Let's procrastinate!

Pick one of my fics, and I'll give you three details that didn't make it into the fic. Background canon, deleted scenes, or a look into the future. My choice, but if you have a specific question you can ask it in your request.

Masterlist is here.

Come on, you know you want to.

Help keep a girl entertained? Snagged from everyone:

Ask me a fandom-related question in the comments. This can be fandom specific, general, or about fandom/lj stuff/fic writing/etc. in general. Questions can be as wacky as you want. Ask me about tv shows, characters, fanfic, fandom issues/meta, anything about any of my stories specifically. Whatever you want.
annundriel: ([sga] Computer Habits)
That time of the year again.

Anything that was "finished" I'm counting in my overall word count.

Total number of completed stories: 114
Total word count: 94,767

And because I'm curious for comparison:
Completed stories in 2009: 42 (2008? 16)
Word count in 2009: 43,245

Um. Yeah. I'm going to boggle at that a little.

This year's fandoms included: Generation Kill, Inception, NCIS, Resident Evil, RPS, Sherlock BBC, Southland, Supernatural, Torchwood, and True Blood (it totally counts). All of it can be found under my writing:2010 tag or in my memories.

I totally fail at ever answering any of these with just one fic. Considering I have 114 to choose from, I think that's okay. ;)

I had a really difficult time answering some of these questions. Best story? I don't know! If anyone else has an opinion (on any of them), let me know what you think!

Writing

Nov. 15th, 2010 11:18 pm
annundriel: ([amelie] Notebook)
I love writing, and I love talking about writing. I thought this looked interesting.

Snagged from [livejournal.com profile] trobadora.

I think it would be fun to talk about stories, but the usual memes are like, "What happens next?" "Tell me about Character A?" What isn't so much talking about stories as it is writing more of a story. But you know how sometimes you read something and you're like, "I got ___ out of this story, I wonder if that right?" or "What on earth was ____ supposed to be?" and it's too awkward to ask the author? Now you could totally ask!

I've heard people say that writing is hard because you have to make decisions, but we never really talk about the decisions we make with stories or why we make them. We talk about plot bunnies, but not about how we actually turn them into a story.

And it seems like a lot more fun to do that than to do working.

So, if you wanted, ask me questions! Anon commenting is (always) on, if you feel shy. Or ask your flist to ask you questions.

What were you trying to do [here]? Why did you decide to ____? This is what I thought about xyz, is that what you were going for? What made you write ____? And so on.

Or, y'know, feel free to ask me what happens next on a fic, or why Character A did this instead of that, or anything fic or writing related at all. If you have a question, ask!

Because I have so many (at least 28) WIPs, I decided I'd just do a selection.

I'm in the Seattle area and loving the fact that it's the end of June and I'm cold.

Snagged this off my flist. I could use some prompts to help keep the creative juices flowing. (Uh. Even though I think I have a few non-meme ones I haven't filled...)

The first ten people to comment in this post get to request that I write a drabble of any pairing/character of their choosing. In return, they have to post this in their journal, regardless of their ability level. Some other equivalent gift, like icons or mini-fanmixes or quickie meta, would make sense for people who don't write fic themselves. (Or if the writing doesn't come...)

I don't care about the "in return" part. Obvious fandoms are obvious: NCIS and Supernatural (including Jensen/Misha). I wouldn't mind Southland, either. Or Due South, though I haven't done that for a while. I'm pretty open to whatever. :D

Though if you don't write, I imagine you can do something else creative. Or just ignore that part. I won't mind. ;)

Fandoms I'm up for (but am not limiting anyone to): NCIS, Southland, Supernatural. I might as well throw Merlin in there, too, though I haven't done that for a little while.

This was a lot of fun, and I am posting it before I obsess about it MORE.

I wish I was artistic!

1. Comment to this post with "I surrender!" and I'll assign you the basis of some TV show idea. (Science fiction show, medical drama, criminal procedure, etc...)
2. Create a cast of characters, including the actors who'd play them.
3. Add in any actor photos, character bios and show synopsis that you want.
4. Post to your own journal.

[livejournal.com profile] mclachlan's prompt: The world is populated by both humans ("3-dees") and live cartoons ("2-dees"). 3-dees are horribly prejudiced against 2-dees and have committed heinous crimes against them (robbery, vandalism, rape, and murder (erasure)).

A high school 2-dee discovers that 2-dees used to be revered in "animated films" (now extinct and buried) and embarks on a cross-country journey to find the birthplace of her kind: Warner Brothers Studio.

Drawn to Life
Theme: Smile, Darn Ya, Smile (updated)

High school senior Cate Coney hates her life. Besides being one of the only anthropomorph 2-dees at Maroon High, she's recently been paired up with 3-dee Maureen "Mo" Benson, a girl who's tormented her since kindergarten, to work on a genealogy project.

What they find changes both their lives, and soon they find themselves on a journey cross-country, looking for answers to questions they didn't even know to ask.

Press release snippet: Babs Bunny, best known for her comedic work on Tiny Toon Adventures, takes on her first serious role as Cate Coney in the new series Drawn to Life airing this fall on Not-Fox.

I got tagged by [livejournal.com profile] marynyu

I tried to come up with really random things I haven't used on variations of this one before.

- List 7 habits/quirks/facts.
- Tag 7 people to do the same.
- Don't tag the person who tagged you or say that you tag 'whoever wants to do it'.

01. When I play any Legend of Zelda game with Tris, I do the leg- and brain-work and make him take care of the bosses. Because I AM A WUSS OVER-EXCITABLE. We had a lot of fun with Twilight Princess (which we never finished. sad.), and I wasted lots of valuable schoolwork time. Thirteen year olds are a bad influence.

02. Hermann Corrodi's Venice is one of my favorite paintings. I'm not even exactly sure why. Something about the color and light, the water, the sky. It's part of the founding collection at the Frye Art Museum in Seattle and I could stand in front of it for hours just...looking at it.

It's the first one on the top left here.

03. My writing notebooks are color-coded. An idea comes to me and it just...feels like a certain color, so that's the color I use. Then if I continue it, I'll continue using that color for the ease in finding all the related parts scattered through the notebook.

DiNozzo and McGee often end up in blue ink. Maybe it's a suit thing?

04. I hate not knowing words when I'm reading. If I come across one, I have to mark it, write it down, or look it up because otherwise my brain'll get stuck and I won't be able to move on. The dictionary app on my iPhone has saved hundreds of sticky notes from ending up in a pile with page numbers and words written on them.

05. I like things (books, movies, episodes, etc.) that make me sad. I think it's a cathartic thing.

For example, I love the Pacific Northwest Ballet Company's Swan Lake I've seen it twice. It's beautiful and heartbreaking and the ending kills me. I don't think I'd love it nearly as much if they didn't go for the heartbreak. (They talk about it here, with a clip of the final scene.)

06. I have weird issues with frogs. Live frogs freak me out. If you want to know the thing that freaks me out the most EVER, do a search for "surinam toad." ::shudder:: When the females lay eggs, they get embedded on her back and then skin grows over them, forming pockets in a honey-comb like pattern. The eggs hatch and the tadpoles grow up in those pockets and emerge from her back as fully-formed toads.

On the one hand, kinda cool. On the other hand, FREAKS THE HELL OUT OF ME. THEY ARE CREEPY.

Oh, god. Just thinking about it...

07. I have never been able to get past chapter eight in Sense & Sensibility. I've read every single other thing Jane Austen has written, but I cannot get through S&S.

I don't really like tagging people (though I don't mind being tagged; memes keep me entertained), even though I know there's the option to ignore. But I'll do it anyway: [livejournal.com profile] ember_firedrake, [livejournal.com profile] ginnith, [livejournal.com profile] jack_infinitude, [livejournal.com profile] mclachlan, [livejournal.com profile] olivelavonne, [livejournal.com profile] sdrohc_ratiug, [livejournal.com profile] spacefragments.

Ideal Fic

Jan. 11th, 2010 03:21 pm
annundriel: ([spn] There's a Place for Us)
Okay, so I figure I should just say this now: at the moment, I am NOT planning on signing up for this year's SPN Big Bang. Those of you who know me in real life know how badly obsessive and indecisive I can be and just thinking about it was giving me hints of panic. So. I think I will be generally a happier person if I can just write my fic without the weight of deadlines or word counts.

[livejournal.com profile] ginnith tells me that I'm writing my planned fic either way and to expect nudging. Which isn't too bad, since it was always the plan to write the fic. This way, though, if it ends up at 8000 words I won't be a failure. :P

I don't want to be a disappointment, guys! I really don't. But I don't feel comfortable enough to throw myself in there yet.

Anyway, here's a writing meme snagged off [livejournal.com profile] shetiger:

If you could have me write a fic specifically for you, what would it be like? Fandom, characters/pairing, genre, plot elements, kinks (if applicable)...what's your ideal fic from me?
annundriel: ([sga] Computer Habits)
Sorry for the post spam, but I had to get that fic posted before I could do the end of the year fic meme.

Fic, ficlets, and drabbles included, I wrote and posted 42 (life, the universe, and EVERYTHING clearly) fics in 4 fandoms this year: 21 SPN, 13 NCIS, 5 Merlin, and 3 Due South. (I'm counting "Not Dudley Do-Right" as NCIS since it's Tony's POV.)

And 60 newspaper articles.

Last year I wrote 16 fics. To go from 16 to 42 is just...crazy. I don't know. [livejournal.com profile] sdrohc_ratiug says it's due to the goal I made at the beginning of last year: write a little every day. You do that and you're bound to end up with something finished.

Perhaps most amazingly, I managed to complete something over 5000 words. I have never done that before! Outside of classes or school projects. (I really should get a wordcount on my play...)

This year has been very strange for me, writing-wise. Strange in a good way. I don't know quite how to describe how I feel about it without sounding a bit looney toons. But I love where I am right now, creatively. (Except for that fic that just refuses to work. Bleh.)

Anyway. Fic round-up, organized by fandom )

*

Writing Meme 2009 )

Also, I think it's fun to note that at least one Supernatural fic began life as Without a Trace fic (Time to Spare) while another was meant for Due South (Busted). I'm not really writing those now though, but each one either had a particular scene I still wanted to use (WaT) or an almost complete fic (DS). I was very happy to be able to use both.

Q & A

Apr. 28th, 2009 07:54 pm
annundriel: ([jd] Jack Hands)
If anyone's interested, comment and I'll ask you 5 questions.

[livejournal.com profile] regenvogel asked me these:

01. When did you start writing and with what?
I think I've always been writing. Or at least I've always been making up stories. I remember being in elementary school and making stories when I finished with my assignments in computer lab. In fourth grade (so when I was about 8) I won first place in my age group for a Veterans of Foreign Wars essay contest. My teacher put me up to entering.

The first really big thing I finished (that wasn't an assignment to write something creative) was my short, one-act play Tempests & Tea Leaves. It was my senior project in high school (everyone had to do one and everyone had to then do a presentation to graduate. My presentation was longer than the play at over an hour. I didn't know I could talk that long about anything!) The drama teacher trusted and believed in me enough to let me write the spring performance and then co-direct it. It was amazing. Occasionally I worry that I'm never going to get that again.

02. Are you a spring-, summer-, autumn-, or winter-person?
Autumn, definitely. Then spring. I prefer the transitional seasons.

03. Do you believe in astrology?
This is a great question because I don't really know. On the one hand, not really. But on the other hand...described and attributed personality traits are bizarrely similar. And sometimes my horoscope is weirdly close.

So I guess my answer is...I don't know. I don't put much stock in it, but I find it interesting all the same.

04. What's your living-situation?
I live at home on a farm with my parents. It used to be just the three of us, but my younger brother has recently moved back. He was living in another house on our property, but then our cousin started living there again and my brother couldn't deal with it. There were four years there where I was living in Seattle going to school for the majority of the year.

I like living at home because it's close to all my various jobs and it's free. (Because my parents are awesome.) And, really, my parents are awesome. We all get along really well. Mom and I do a lot together. And when I'm not working, I keep the place in order, which keeps her from going crazy.

05. What author inspired you?
I'm sure most authors that I read inspire me in some way. (Took a whole class on intertextuality.) But Jane Austen is a big one for me. Oh, and Agatha Christie. (Tempests & Tea Leaves was heavily influenced by my love of mysteries, particularly Agatha Christie. Also the movie Clue.) Also Anne Perry, mystery-wise. And then there's John Donne.
