Rarr. This morning sucks and I am subbing middle school PE this afternoon (it was that or 7th grade science).

I might have fic later.

There are three episodes of season five left. I'm hiding from the rest of LJ until it's over. I don't want to know anything about the rest of the season, including how people are reacting to spoilers. Hiding from the internet in general seems the best way to do this.

Supernatural - "Hammer of the Gods"

I'm trying to have a more meaningful reaction to the episode, but I'm kind of failing. Gabriel's death was upsetting, but not surprising given the way the episode was heading (among other things). I think they lost the potential for something really great there, especially with Gabriel finally taking a stand.

But as an episode I enjoyed it.

- I think I could stick Richard Speight Jr. in my pocket. He was delightful last night. Though during the seduction scene all I could think was that he should at least take of his jacket.

- It was a Battlestar Galactica night on my TV. First James Callis on FlashForward, then Rekha Sharma in SPN. (The gods are actually Cylons, oh noes.)

- I loved Dean finding Gabriel in the back of the car and Gabriel's thing about making a copy of himself out of a can of diet orange slice. Hee. Also calling Lucifer a big bag of dicks. If I had someone I disliked, I would totally call them that but--oh. Wait. Thought of someone. Awesomesauce. (The break-in I mentioned last week? Yeah. The person we suspect.)

- Gabriel and Lucifer also got some really great non-funny lines in general. Like Lucifer's line when he sliced his hand through Baldur like a warm knife through butter. I can't remember the line itself now, but it was a good one. And Gabriel's about "no one makes us do anything." Oh, Gabriel.

I really was hoping he'd take what Dean said in "Changing Channels" to heart. I'm just sorry it had to go the way it did.

- Sam's face was killing me when Dean decided to be all "Yeah, you're all a bunch of douchecanoe dicks, let's work together."

- Lesson learned: Brother or no, you'd better be prepared to kill Lucifer because he will kill you no matter what.

- I find Lucifer's sores somewhat distracting.

- I liked that the hotel was the Elysian Fields. I had a moment of giant geekery.

- I'd say I've been waiting forever for other gods to get all "What the hell? Apocalypse?" but I've only been watching since last season. Sentiment stands though; I've been waiting. And on the one hand, yea. Even though I'm not entirely sure how it all makes sense/fits together, but that's no different than dealing with multiple belief systems outside of TV. One the other hand, I dunno. They couldn't have tried to work together more? With the Winchesters and with Gabriel, that is. Apparently age does not equal wisdom.

The violence wasn't surprising. Everyone reacts to everything with violence.

- Are those archangel swords a dime a dozen now? Can you get a good deal on them at Wal-Mart? I thought they were supposed to be, y'know, rare.

- Matt Frewer! As Pestilence! What a nice surprise! I've liked him since Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Also, totally gross. I did serious honest-to-god get-away flaily hands when he sneezed in that guys face. Blood and gore, whatever. Slimy, sticky snot? Someone get me an industrial-sized bottle of hand sanitizer.

- Oh, look! A plan that might actually work. If they can get the other two rings (Death's is the one that worries me) and lure Lucifer back in.

- That reminds me, I liked that this episode began like a Monster of the Week ep and then turned into something that fit right in with the overall season arch. As opposed to "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid," which I felt was kind of, I dunno, shoe-horned in a bit. The connection to the rest of the season felt a little "Oh, by the way..."

I like that your reaction is so much more... sane than mine.

Oh, my reaction entry... SO angry. Tsk tsk.

:)

Once I regained rational thought, I reacted pretty much like you.

Oh, I saw that. :( It is upsetting. And we'll see how capable of rational thought I am should something happen to Castiel.

Though I imagine I'll be less angry and more depressed.

I do hate that it feels like we're just getting to really know some of these characters better, only to have them taken away.

Yeah, this is my overwhelming reaction to Gabriel's death.. it could have been awesome. *sigh*

Well, I thought the death worked (and I liked the fact that it was kind of...intimate), but there could have been more done with Gabriel himself. And maybe that's just my desire to know more about Gabriel in general.

I thought the death worked well too. I think we're on the same page re. Gabriel...I mean, as a character? He's kind of fascinating.. An angel that self-exiles to escape his family, goes into the business of being a trickster to fuck with people, being unable to help himself get involved with the two boys he *knows* he shouldn't if he wants to remain in "witness protection".. falling in love and essentially dying for a god.. an archangel with an inferiority complex....

... I mean, there's so much that could be tapped into there and explored!

What I want to know is what Gabriel was like before he self-exiled. Did he choose the trickster thing or was that chose for him? Was he always like that?

And then Sam and Dean are on his radar and he should stay away, but he can't help himself.

Oh, Gabriel.

I am still sad over Gabriel's death. I mean, he finally takes a stand only to become the guy who actually knows the truth behind how to lock up Lucifer for good? Kind of ridiculous, if he knew this since the beginning...or whenever, why didn't he do anything before?
Although this just makes his death sadder if you think this way, cuz he basically committed suicide.
And I really liked Gabriel...*cries*
As for the pagan God's, they were awesome! Mercury though...where's Jupiter?
Though the episode was better than the others you mentioned, I agree with you when you say it wasn't very well planned.
And yeah the swords thingie! Does that mean Cas was upgraded to archangel when he was killed?? I don't understand...
And another thing, maybe you can explain it to me cuz I really don't get it, if when an Angel is separated from the Host he/she/it loses it's power, like Cas, why hasn't Lucifer lost his? I mean, yeah I know he's an archangel and everything, but...it's been millions of years, where is he getting his juice from?
The soars? Distracting, I agree.
Pestilence, disgusting. Don't come near me yo, he spreads sliiimeee, eeeeeeeeewwwwwwww... And the flies, in the car....god that creeped me out, even more than the eyeball soup.
Final Thoughts:
Gabrieeeeeeeeel!!! Nyuuuuuuuuuuuu :(

Because he was hiding, or a coward, or wouldn't take the steps he knew needed to be taken because Lucifer is his brother. And because before, if he knew or suspected he'd end up dead, that would be a really big step. I think he needed Dean's verbal kick in the ass to finally man-up. (Angel-up?)

And yeah the swords thingie! Does that mean Cas was upgraded to archangel when he was killed?? I don't understand...

I don't know how it works, but remember Uriel had one of those angel swords and he wasn't an archangel. But around that time, it seemed that they were kind of a rare thing (like the demon killing knife).

And another thing, maybe you can explain it to me cuz I really don't get it, if when an Angel is separated from the Host he/she/it loses it's power, like Cas, why hasn't Lucifer lost his? All I can think is, maybe Lucifer isn't technically separated? I mean, Gabriel didn't lose any powers either. Though, yes, that could be an archangel thing...Also, demons also have their own set of powers, so I wonder if there's anything there...I don't know! It's a good question!

Oh dear,m I forgot to post about Pestilenc on my reaction, HE WAS SO GROSS I DON'T EVEN!!!!! I was seriously creeped, and I thought after Famine they couldn't get any worse. Just.... eeew.

Gabriel's death...... I'm both sad and pissed about it. Though when I think about it, he needed to stay long enough for the boys to make their getaway, but still..... HE SOULD'VE STAYED GOOD FOR A FEW MORE EPISODES DAMN IT!!!

Oh well, I'l comfort myself with the idea that death is never permanent in SPN. I can dream, right?

I geeked out over Elysean Fields too!!!!

Pestilence was so much worse than Famine! Famine was creepy, but Pestilence was creepy AND gross.

he needed to stay long enough for the boys to make their getaway

Oh, man, he should have just distracted Lucifer until Dean and Sam got away and then poofed himself away. I wonder if that would have worked? But then, they also thought they might have had an actual chance at offing Lucifer.

I feel like introducing the other gods was a good idea in theory and it COULD have been amazing but the execution was horrible. I mean really? Lucifer is badass but no way would he stood a chance against a Goddess of Death and Rebirth.

- Are those archangel swords a dime a dozen now? Can you get a good deal on them at Wal-Mart? I thought they were supposed to be, y'know, rare.

Someone needs to have a word with there props. department because that is not a sword. That big blade Cas had when confronting Anna was a sword. That little silver dagger is a joke.

- Oh, look! A plan that might actually work. If they can get the other two rings (Death's is the one that worries me) and lure Lucifer back in.

This? Bothers me greatly. 19 eps. into the season and they finally have a plan. And Gabriel had to give it to them. I mean really?! Are these boys really that stupid or what?

Ugh!

Agreed. I don't really understand how angels, even archangels, are more powerful than gods, even old gods. And how does that even work? I dunno. Though I do kind of like the Neil Gaiman/American Gods route, where old gods are weaker because people believe in other things.

This? Bothers me greatly. 19 eps. into the season and they finally have a plan. And Gabriel had to give it to them. I mean really?! Are these boys really that stupid or what?

Okay, see, I am loving this season, but the one thing I HATE (or maybe just GREATLY DISLIKE) is the way that the apocalypse is supposed to be the big over-arching season story, right? But they kept doing stand-alone episodes and now it's like, okay, let's pick up the pace. I hope the last few episodes don't feel like, "do do do oh shit! we have to make this work now!"
