My final quarter at Seattle University looks like this:

- English 352 - 19th Century European Novel w/Dr. Weber
Mondays & Wednesdays, 10:00 - 12:05

- English 415 - Donne and His Critics w/Dr. McDowell
Mondays & Wednesdays, 1:30 - 3:35

- English 328 - Chaucer w/Dr. Bullon-Fernandez
Tuesdays & Thursdays, 3:45 - 5:50

I'm really excited for all of them. I had Dr. Weber for English 110 and have been trying to get her ever since. And just now I've realized that I'm ending with her. Full circle, or something.

A week ago I was a bit wary about taking the Chaucer class, but I think I've become better at really participating in class to not fail completely at participation with Bullon-Fernandez.

I will admit to lingering nerves concerning the decision over the Donne class. I love John Donne, but McDowell is a big Donne fanatic (T-shirt to prove it) and that makes talking about it with him a little weird because what do I know as a student, y'know? But it's his thing and it's Donne and Katie will be there and I'm really looking forward to it regardless.

Meanwhile, OMG SERIOUSLY SHOOT ME IN THE FACE. The end of this quarter is RAPIDLY approaching and I'm so not prepared to have to write final papers. I may be freaking out a little internally at the moment.
annundriel: (Buy This Place & Watch It Fall (fs))
Next quarter for me looks like this:

- English 423 - Irish Literature w/Fr. Duffy
Mondays, Wednesdays, & Fridays, 11:55 - 1:20

- English 491 - Masculinity in the Middle Ages w/Dr. Koppelman
Tuesdays & Thursdays, 10:00 - 12:05

- English 431 - Asian American Literature w/Dr. Tung (YEA)
Tuesdays & Thursdays, 3:45 - 5:50

It's the schedule I wanted. When I'm complaining in February about it, feel free to point me to this post and say, "But Mary, you said you wanted it."

I'll then delete this post and ignore you, but whatever. ;)

It'll be interesting and a lot of work, though we're reading Native Speaker and Dogeaters in Asian American Lit and I've read both of those with Tung before, so that's a slightly smaller amount of work. Over Christmas break I may or may not attempt a start on the readings for the other classes.

Anyways. Exciting!

I think I'm going to declare a Philosophy minor.

All registered for fall quarter.

- English 487 - Senior Synthesis w/Father Cobb
Mondays & Wednesdays, 1:30 - 3:35

- Philosophy 315 - Buddhist Philosophy w/Prof. Wirth
Mondays & Wednesdays, 3:45 - 5:50

- English 358 - Modernism in Art & Literature w/Dr. Tung
Tuesdays & Thursdays, 10:00 - 12:05

And, for the third quarter in a row, I succeed in not having classes on Friday. Three day weekends are a good thing.

I was going to take Latin, but I got to thinking about how much more I'd get out of Philosophy and how I only need three classes in the field to have a minor. At first I thought it was two, since I took Gender & Social Reality, but that counted for Interdisciplinary and I don't think it can count as both. So better to get some Philosophy in next quarter. I wasn't going to until recently because I didn't notice the Buddhist class. All of it was Greek and focused on Aristotle and Plato and absolutely not my cup of tea. But after taking Asian religions, this one should be interesting.

(Also, Latin would have screwed up my three day weekends.)

But I'm seriously happy to have made it into Cobb's and Tung's classes. Yea.

Yesterday, Natasha and I went to McCaw Hall downtown to see Cosi Fan Tutte. I had to go for my Mythology class and Natasha came because I invited her. I really enjoyed it. Compaired to the other two operas I've seen, it was much better. Going in, I knew that at least the music would be enjoyable because, well, Mozart.

I laughed out loud several times, but in the end I found the whole thing rather sad. Was actually surprised by a couple of the more serious arias because I wasn't expecting them after the general silliness of a lot of it. They chose to have a more modern, unconventional interpretation of the ending (which has always been unclear), and I liked the end. After the events of the opera, I think from a modern standpoint it would have been completely unbelievable for the characters to have gotten married to any of the others. People were hurt. Especially Fiordiligi, I felt. And Ferrando.

Anyway. It was a good opera experience.

Next quarter I will be taking:

- English 391 - Ethnic American Literature w/Dr. Tung
Tuesdays & Thursdays, 10:00 - 12:05

- Theology 334 - Asian Religions w/Dr. Suh
Tuesdays & Thursdays, 1:30 - 3:35

- English 393 - Art of the Film w/Dr. Taylor
Tuesdays & Thursdays, 6:00 - 8:05

This means that on Tuesdays I'll have to change my work schedule a bit. Not a big deal. Kasey and Michele are both taking Art of the Film, so that's exciting. Yea!

Got a lot of cleaning-type stuff accomplished this evening. My old computer is finally tucked away and my new one is happily situated on my desk. And now I'm going through some of my old, unlabeled, random CDs and found some songs I completely forgot about. This song is kind of lame I suppose, but, gosh, I love it. Possibly I have a soft spot for it because of Choir. I think it's originally from Jekyll & Hyde.

"This is the moment / my final test / Destiny beckoned / I never reckoned / second best [...] This is the moment / so damn all the odds / This day or never / I'll sit forever / with the gods"

The Good

Had a fantastic time registering. Only took me two minutes. For winter quarter I will be taking

- English 332 - Texts in Context w/Dr. Bean
- English 317 - Mythology w/Dr. Cumberland
- Philosophy 345 - Ethics w/Prof. Arvidson.

And all of them are on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Which means not only do I get Fridays off, I hit the jackpot of Mondays off, too! :D

Walked downtown today and bought SGA season one for me and The Best of the Original Avengers for my dad. He'll be so happy on his birthday! And it will be something nice for him to watch as he recovers in December.

EB called about HP. Looks like Natasha and I are going to go with EB and her roommate to see GoF Friday night. YEA. Pride & Prejudice tomorrow night.

The Bad

For the most part, I like my job. It's not hard, it pays, it gives me something other to do than procrastinate or homework. But sometimes I really wonder about people there. No one I work directly with, but people like my boss. Because registration is this week, lots of library patrons have been coming in to pay fines so that the restrictions will be lifted off of their files. I've collected fines before, no big deal. But yesterday I collected a fine on a book replacement and didn't follow the correct procedure. And do you know why I didn't follow procedure?

Because in the three years that I've worked there, no one has ever informed me that there was a procedure. Or that I should watch for this kind of thing.

When someone turns in something late, they're charged a fine. (Duh.) If it's more than a day before they pay it, a datatel hold is placed on it. Once this has happened, when they pay the fine you fill out a datatel slip and put it in a special box. (You put the money with it if it was for a replacement book.)

THREE YEARS and no one thought to show me how to do this or tell me that I needed to. They all just assumed I knew. So today I wasn't in trouble, but my boss wanted to make sure I knew about it and didn't make the same mistake again. Implying to the very nice woman that I work with that I knew how to do this previously.

Which, obviously, is the thing that really bugs me. There have been several times in the past where I've been expected to know how to do something because they expect that someone has shown me how to do them because it's a very basic thing. But no one ever showed me. The boss can be very scary, but for all of her scary controlling, some things in that department are greatly overlooked.

I really feel for the new work-study students.

There's other stuff, but not stuff I feel comfortable posting anywhere ever.

The Ugly?

Sir-Mix-A-Lot & the Shawshank Redemption.

I keep meaning to mention this. Or not. But things keep reminding me off it so I'm going to mention it anyway. Sometime last week, Tyra Banks donned a fat-suit to see how men treated overweight women. She claimed people were really horrible to her. But the clips of the dates I saw? Well, all of the men were polite to her. Maybe a little distant, but polite all the same. And the distance may have been because she kept verbally attacking them. "How did you feel when I came in and was a big girl?", "Do you like big girls?", "What was your first thought?", etc. Did she ever think that maybe her constant questions were contributing to their reactions to her size/her in general? I find Tyra generally annoying anyway, and the only reason I saw this was Best Week Ever and The Soup. (Who needs real news?) So then she went back on her show and cried and I rolled my eyes and channel-surfed. Maybe I'm naive. Maybe I'm optimistic. I don't know. But I think anyway would have been distant to someone no matter weight if they acted like that.

So, I'm all registered for fall quarter.

Physics 101 - Astronomy: The Solar System
Philosophy 367 - Gender and Social Reality
English 338 - Restoration/18th Century Literature

I don't get to take the other theology class I wanted, but I'll finally get my lab science out of the way, so that's a good thing. And Gender and Social Reality is with Dr. Berry. I really liked her in Phil 220. English is with Dr. Smith again, and my first elective class.

Should be an interesting quarter.

Right now I'm working on my "Researched Intertextuality Essay," trying to really find a specific topic/question that involves what I'm interested in and intertextuality. Doing this research on Shakespeare, King Lear, Nahum Tate, and Thomas Bowdler is really starting to make me want to bring up the phenomenom of fanfiction in this essay. Which is something I'm interested in and could put an interesting spin on my paper if I decided to try it. But I don't know if I should or not. Gar. They should not require research papers at the end of spring quarter. It's just not cool.

I also have to do all my Quia workbook and lab stuff for this last chapter of Spanish. Bleh. Tonight I have to go see Ran in Wyckoff. Should be good. At least that's one thing I'm looking forward to.

I Rock!

So I was really not looking forward to registration this morning, but it all turned out well. Except that all of the Theology and Ethics classes were closed. But that's OK.

Winter Quarter:
- Spanish 125 (9:00-9:50 AM, M-F) - Natasha and Sara are both in this class, so at least I've got company. Thankfully I won't have to buy any books for it.
- Survey of British Literature II (12:15-120, M-W,F) - I will *finally* get to take this class. Well, OK, so it was just last quarter that I was kept out of it, but y'know. My adviser is the professor. I'm looking forward to it.
- Lit Pix (3:45-5:50, T,Th) - Hopefully this will count for my 20th Century British/American Lit class, but if it doesn't, oh well. It's a class about graphic novels! How could I not take it? Unfortunately, no Neil Gaiman. :( But graphic novels!

So, yeah. I'm happy. Probably going to be dead from all of the reading/writing, but I figure having two English classes can't be much worse than having Philosophy and English.

You know what the best part is though? Registration only took me 3 minutes!
annundriel: (Default)
OMG, now that is funny. I just read that Marton Csokas was in an episode of Farscape. Celeborn isn't an elf, he's an alien in disguise!!

And OMG again. Barry Otto (Doug Hastings) from Strictly Ballroom is in a Season 4 episode. This is just too great.

Anyhoo. Yes, I realize I'm repetitive. I can't help it.

Registration went off without a hitch today. Mine and Olive's. I had to register for her since she works weekends and doesn't have internet access. I got all of the classes I wanted, so I'm very happy. I'll be taking Spanish 115, Philosophy 220, and English 254. I'm really excited about all of them, but mostly about Phil. and Eng. The particular Philosophy professor was recommended to me by Julia. It's Philosophy of the Human person, like all PHIL-220, but it's also Women's Studies. It was closed by the time I registered, but I went to the department and asked to be put in and I was! Last one, too. Hee! And I'll be back to taking English classes which makes me happy since I am an English major. So I'm taking Survey of American Literature. Not my favorite literature ever, but it will be good for me to read more American stuff. And it's recquired.

At any rate, I'm pretty happy right now.

Winter quarter registration was yesterday for freshmen. It's a bitch, let me tell you. My time to start registering was 2:15 pm. I wasn't finished by 4:15. Do it easily online my arse. I kept getting kicked off. So I got two of my classes registered by 4:15, but the philosophy class I needed to take was all full. By then I was an hour and 15 minutes late for work, although I did call saying I hoped to be in by 3:30. Anyway, I basically said, "Screw philosophy!", went to work, and tried again after dinner. It was still full, so I signed up for my first Social Science core class, Intro. to Anthropology. Which I wanted to take eventually anyway.

Also, I talked to my English professor yesterday and she suggested that I take my first Survey of British Lit. class instead of English 120, which I don't have to take as an English Major. BUT it was full up when I tried to register. AND my adviser said I should take 120. So I'll talk to my prof today before/after class and see what she thinks. As of this moment, I'm registered for English 120. I figure better to be safe than sorry, right? And I chose the one at 7:45 in the morning. I didn't want another 7:45 class, but if I can do it this quarter, I can do it next quarter.

I am, however, happy to report that I kicked some major booty on ALL THREE of my midterms. Oh yeah. I'm off to a nice little start here at college. I don't know if it is just the school I'm going to or what, but thus far it is much easier than I was expecting. Thus far.

**

Monday I went and saw A Midsummer Night's Dream as performed on campus. HILARIOUSLY funny and racy as all get out. I mean...Whoa. People were shirtless and there was an orgy! And this at a Jesuit university! :-O

**

EB came by on Tuesday to do stuff. It was raining heavily (D'uh, it is Seattle.) so we didn't go up Broadway for lunch like we were planning. Just popped over to Starbucks across the street. It was kinda funny though. Before she left we were sitting in the lobby and my RA passed by so I waved and he smiled and EB turned to me and was all, "That guy smiled at you." "Yes, EB. He's my RA." "Oh," she says. "I'll stop dropping hints then."

It was pretty funny if you were there. Honest.

**

Wednesday I went to Straight: A Conversion Comedy (a filmed performance about the movement to convert gay and lesbian people) with one of the girls on my floor. It was on campus as part of the academic salons they've been doing. It was hilariously funny and very interesting. The guy who wrote and performed it was there and we got to ask questions afterward.
