Random Geekery
Jul. 22nd, 2006 02:32 amWhy can't I sleep like normal people?
Re-watched random bits of BSG, but since I'm still awake, I'm posting a couple of little things I've semi-randomly run across.
Although known previously, it's always fun to hear that Ben Browder loves FireflY as much as the rest of us. According to this, when he found himself on a flight with Nathan Fillion he cornered him and they "swapped war stories about Firefly and Farscape." That's something I'd love to be able to see/hear.
There's also some stuff with Claudia Black about Farscape and Aeryn here. She very briefly mentions talk about whether there could/would be more Farscape. Like Firefly, I have to say I'm pretty much okay with there not being anymore. I feel things were concluded nicely with both shows. However, that's not to say that I wouldn't be excited if more were to happen. I'd be cautious, but I'd be happy to see characters again.

Mal vs. Starbuck
Apr. 17th, 2006 11:49 pmKatee Sackhoff Talks Galactica Plans
The first question we had to ask was who would win in a fight, Starbuck or Malcolm Reynolds? "Who is Malcolm Reynolds?" (This brings on huge laughs, as she looks over at Nathan Fillion sitting nearby.) "You like that? Aw, I'm just kidding. Probably me. Yeah, maybe? Starbuck? He's bigger than I am."
Fillion chimes in, "Malcolm would sit on you." (This gets even more laughs.)
Hee! I'd watch that.
I will see this movie just for the two them.

Oi, My Brain
Mar. 8th, 2006 11:15 amMy head is killing me. I think I might be coming down with something. :(
It occurs to me that Major Lorne on SGA seems to be becoming something of a fandom equivalent of the little black dress. I think I've read fic featuring him paired with just about everyone on the show. (Except for Carson. That would be weird. I feel a little weird about reading Beckett in a pairing, which is odd considering how I started watching the show. Oh, although I don't mind stuff about him and Cadman.) And Lorne works with everyone he's been paired with. It's very confusing for someone like me who does tend to loyalty in pairings.
Anyway. I need a Lorne icon. A Heightmeyer one would be nice, too. And just about anybody from Battlestar Galactica.
Speaking of, I think I'll go watch some of that now. I'd like to finish it before the quarter's over so I can return Kasey's DVDs.
Oh, I do have a question about Firefly/Serenity - People keep asking me, as if I would know ;), if they're going to be doing more movies/continuing the series. Does anyone know if they are for a fact? I thought I had read that Joss said he was done with it and am now very confused when people bring it up. I, personally, think that what we have is enough. I mean, more would be fine, but at the same time, why mess with a good thing?

Just a couple of interesting things I've read this morning:
There's No GSA At Hogwarts. I disagree with some of the more general, gendered statements, but the article's very slash positive and an interesting read.
A negative look at Serenity by the person who used to recap/review Firefly on TWoP. We all know how much I love the show and the movie and everyone involved, so let's just say that I'm posting this because it was interesting to read another view of it. Some of it I agree with, like the fact that Joss is not necessarily brilliant when it comes to plots (though I think he has his moments). His real strength is in characters, IMO.
And, actually, I've often wondered whether the show would generate the same amount of love and fondness had it been around longer. As it is, I personally feel all the eps were generally pretty good. (We're not really counting "The Train Job.") So it's a fairly solid set of fourteen episodes. When it comes down to it, I'm pretty much fine with that. Because I didn't have time to get frustrated with it and they had no time to develop anything I could get really frustrated with. Besides the usual "what is Book's/Inara's story?" and "what the hell does the Alliance want with River?"
There's a part of me that suspects that River's story and the Alliance and Reaver story would have been different had they been allowed to develop on a television series. There's sort of this separation in my mind where I think "show" and "movie" and they are the same, but they're also different. Sort of like my feelings on book adaptations. One's a book, one's a movie.
Funnily enough, the part of the review that most got to me was the little dig at the actors over on SGA at the end. Aww, poor them. :)
Anyway. In news that made me squee in a way that was kind of embarrassing and really hilarious, Stephan Hawking is going to be at the Paramount Theatre in November to present his lecture "New Perspectives on the Origin of the Universe." I'm not that well versed in things of that nature, but *Stephan Hawking*. That's just really cool.

Black Market Beagles
Sep. 30th, 2005 10:05 amBecause this has happened twice now...
When you see this on your flist, quote Firefly.
MAL: Appears we got here just in the nick of time. What does that make us?
ZOE: Big damn heroes, sir.
MAL: Ain't we just.
BOOK: If you take sexual advantage of her, you're going to burn in a very special level of Hell. A level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theater.
( I got, um, a little carried away. :) Lots of good quotes. Which shouldn't be surprising 'cause it's Joss. )
*
I actually learned something in Astronomy this morning. If the sun became a black hole with the mass and the distance between the centers of the planets and the sun (now black hole) remained the same, the planets would freeze but their orbits would not change. They would not be sucked in.
So now I want to go watch all of those movies/shows with black holes in them that I've seen and see what they do with 'em. I remember things sucking. But then those are fiction and so they can fudge with the rules of the universe so whatever.

Random Catching Up
Aug. 21st, 2005 11:13 pmGOOD weekend in Seattle. Mom asked me if I miss it. I do a bit. But mostly I miss the people. ::hugs::
Only ended up watching Tristan. Callie went to Whidby Island with a friend. Tris got back around midnight on Friday dead tired. In the morning he woke up with Sheppard hair. omg so cute! He also went around saying "that sucks, yo." Ha.
Saturday we went to the mall and I got my bridal shower shopping done. Yea. The lady at Bath and Body Works was very nice and helpful in a way that was entirely non-annoying. She also had neat green-hazel eyes. And, omg, I found Good Neighbors/The Good Life on DVD!! The whole series. I am so friggin' thrilled. The show is *so* far before my time, but I caught it once on PBS and LOVE. Felicity Kendal is the cutest thing ever and Richard Briers cracks me up.
But why is it called something different in the US? Are we too stupid to understand the title The Good Life?
Saturday night I was flipping through channels and zoomed past Lifetime only to do a double-take and zoom back because I though I spotted someone I recognized. I was right! It was something called Silencing Mary and it starred Melissa Joan Hart, Corin Nemec (Jonas!) as her boyfriend, and Teryl Rothery (Dr. Frasier!) as a detective/cop. I stopped because of CN and had a cow, scaring Tris in the process, and then flailed a little more when TR showed up.
And then last night I couldn't sleep so I watched part of Nip/Tuck on FX and holy *crap* but that's a good show. I mean, damn. ( It was the episode with the stigmata-woman... )
I may need to buy it on DVD.
Also rented and watched Brigadoon because I'd never seen it before. Mom discovered I didn't even know what it was about when we drove over Stevens Pass and there was a sign for a town that seemed to not be there at all. Anyway. Loved it. How could I not? I mean Gene Kelly. We laughed our asses off at "hot headed Harry" trying to flee the village though. At one point he looked *exactly* like Mr. Peepers from SNL. 'Twas funny I tell you.
Friday's ep of Firefly was "Shindig." How did Inara know how much pressure it takes to cut skin? Was the fencing part of her, what I assume would be well-rounded, training at the academy? Of all the people on Serenity, I think it's Inara and Book I'm most curious about. And River. But Inara and Book are the ones we probably won't find out too much about.
( SG-1 - Beachhead )
Apologies beforehand with the SGA thoughts. I don't think I can get through it without excessive use of CAPS and exclamation points. As an English major and a scholar I realize I should be able to articulate my thoughts in a more learned manner, but, um, no.
( SGA - Trinity )
Hey, look, no excessive CAPS and exclamation points. Go me.
One question though. Who is Dr. Vogel and why does he love pastry so much? Speaking of, there was a lot of pastry in this ep. (Okay, not a *lot*.) Where did Rodney get that donut? Did the Daedalus go back to Earth and bring some with? Did the Ancients have a Krispy Kreme? I'm betting next week they find Starbucks on one of the unexplored piers/levels/wings.
Gonna go watch The Good Life now. Yea.

TV Theme of the Night: Drugs Are Bad!
Aug. 16th, 2005 11:10 pmWent with Mom to the dentist this morning. Read HBP in the waiting room. Approximately half-way through. Writing thoughts down as I go. Then went to Ephrata and bought Jason Mraz's "Waiting For My Rocket To Come." Got home and found invitation to bridal shower. Luckily Neesha was invited, too, and I'll have a date. Yea. Didn't want to go by my lonesome. Thought Crimes still has not come. Maybe tomorrow.
So there's all this fuss about the filming of The DaVinci Code. My thoughts? It's sold as a work *fiction*. Get over it.
I watched "Kinetic" today with Major Lorne. Majorly weird. Not nearly as fun as "Zero" with Jonas.
( Smallville's Kinetic )
Also watched SG-1's "Need." Funny that I just happen to watch two episodes where the theme seems to be "Drugs are bad, don't use them." Just need to add that whole Willow-Dark Magic-Addiction Buffy arc now. "Need" may not be the best episode, but I love the scene between Jack and Daniel near the end.
( Need )
Yeah, I'm fantastic at articulating things. ::eyeroll::
Besides reading HBP, I'm also working through Finding Serenity: Anti-heroes, Lost Shepherds and Space Hookers in Joss Whedon's Firefly, a collection of essays about various aspects of Firefly. It's pretty interesting. All of the essays are pretty good; a couple have been a bit over my head though. For example, "We're All Just Floating in Space" by Lyle Zynda was somewhat hard to follow because all of the existential philosophy. But it's good. Has helped me appreciate the show even more. And reminded me just how much I love Zoe and Wash and their relationship.
Thursday Mom and I head to Seattle to baby-sit the twins for the weekend. Yea! Should be fun.

Had a great time with Neesha yesterday. Watched the Inside Sci-fi Friday thing and giggled and ogled. Watched some more Firefly. Got online and looked at all the pictures we could find of the upcoming seasons of SG-1 and SGA. Added inappropriate Eddie Izzard quotes to the pics of Sheppard. Made, also inappropriate, fun of the Asgard. (Because we care!) And then the strangest thing happened...
I got a call from Amanda, whom I haven't talked to in approximately two years. And she's engaged! And to someone who's not the bastard she dated in and just out of high school. Thank *god*. The wedding is August 27 in the Tri-Cities. She's sending out invitations, so I'll get to go to one of the receptions. Can't go to the actual ceremony itself because they're Mormon and I'm not allowed in the temple. But wow! Engaged. It's crazy.
Now I have to go buy a wedding present. Gah!
I have Johnny Cash stuck in my head. Trying to drown him out with Elvis (of all people).

Jun. 29th, 2005 12:34 pmHad a crappy day yesterday, so I called Neesha and she came and rescued me. Yea!! Went to Starbucks and chatted about SG-1/SGA and books and writing and work. Went to the movies and saw Bewitched which was very cute (and I still have the theme music stuck in my head). Was impressed with Will Ferrell's ability to actually play serious at moments. Unfortunately, some really stupid teenage girls ended up sitting in front of us. omg, die please.
Then we went to dinner and talked about, um, stuff. And Neesha droze us back and told me about schizophrenia and that gave me a couple of ideas to play with writing-wise. And then we ogled Ben Browder and Michael Shanks and it was all good.
But in my most exciting news, and this will give you a clue as to just how boring my everyday life really is, I got Tom AND Nicholas hooked on Firefly. Go me! Happy panda. I have gone down to the living room twice to find them watching it without me. I'm very pleased. Last year we couldn't get Tom to sit down and give it a shot, and now he's finally watching it.
Yes, I am boring.
Leaving for Seattle today! Yea! Kay and Greg will leave tomorrow and then I am on my own. Saving fanfiction and things on disk so that I've got some fannish stuff to take my mind off of the creepiness of Haunted. It's a really bad idea for me to read that book at night while I'm alone in a house with it's own strange noises. Baaaad idea.

No Power in the 'verse Can Stop Me
May. 2nd, 2005 05:49 pmAm watching "War Stories." I love Firefly so much. Love it all of the time, but watching it makes me remember how much I really love it. :D
Was looking at the official Serenity website. Found a picture with Book in it. That makes me glad. Book's not my favorite character, but darn it, it's nice to see him again.
Also can't wait to see Adam Baldwin on SG-1. Apparently his character, Colonel(?) Dixon, is pretty insane with the weaponry. Or so I've heard. Somewhere. And, speaking of SG-1, new pictures are coming out for season nine's premier episode and there's one of Merlin. MERLIN. It's friggin' hilarious. I mean, *Merlin*. Which shouldn't be so surprising/funny/whatever considering Thor in season one. And of course Thor turned out to be Asgard which makes me wonder what Merlin will turn out to be. (Asgard again? Isn't that a little...redundant after awhile?) Oh, wait. Looking at Gateworld, it says that Merlin is an Ancient. Of course. ::eyeroll:: I'm still wondering about the Ancients. They've done/left behind some questionable things on Atlantis.
Meanwhile, Ben plays with a big sword and his fans wonder where the leather went.
Is it July yet?
And in real life, which is much less interesting than the stuff in my head, nothing's really going on. I am spectacularly lame and boring. Go me!

I've hooked Neesha on Farscape and Firefly! At least, I'm pretty sure I've hooked her on both. The first one for sure.
Go me!
Anyway. I've been home since Sunday night. Mom came over Saturday and Kay, Greg, Tris, my mom, and I all went and saw Spider-man 2 because Greg wanted to take Tris to something. He's such a good kid to take to movies. Not a peep out of him the whole time. And it's funny, but each time I see the movie they, I see almost completely different previews beforehand. Except for I, Robot. That's always there.
Speaking of which, I have something to say to nit-picky people. Exactly how many people are going to realize it's taken from an Asimov book? I'm willing to bet not too many. I mean, yes, people will know that it's based on it and whatever, but how much of the mainstream movie-going public even know who Isaac Asimov is? I do think it's interesting that at IMDB.com they have written "suggested by book" next to Asimov's name.
Although this also runs me into the corner with the hypocrites as concerning my feelings over the marketing of King Arthur. As I mini-ranted to Kasey, they have to market their story as "real" because they think it will draw a better crowd or generate more interest or who knows what, when what the movie really is is just a bunch of British guys with swords on horses and half-naked warrior women running around pre-Britain (I can't remember exactly what it was, and am too lazy to find it in my brain). They could have said, "Here is a fun movie that just happens to resemble some of the stuff some people might read in Arthurian legend classes. Or maybe even during free-time, lame-o's." (Do not take offense, I myself am a self-proclaimed nerd/lame-o.) But no, it has to be "real" and use old plot lines to get attention.
So, having not actually seen I, Robot or King Arthur yet, I would just like to say that generally they disclaim that these are based on something and do not claim to be exactly word-for-word what you get in actual text. It's a movie. It's mindless entertainment. Enjoy it.
Rant over, I can say that I'm seeing King Arthur *checks clock* today. Looking forward to it. Should be entertaining. Can't wait.
Today I finished reading Me Talk Pretty One Day. Loved it. David Sedaris is terrifically hilarious. Meanwhile, I'm still pushing my way through Dune.
Also, new Norrington/Jack Davenport icons because I finally had to give in. Someone please talk me out of completely changing my journal. Again. Because it would be cool to go all ships and pirates and Norrington and Sparrow and Aubrey and Maturin and Hornblower, but I really really shouldn't. Self-control, Mary! Self-control.
And, damn, but I would give anything to be able to write Sparrington.
Go me!

So the whole family saw The Chronicles of Riddick yesterday. Let's just say it didn't suck, okay? The first part of the movie I'm going "I have almost no idea what is really going on and people just beat stuff up, this is dumb." And then do you know what I realized? Who cares! After that I thoroughly enjoyed myself. And now thinking back on it, I understood it a lot more than I thought I did.
And, y'know, I find that I really like Vin Diesel in Pitch Black and this, so basically as Riddick, and in period work, but I can't stand him in modern stuff like xXx. Weird. He's also kinda got a funny face. Funny in a good way.
But, here's the OMG-Moment of Riddick: Karl Urban, aka Eomer, is in it! With a really crap hair-do. (Where's Jeff, the God of Hair-dos, when you need him, eh?) Part way through the movie I turned to my brother and asked why all evil people had to have crappy and/or funky hair. He just shrugged and ignored me. Doofus.
So, that's my question for anyone reading this. Why do villainns have bad hair? Or no hair (see Darth Vader)? Is it required? Is there a Hair Club for Villainns? I bet Sauron had terrible split ends. Possibly a comb-over.
I can just picture crazy "uncle" Sauron with his wacky Hawaiian shirts and bad comb-over. Really. And asking young kids (I'm picturing the Faramir and Boromir that Kasey came up with) to pull his finger. The one with the Ring. Ha.
Anyway. Also, some Firefly news. From Captain Tightpants even. It can be found here.

"Spring" Cleaning
Jun. 15th, 2004 12:32 pmWell, I feel as though I've accomplished something in my time at home. I've gone through my bookcases and at the moment I seem to be getting rid of about, say, 65 books. Looking at that number by itself, 65 may seem like a lot. It's not. There are still a ton of books in my room, and then you have to take into account all of the ones that I bought and/or brought back with me from college. I really really need a library. Or a small shed.
I finished reading Sophie Kinsella's Can You Keep A Secret? yesterday morning. Cute and fluffy. Would make a nice fluffy movie, too, a la Bridget Jones's Diary. I got Mom to stop at the Royal library and pick up Dune by Frank Herbert because I feel like I should read it. So far I'm enjoying it, despite the fact that I'm constantly referring to the glossary in the back of the book. And we learned that the library system here now has *gasp!* library cards. Shocking foray into modern book lending.
Mom, Dad, Grandma, Tom, and I went and saw Prisoner of Azkaban on Sunday. Lovely movie, still. I did have a minor freak-out near the beginning when I realized that the WHOLE WEASLEY FAMILY is supposed to be in the picture from Egypt. Which meant I was trying really really hard to figure out where Bill and Charlie were in the pic, since everyone fan-wise is waiting to see them at all. I was also struck again, particularly at the end when Lupin is hobbling out of his classroom, how very lonely his life must be. There is now an even stronger urge to read Lupin-fic that fills in his gaps. As well as a very strong urge to read Marauder Era war-fic. Because Hogwarts' lock-down was obviously indicative of some serious trouble previously.
Yes, I am a nerd.
There are new pics out for the Farscape mini-movie thing. And pics of the male Firefly cast from the first day of shooting the movie!!
Tom and I are going to go see The Chronicles of Riddick later today. Hopefully it won't be crap. Hey, at least it looks visually interesting. And Gwen from Angel is in it, so there.

Rygel said "ass-backwards"! Whee! (Puppets that aren't Crank Yankers swearing are always funny. Like when Angel turned into a puppet. "I'm gonna tear you a new puppet-hole, bitch!")
I really like Rygel and Chiana together. I like them apart, too, but the way their characters play off each other is terrific. You know, I actually love all of the primary characters I've met so far in the show. I thought I wouldn't, but it turns out I was wrong. Go figure.
And I'm a fool for John/Aeryn.
I apologize to everyone on my friends list that has to put up with my obsessive show love.
Between "shiney" from Firefly and "frell" from Farscape, my language is going to turn to fan-speak. But "frell" is so much fun to say! And so versatile.
Anyhoo.
I went downtown with Evie and Jana tonight and we had dinner at Mexico in Pacific Place. It was good. And great to get out again this week.

It's a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
Apr. 13th, 2004 04:53 pmFinally got around to looking at my Season Three Angel DVDs. Listened to commentary for "Billy" and "Waiting in the Wings". Best part though? The deleted scene from "WitW". Oh. My. Gosh. Funniest scene ever. Ever. Seriously. Alexis Denisof is so very good. I wonder what he'll do after Angel finishes?
I didn't go to Sociology or work yesterday. Felt too weird. Instead I "helped" Olive bake a cake for a girl on my floor. Since Lent is over she can eat animal products now. We hung out in the basement in the ghetto-like "kitchen" area. Fun times. I finished my math, Olive helped me with a couple problems, and then we finished Firefly. Because that is the best show ever. (Along with all of the other best shows ever. Cause, y'know, there's more than one.) For some reason, "Heart of Gold" got me a little teary. "Objects in Space" did, too, but that's more understandable. It's an amazing piece of television, IMO.
The few people who read this journal are going to get damn tired of me going on and on and on about Firefly every time I mention it. I'll try to refrain from now on. No promises though.
I only had Math this morning because Philosophy had a planned cancellation. I do, however, have to go downtown and observe gender roles at a children's clothing store. And then write a paper, one page single-spaced. I have never ever had a teacher ask for single-spaced before. And this is the second time! How can anyone read that many papers when the writing is that close together? Crazy teacher lady. Anyway, so when Olive gets out of class, anywhere between now and 5:40, we're going to grab dinner and she's going to go with me. Because I don't like walking downtown alone.
Thursday we're going to go downtown and see Hellboy. I'm really looking forward to it. We went two weeks ago to see The Prince and Me, which was fluffy and okay but not great, and it would be fun, money allowing, to go down there every other week. And walking is always good.
I should go outside. The sun is shining, there's a slight breeze, and no big icky bugs.

I'm seriously going to OD on Firefly if I'm not careful. (Can you say "intervention"?) I've been reading the old recaps at TWoP. Funny stuff. I wonder what would have been different if FOX had actually aired the pilot and the episodes in order? Hmm.
Philosophy was canceled today due to the professor being ill. Which means I get some more time to work on my Plato paper. Leaving me more time to procrastinate. Woo.
I skipped Math yesterday morning because Mom and Dad were in town for the kiddo's birthday. I just really didn't want to come back here Sunday night. So I stayed. Dad and I finished the Firefly episodes he hadn't seen and then Mom and I (Kay, too, but she was asleep really) watched Something's Gotta Give which was really good, but also kind of rambling. Like this sentence. At any rate, it was entertaining. And I missed The Donald on SNL. Sadness.
We don't have classes on Friday because it is Good Friday and this is a Jesuit institution. There are benefits to a Catholic education. (I'm not a complete jerk, there are other benefits, too...but no school is niiiiiice.)
I need another Starbucks card. *pout*
So yeah.

Quick Entry
Mar. 23rd, 2004 12:17 amI'm on my way home tomorrow. When I get there I have a few things to say about things I've seen this weekend.
Saturday Mom and I bought Firefly on DVD. Two words about that so far: Fox. Sucks. (So does the WB, by the way.)
Monday Mom and I saw Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I have a feeling I'll be talking about that a bit more. Either here or in my paper journal. Because? Best movie I've seen in a long time. And Alexander Pope is brilliant.
I plan on re-doing my journal while I'm at home. I need a change.
Off to bedfordshire with me.
