm not sure what I want to do. Keep the bangs? Grow them out? Get them trimmed? ::shrug:: I also want to dye my hair again, but I don't know if I want to go red or darker brown. Opinions?

Coconut italian sodas are the best summer drinks ever. Yum.

Mom and I are watching season four of Supernatural out of order. I may be on my way to developing an unhealthy interest in Castiel.

Busy Day

Subbed preschool/kindergarten today. Got the call around 7:20 this morning and got up, but didn't take the job. Then got a call from one of the secretaries and it was either that or 6th grade math. So. Kindergarten. Fun times. Yea for parapros!

Then saw Star Trek with Mom and Dad. The other people sitting next to me were annoying, but the movie was still awesome.
annundriel: ([ds] Fraser)
I have Merlin fic to post later. Trying something different. I find it amusing that my Merlin writing comfort zone is rated NC-17. How things change.

Anyway, just waiting to hear back on a last question there and then I think I can stop being crazy obsessive about every single word.

I feel really productive fic-wise lately. I think it's the newspaper. It's nice to have two word files open and switch between the meeting of the week and fic whenever I get stuck on one.

I also have more Supernatural to watch now. Yea!

Tomorrow I'll be playing the part of 6th and 8th grade PE teacher. It was either that or three days of high school math. And while the note for that said that it was just tests and worksheets and an easy three days for a sub, I'm still a bit...eh, no about it. Plus, I don't know what type of meeting city council will be tonight and how long it will take me to put it together in an article. So, PE. I've done elementary PE before (first school sub job ever!) and it's not something I can really screw up.

Also, this way I can get my dentist appointment in. I've been putting it off. Time to just get in there and get it done. (This makes me sound like I don't like my dentist. I love my dentist. He is made of awesome, basically, and I've been seeing him all my life. I'm just worried they'll find problems and look at me with their disappointed faces. Which should be fine with them, really, since disappointed means they'll be making more money.)

Meanwhile, I've got "On the Street Where You Live" stuck in my head. What up, brain?

ETA: I should not ever post anything while even remotely tired. ::edits::

Ah, Week

Apr. 30th, 2009 10:56 pm
annundriel: ([btvs] Hardly Working)
Monday I subbed in the middle/high school life skills/special education class. Love the fifth graders though I do, the experience was the most fun subbing I've had yet. It's a small class and the kids are great. Plus, I didn't end up with a hoarse voice and a wicked headache like I do when I'm in the elementary school.

The paraprofessionals are basically in charge when the teacher's not there, so that makes it easier on me. But I graduated with one of the parapros (and it's her mother's class), so she knew what I could handle.

I'd definitely like to go back if they'll have me.

Tomorrow I'm going in to talk to the school district's business manager about state budget cuts and what that means for the school. Washington is cutting levy equalization by about 15% and I-728 funds by about 68%. The meeting tomorrow is to make sure I've got the expected dollar amounts correct for the paper. If I do, the school district is losing...about $600,000 in funding next year.

I could talk about how frustrating and scary that is, but that would just make me sad and, well, frustrated.

So instead I will say that season one of Supernatural came from Netflix yesterday and I've now seen exactly one whole episode. Exciting! I vaguely remember planning to watch it initially, but then work and school and other TV got in the way. (Thursdays are unlucky sometimes. I lose my TV watching stamina.) And like I need things that negatively encourage my over-active imagination. But now I'm giving it a shot.

And it's fun watching Mom try to remember Padalecki.
annundriel: ([pv] Space Between)
Watching Ugly Betty. Betty just had orange juice and ate a pickle. Um. Eeeeew. Like...toothpaste and orange juice.

One of my favorite things about this show is the relationship between Betty and Daniel. I love that they talk. And that they both talk to Daniel's mom. They're all such a family.

I'm doing better than I was the other day when I made this post. At the time, I'd just gotten back from a 2.5 hour council meeting that was exceptionally dull and had several calls from the school about subbing the next day.

Basically, all three of my jobs converged on me this week and I had a moment of AAAHH on top of never quite finding emotional release after having a weird weekend. Still have not had a break-down, but I'm feeling mostly okay. Just a little drained. Fifth graders are crazy, but great. And the library was super busy for the last hour and a half. But I've set tomorrow aside for article writing, so that will be nice.
