As for fall quarter...
Dec. 8th, 2005 01:53 pmI am DONE!
English paper ended up longer than I was planning due to my failure to double check the length. Philosophy paper ended up a solid eleven pages with a decent bibliography. Astronomy test kind of iffy, but overall I think it's fine. Mostly all I care about is the fact that I didn't completely blow anything and now I'm done for roughly three and a half weeks. Time to focus on reading for pleasure and not fortorture class.
Greg's picking me up later this afternoon and Mom's supposed to come tomorrow (weather holding) and take me back over the Cascades. I'm mostly packed now, just a few smaller things I need to grab, plus my laptop. Need to make sure everything of mine is unplugged and off the windowsill. I've already vacuumed (next quarter we are *so* vacuuming more often) and now I just need to do some dusting.
But right now I'm just gonna sit here with my Pepsi and Hot Tamales (with more kick!) and not do anything, at the same time I won't feel guilty about not doing anything because there is nothing left to do! Yea!!
*
I spent yesterday watching a lot of TV. Really shouldn't have, but I did. SciFi was doing their daily mini-marathon thing with Andromeda, so I watched that for a couple of hours and then used it as background noise. Before yesterday I'd only ever seen a handful of random parts of it, enough so I knew who everyone was. And obviously enough to be having dreams with Harper making faces at me in coffee shops (I still don't know where that came from). Anyway, I enjoyed the two episodes I actually watched, even if I didn't entirely understand what was going on, and it made good background noise for writing.
Also watched America's Next Top Model. Disappointed in the winner. Still don't care for Tyra Banks. I find her...annoying. And everywhere. Caught the beginning of season two of Project Runway. Hiedi Klum is so much better than Tyra. So much. Should be an interesting season. It's cool that Daniel Franco has actually made it past the first official elimination. Really liked Santino until Chloe won the second challenge. Then he went backstage saying, "They didn't want to give me first place twice in a row." That's not cool, dude. Then there was the bald guy with the scary crying. Wow, man, get a grip. If that's your reaction to a simple question your *first time*, how're you gonna react later? Oh! The weirdest thing happened just as Hiedi was kicking someone off. Bravo just...switched to infomercials with no warning. I had to go online to see who was booted. Very annoying.
Then, of course, ( Veronica Mars )
Also watched SGA's "Critical Mass." Don't have anything to say that everyone else everywhere hasn't already said. I liked it. Sure, it wasn't the best episode ever, but it was darn entertaining. And Sheppard and McKay are *SO* married. There's no denying it. (Meanwhile, I may have accidentally slipped into OTP territory with them.) Okay, so I didn't actually watch the *entire* episode, because I've been busy, but I watched the good stuff and ( it was nice to see )
*
Since Dad is going to be laid up at home for awhile, I think I'm going to make him watch the six hour Pride & Prejudice. Mwuahahahaha! He never should have told me how much he liked the new one. Which was actually pretty sweet. Near the end he asked me how much time was left because he had to use the bathroom and didn't want to miss anything. Aw. He missed a little bit of Darcy's "do you still hate my guts?" speech, but other than that, nothing. Definitely time to take advantage of the bed rest and bond over Jane Austen. :)

First off, Sour Skittles and cinnamon gum do not go well together. This I learned from first hand experience. Even if it's just the lingering taste of cinnamon, it is a BAD IDEA. Bleh!
I'm looking at the "Ten Trading Spaces Bedrooms" on MSN and Doug, Hildi, and Frank pretty much have me going WTF. I remember watching the ep with Hildi's Tiffany-box inspired bedroom. Crap! Crappity crap crap. Someone give Hildi some sedatives and lock her in a padded room. Vern's room doesn't disappoint, neither does Edward's or Laurie's. I know Edward and Hildi and Doug are still on the show, but what happened to Vern and Laurie? Show's not as much fun without Paige, so I just don't watch anymore. Not when I could watch While You Were Out with Andrew Dan-Jumbo and Leslie Segrete who is my hero on these shows because she can do *anything*. And then there's Debbie Travis on HGTV and she's pretty cool, too. Although sometimes her taste is a little iffy.
And how the hell did I get to talking about home improvement shows anyway? For someone who doesn't own a home, I watch way too many.
Anyway. The point of this post, sort of, has to do with Astronomy. And Stargate. Because classes are much more fun if I can connect them to the things I love. During lab today, my Astronomy professor's phone rang. The ringer is a cat meowing, she explained, because it drives her dog crazy. And also it's a nod to Schrodinger's cat in her bag. A joke I would not have gotten if I didn't watch SG-1. So, hey, knowledge. Limited, yes, but whatever.
And in class we talked about the satellites of the solar system, focusing on the satellites of Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune. I didn't know Callisto had a feature (a crater I think) on it called Asgard. Which, besides making my geeky heart leap, prompted me to look back into some Norse mythology. I am a happy, geeky girl today.
Also, I can't take the term "volcanism" entirely seriously. I *know* what it refers to and I understand it and can spell it and so on, but every time it's used, for a split second my first thought is "Spock?"

Looks like it's going to be a fairly busy weekend.
TO DO:
-One page opinion response to climate changes and environmental issues (Mon)
-Two page (at least) lab write-up for spectroscope lab (Mon)
-Respond to questions regarding Candide and Rasselas (Tues)
-Four page essay on Frances Burney and Mary Wollstonecraft (Thurs)
-One page essay topic proposal for Philosophy final paper (Thurs)
- ReadFoucault, Porter, and Rasselas (Foucault & Rasselas by Tues, Porter by whenever)
All I want to do is sleep and play the Sims. Maybe watch TV.
It has been raining most of the day (stopped right now) and it's really cold. I had to dig out my scarves the other day. Now I think I'm going to have to find my gloves.

Dorm Life & Midterms
Oct. 27th, 2005 10:50 pmToday was a pretty decent day. :) Got Astronomy test back (B) with midterm grades thus far (A-). Took Philosophy midterm (first one finished) and I think that went okay. The bad thing about taking a class from a professor you like and respect is that you want to do well and not have them think you're stupid. But sometimes you have off days. English was, for whatever reason, marginally less boring. The sudden synchronized underlining with Julia was pretty funny.
Yesterday I found out that apparently I'm "indispensable" at the library. Not sure how serious she was, but it's a nice thing to hear when I'm always worried that I won't be able to come in one too many times and they'll fire me or something. But apparently I'm the only one that comes in and actually gets things done. My boss knows that she can leave me a project and I'll get it done and done right. So that made me feel pretty good about things.
Speaking of libraries, had another dream last night in which I was working at the library. What's with this recurring library theme?
Bellarmine 7 has turned into the "special" floor. Tonight was the hallway Halloween decorating challenge for all of the floors. Prize is, so I hear, free pizza. So exciting. (So not serious.) *Someone* decided a fog machine would be cool and creepy. *Someone* forgot that fog is very much like smoke and indoors the smoke detector/fire alarm isn't going to recognize the difference. So the seventh floor was evacuated because we live with a bunch of idiots. ::facepalm::
Why me? Why us? This must be payback for something I did in high school.
Gonna go watch Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants now and hope nothing exciting happens for the rest of the night.

Another Week
Oct. 17th, 2005 04:19 pmAh, Monday. Alas, you will never be my favorite weekday. That's just the way it is. Unless suddenly Monday turns into the weekend, in which case Tuesday would be the new Monday and then I'd dislike it. Poor Tuesday.
This week I have to:
- Write a five-page paper for Philosophy
- Read most of Evelina
- Go to a lecture given by bell hooks
- Review/Study for Astronomy test
Fun college times. Looks like this week will involve nothing but staying on top of school work.
This past weekend, though, I totally gave to myself. Kay, Greg, and the kiddos went to the cabin and I house-sat and had a Veronica Mars-athon.
( So, Veronica Mars. )
Dinner now.

Degrees of Interest
Oct. 13th, 2005 10:18 pmToday was a good day. :)
Astronomy was *neat*. Watched a video on Einstein and General Relativity, theories of unification, quantum mechanics, and String Theory. Um. In all my English Lit focus and fear of mathematics and labs, I completely forgot how cool it all is. I love watching this stuff and hearing about it, but there is no way I could ever do more than take a class for dummies and geek out over the stuff that clicks in my brain. Unfortunately, just as they were about to really get into String Theory and explain it more thoroughly the professor stopped the video. And we're not going to continue because, really? You don't need to know that for Astronomy 101.
Philosophy was *canceled*. Woo. Good thing, 'cause I didn't really do the reading. I read parts of it and skimmed others, and skimming Philosophy texts is pretty much futile. You just can't get anything out of it. But at least it's not the ancient Greeks. Five page paper due next Friday. "You are required to identify an author's thesis and then frame an exegetical analysis of that thesis." Fun.
English was only an hour! Thank god. It's just boring. Maybe it will get better. We're supposed to be reading Frances Burney's Evelina for next week and I'm looking forward to that. It's something I've never read and always been kind of interested in picking up. Here's hoping the class gets even marginally more interesting.
Got a pumpkin spice latte at Starbucks. Seriously, Thanksgiving in a cup. So good.
Called Grandma to thank her for the gifts.
Watched SV tonight while getting some reading done. My god, for a moment I liked Lana and Clark together. Gasp! But then I got over it. There was something that I laughed hysterically at, I think, but I can't remember what it was. Some bad dialog I'm sure.
Whenever I feel bad about my own writing abilities, I will watch the WB and feel much better about myself. :)
OMG. Pete is on ER! Sam's Pete! David Deluise. I hope they don't kill him or his wife or his kid or whatever. He deserves better after being dumped. Oh, I guess his wife is crazy and hurts herself and they think she's going to hurt the baby, too. Postpartum depression. (They should get Tom Cruise on the show.) And now he and his wife are leaving and we'll never know if it's all okay. Oh, ER, you love to drive your viewers nuts, don't you?

Oct. 11th, 2005 12:36 pmAstronomy was fun today. We talked about black holes and singularities and event horizons and wormholes. Hee! I don't understand a lot of astrophysics/physics beyond the point of "Yes, I understand some of the words that are coming out of your mouth," but the stuff I do understand is just so cool.
This basically means that I would be happy listening to McKay talk about astrophysics at nine in the morning. Or anytime really. :)
I was also able to actually raise my hand in Philosophy today and provide a correct answer. Go me! Unfortunately I couldn't tell the professor where in the text I had found the answer because, well, I remembered discussing it in her Philosophy 220 class. But I still had it right!
And now I'm going to have to go to class and be thoroughly bored by Gulliver's Travels. I think I'll take one of my little notebooks and maybe write stuff instead of paying attention.

Elijah Wood and Jay Leno are funny.
Got most of the stuff done today that I wanted to get done. So that's good.
- Got through most of the review sheet for Astronomy. I like to say the words "sidereal" and "parallax." And typing "right ascension" and "retrograde motion" makes me feel vaguely intelligent.
- Read practically all of the introduction and first chapter of Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex. I think I had to read the intro last time I took Philosophy. There are, uh, lots of big words. This class is really making me realize all of the things I take for granted being a woman in the world of today. There are still issues, but it could be worse!
- Wrote a letter to Daniel Defoe. General response-thing to Moll Flanders. Oh, I wonder if I was supposed to have a thing written for tomorrow's readings? Meh. Maybe I'll work on that during Astronomy tomorrow. ;) It's just The Rape of the Lock and Essay on Man. And I like Pope, so it's all good.
How happy is the blameless vestal's lot!
The world forgetting, by the world forgot.
Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind!
Each pray'r accepted, and each wish resign'd
Tomorrow will involve Astronomy, Philosophy, lunch break, English. And then studying! Woo and hoo. I lead an exciting college life. You would hardly believe it. ::eyeroll::
One of our RAs came by tonight to take my picture because apparently we have a floor birthday calendar or something. Natasha thinks I should have told them no and that it was against my religion because I believe camera's steal your soul. Oh well. But you know what exciting thing I will be doing on the evening of my 21st birthday? I'll be working at the library! See? Life of excitement.
The thing that really sucks now? After going to the reading/signing last night I *really* want to read Anansi Boys. Or anything by Neil. Or anything for fun that's an actual bound book. When's Christmas break? I'm trying to save AB for then, as a treat for making it through the quarter. But I don't know if I can wait.
On Bravo's It's Great To Be... or whatever it's called I totally called the number one best thing about being gay. Cher. They did hint with sequins though, so I had help.
Anyhoo, I like this mood pic. Rodney makes me grin. Pointy finger!

Oct. 5th, 2005 03:36 pmSo I'm working on my review sheet for my Astronomy test on Friday, when I look in the index for something and what should pop out at me but "Lois Lane's Underwear, 158."
Hee.
ETA: Natasha and I just had a heated discussion (read: "uh-huh!" "nuh-uh!" "uh-huh!" "nuh-uh!") about whether or not Thor has crooked teeth.
He doesn't. I found photographic evidence.
My god, we're weird.

Hardly Working
Oct. 3rd, 2005 12:52 pmI have my first Astronomy lab in, oh, forty minutes. Should be pretty simple. I've already done the lab on my own, so now I'll go listen to whatever the professor has to say and do it in the computer lab. Wonder if I'll have to stay the whole three hours...
Spent Astronomy this morning writing fanfiction. :) I'm a bad girl. But we were talking about gravity and how that works and I already understand that, thank you. Or, rather, I already understand what she was explaining. For me it feels rather "d'uh!" but I guess I'm privileged in my previous education or something. So I wrote some fanfiction-y stuff and some of it was actually okay and maybe has potential to be something to play with for the rest of the quarter. Woo.
Have given up completing Moll Flanders. I am bogged down by books.
Took Tris to see Corpse Bride on Saturday. Perfectly lovely movie. Except for the kid who sat a seat away from me and brought his GameBoy. ::glare:: He only turned it on twice in the movie and, the first time at least, his mom jumped on him pretty fast. How rude. Other than that though, good movie. Go see it!
For some reason my MSN homepage is stuck on September 14. It won't change at all. Why?
I'm sure I had something amazing and interesting to say, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was now. Oh well.

Black Market Beagles
Sep. 30th, 2005 10:05 amBecause this has happened twice now...
When you see this on your flist, quote Firefly.
MAL: Appears we got here just in the nick of time. What does that make us?
ZOE: Big damn heroes, sir.
MAL: Ain't we just.
BOOK: If you take sexual advantage of her, you're going to burn in a very special level of Hell. A level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theater.
( I got, um, a little carried away. :) Lots of good quotes. Which shouldn't be surprising 'cause it's Joss. )
*
I actually learned something in Astronomy this morning. If the sun became a black hole with the mass and the distance between the centers of the planets and the sun (now black hole) remained the same, the planets would freeze but their orbits would not change. They would not be sucked in.
So now I want to go watch all of those movies/shows with black holes in them that I've seen and see what they do with 'em. I remember things sucking. But then those are fiction and so they can fudge with the rules of the universe so whatever.

So now I want to go watch all of those movies/shows with black holes in them that I've seen and see what they do with 'em. I remember things sucking. But then those are fiction and so they can fudge with the rules of the universe so whatever.
Classes! Woo!
Sep. 22nd, 2005 03:51 pmFirst day of classes over and done with!
Physics - Astronomy: The Solar System: Today this class made me happy in an entirely geeky way. I'm really looking forward to it, overall. Stars! Planets! The speed of light! Why Astronomy is being taught at nine in the morning, no one knows. If the weather cooperates, though, we may get to use the telescope some night and look at stuff. Hee! Anyway, the class will be a nice (relative term) change from all of the insane reading I have to do for Philosophy and English. Plus, the professor is from Wales, before moving around the States a bit, and she's got a bit of an accent so she's kind of fun to listen to.
Philosophy - Gender and Social Reality: I just re-looked this up on my program evaluation, and while it doesn't count for Ethics (as I thought it might), it does in fact count for my Interdisciplinary credit. Fascinating class. Today we discussed the need to determine sex (male/female) at birth and how a baby cannot leave the hospital if this is not determined. What happens then? And what if what is chosen for the baby is wrong? What makes it wrong? What really makes a male a boy? What really makes a female a girl? And why does the lack of one of these labels bother us so much?
It's gonna be interesting. Plus, the professor's still kind of strange and interesting. Good times.
English - Restoration & 18th Century Literature or Oppressive Stratifications: Race, Class, and Gender in Restoration and Eighteenth-Century Literature: The longer name makes me feel smarter. :) *Lots* of reading. Several things I've read before, though. Have had the professor before this though, and she's my adviser, so I know what to expect class/work-wise. Should be interesting.
Gonna be an interesting, reading-packed quarter.

Actually, I'm really looking forward to this coming quarter. Mostly just to get back to Seattle and school and civilization and people.
So I'm looking at my class schedule for this upcoming fall quarter and it now occurs to me that I only have five minutes to get from Bannon to the library. And, while they are right next to each other, what am I going to do if Astronomy runs over? I always feel bad about getting up and leaving, but I guess I may actually have to do it if that happens. Because I don't want Dr. Berry to get all...snippy at me. I like and respect her.
Guess I'll just be booking it with the elevator on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
On the other hand, no class for me on Wednesdays! How'd I arrange that?
( And speaking of Seattle and civilization, a couple of You Know You're From [city/state] When... )

Dyed my hair the other day. It's a bit darker than we expected it to be, but still very nice. Sort of a dark auburn-y red.
Neesha is coming over today and we're going to go out to lunch at her place of work. Finally. :) I almost wish I had a camera, because the Gorge is gorgeous. (hee.) And then we will come back here and watch Sci-fi Friday. Yea.
Maybe it's just my viewing of season seven of SG-1 at the same time as season nine, but I'm starting to miss old SG-1. I mean Jack, Daniel, Sam, and Teal'c and the dynamic they had. I don't necessarily miss Jack *now*, because I don't think he would fit in the same way that he did and it wouldn't feel right. But I miss the old team. Don't really know how to explain it. Oh well. Did get to see Major Lorne in "Enemy Mine." Obviously the stargate thing was old hat to him by the time he went to Atlantis. I love it that they carry people over and bring people back. Even really random ones.
::points:: How come some of my mood icons won't load?

May. 26th, 2005 01:40 pmSo, I'm all registered for fall quarter.
Physics 101 - Astronomy: The Solar System
Philosophy 367 - Gender and Social Reality
English 338 - Restoration/18th Century Literature
I don't get to take the other theology class I wanted, but I'll finally get my lab science out of the way, so that's a good thing. And Gender and Social Reality is with Dr. Berry. I really liked her in Phil 220. English is with Dr. Smith again, and my first elective class.
Should be an interesting quarter.
Right now I'm working on my "Researched Intertextuality Essay," trying to really find a specific topic/question that involves what I'm interested in and intertextuality. Doing this research on Shakespeare, King Lear, Nahum Tate, and Thomas Bowdler is really starting to make me want to bring up the phenomenom of fanfiction in this essay. Which is something I'm interested in and could put an interesting spin on my paper if I decided to try it. But I don't know if I should or not. Gar. They should not require research papers at the end of spring quarter. It's just not cool.
I also have to do all my Quia workbook and lab stuff for this last chapter of Spanish. Bleh. Tonight I have to go see Ran in Wyckoff. Should be good. At least that's one thing I'm looking forward to.
