I was completely prepared to dislike the pilot of Fringe last night based solely on the fact that JJ Abrams is behind it. It's not that I dislike JJ Abrams, I just think he's a little overrated. And that's based on the fact that I stopped watching Lost after season one.

Anyway. Fringe. I liked it. Definitely more than I thought I would. Even after watching three hours of TV beforehand, it wasn't a chore to sit through the hour and a half pilot.

The beginning was intense. They really went for the fear/disgusting factor, didn't they? The co-pilot? With the jaw? There's an image that you don't get out of your head quickly.

I loved the shot of the plane flying silently through the electrical storm. There was something haunting about that image for me, but juxtapositions like that - chaos/calm, noise/silence - really work for me.

I liked Joshua Jackson and John Noble a lot. I was surprised. Liked the woman playing Olivia, but less so. She's got that typical bland professional thing going on. But I think she's got potential. Felt bad when it turned out her boyfriend (John?) was the bad guy.

The dialogue was a little uneven. Some of it was great, but some of it was also kind of clunky exposition-wise. Like saying, "Hi, I'd like you to meet my friend Jack. He's an ex-Marine who likes guns and kittens. A complicated man." Um. Not that anyone said anything like that, but you get the picture. It's like that scene in Bridget Jones with the introductions at the party.

Though now if there is an ex-Marine named Jack I will be expecting him to like kittens.

I'd like to say more about plot, but I'm back to selling peaches today. Which means I have to be there in half an hour.
