Kaching

Natasha and I went shopping in the Tri-Cities today. I am now the owner of my very own Coach bag. It was so pretty I couldn't help myself.

Dooney & Burke and Coach in one year. This is either the beginning of a problem or I will not be buying more handbags ever.

Also got a great scarf with the same colors. A happy accident.

ETA: This is the bag in question.
annundriel: ([pr] Lighten Up; It's Just Fashion!)
Because sometimes you just have to say "screw it" and treat yourself to a new red leather bag.

Picture! )

Dooney & Bourke had a page ad for their calf large luna in InStyle magazine and I kinda fell in love and then I kinda obsessed and finally just went, "Hello, paycheck."

And today it came and I took it out of it's plastic and, oh, it felt like butter. Mmmm. It is a thing of beauty.
annundriel: (Notebook (amelie))
Today is for writing porn, I think.

And for reminding myself that while some people are reliable, others are not and I need to stop trying to rely on the ones that aren't.

Also, I have been sitting here doing Mr. Burns fingers and going "What to buy? What to buy?" with my shiny Barnes & Noble coupon. Which is pointless since I know exactly what I'm going to buy. (Hello NCIS season four.) Why I pretend I don't is a mystery.
annundriel: (Darker than Light (sg-1))
My head is kiiilling me and I feel all sore and crappy. Ugh.

But Amazon has shipped my Torchwood DVDs! So that's a good thing. I'd say that it's nice that Amazon will ship pre-orders so that you get them roughly the day whatever you've ordered comes out, but in this case I don't think I'd be able to find the show anywhere around here anyway. Plus, there's no way I'm going to drive around in the snow hoping that the next place will have them. Yea, shopping online.

Now I'm going to go curl up with a blanket and one or two Red Vines and watch CSI.

Shopping

annundriel: (Surprised by Joy (sga))
It wasn't until Mom and I actually got to town and stopped at Costco today that I realized, hey, Saturday Christmas shopping might be a bad idea crowd-wise. A few steps through the door and I was telling Mom, "We are not going to the mall because I will go crazy."

I don't like crowds. They make me really, really uncomfortable. And, well, the only really bad part of Costco was around the electronics and the books. Other than that, it was pretty okay. Plus what we found there totally made it worth it: DVD sets of Robin of Sherwood. There was an actual moment of "OMG SERIOUSLY?!" because I loved this show when I was younger and they ran it on...whatever channel that was...PBS I think. I remember watching that and Star Trek: The Next Generation and Quantum Leap.

I want to say that Robin of Sherwood was what got EB and I into Robin Hood. Dad would build us hay houses every summer (they'd get hauled away every year when someone bought the hay) and we'd make bows and arrows out of Poplar branches and bailing twine and pick corn from the field and ride around on our bikes pretending we were having adventures. And, oh, that was so much fun.

I'm so thankful for my childhood. There really is nothing quite like growing up on the farm with the freedom to have that kind of fun.

Reminiscing aside, we bought both sets of the DVDs today because, seriously, those kind of memories? How could we not? But they're going to Dad for Christmas, so I have to wait. Which I am totally fine with.

Anyway, besides Costco we hit Big R, Target (where Mom bought square plates), and Pier 1 (where I broke an ornament, but they were very nice and understanding and didn't make me pay). Then we went to the movies and saw Enchanted which was so very sweet. I really enjoyed it, especially )
annundriel: (There Will Be Time (sga))
Went downtown with [livejournal.com profile] olivelavonne and [livejournal.com profile] mandapanda0521 for movie, lunch, and shopping. The original plan was to see Perfume, but that matinee was later than we would have liked, so instead we saw Children of Men. Excellent. I'd definitely recommend it.

Barnes & Noble was doing this really wonderful "Buy 1, Get 1 Free" sale for their multiple disc DVDs. So I bought season one of Bones and got a season of Jeeves & Wooster for free. Woo. Good deal if you ask me.

Other than that there's been lots and lots of reading. Good think I like to read, right?
annundriel: (Death Shall Be No More (fs))
The wind is blowing so hard right now I can actually feel it in the floor. It's freaking my out just a little, though I know it's not nearly as bad as it sounds. However, with all of the trees it makes a lot more noise (kind of like the ocean). And then there's the added fun of huge flying branches. It's this type of wind that ruins everything but the slightest breeze for me. You Seattle people that always say, "I love the wind," are crazy.

The weather was weird all day anyway. We went to Wenatchee and it started snowing huge wet flakes and didn't stop for about four hours. At one point there was talk that roads were going to get closed and speculation that we'd be stuck there. Which would have been fine, I had books and things to occupy myself. Luckily, the snow let-up, but the ride home still took 30-45 minutes longer than usual.

We ended up with 2-3 inches of snow in the yard and Mom and I went out and took pictures of the Christmas lights (on the one tree) in the dark and those turned out kind of interesting. And now the freaky wind is banging things against the windows and threatening to knock the power out (according to Spokane). And the bad thing here is, since we use our own well-thing, if we lose power, we lose water. I remember the first time I lost power in Seattle and still was able to have running water. It was like, wow, modern conveniences!

In other news, I got most of my Christmas shopping done! Although, holy crap, we went to Walden Books/Borders in the mall in East Wenatchee and they did not have a single book by Virginia Woolf or James Joyce. There was a bunch of Kerouac and Twain and that Garrison Keillor and manga. Weirdos.

Not that Woolf and Joyce are special or anything, but I was (am?) feeling at a cross-roads reading-wise and thought, hey, I liked To the Lighthouse, let's try something else. No? Okay, Irish Lit is coming up soon, let's try Joyce. No? Screw you, you small town hack book store! Screw you! Geez. Moses Lake is smaller and their Hastings would still have Joyce. (And now I'm going to go to Hastings and they won't.)

Country life. Ain't it grand?

(OMG, do you know how much it hurts me to write "ain't" and leave it?)
annundriel: (Buy This Place & Watch It Fall (fs))
Senior Synth - Fr. Cobb hasn't taken the Lord's name in vain or sworn yet, but he's a lot funnier than I realized he would be. Especially when it comes to analyzing the advertisements in The New Yorker. Who knew page ads of cars were hilarious?

Modernism in Art and Lit - Dr. Tung, in the meantime, has said "shit" several times every day. It's kind of hilarious. Today he bounced around the front of the room in a button-up shirt and sweater-vest. There's just, I dunno, something fantastic about that to me. As I told Fr. Cobb last year, I like Tung because he's engaging.

Buddhist Philosophy - Frustrating. Sort of. Yesterday we were still going Buddhism 101-type things and covering some vocab. Which is good if a little boring. However, the professor only actually spelled out about a third of the words we talked about, making it very difficult to take notes on. How can I know that what I'm reading is what we've talked about when I don't know if the pronunciation is going to match the spelling?

Grr. Yesterday I got fed up with it so the whole second hour was devoted to keeping my head down and writing (original and fanfiction). It makes the time go a lot faster and I really am not missing anything (so far).

Tonight we're going to see Doubt at the Seattle Rep. I'm really looking forward to it.

This last weekend Mom came over and I got to go shopping. Got some seriously nice things (like a snazzy jacket and shoes) and some seriously silly things. How can I not get the only Colonel O'Neill action figure at Suncoast? I mean, come on. He was all alone. He needed buying. Now I need Daniel Jackson to go along with him. This will lead to moments of intense immaturity on my part (and the part of my roommate). But, hey, when you're a senior in college you need moments of intense immaturity.

Back to watching BSG. Only three episodes left and I'll be caught up! Except for the webisodes.
annundriel: (How to Read the Stars (fs))
Today's trip to Moses with Grandma was an exercise in keeping my mouth firmly shut. Couple of reasons for this: 1) I'm not going to get into an argument about race with my grandmother and 2) she's 80+ and not likely to change her mind.

Besides that, though, it was a pretty nice trip. Got Veronica Mars season two and BSG 2.0. Oh! I even found those Pocky cookie-things at Safeway. I didn't think I'd find those in the boonies, but they had them. Mmm. Chocolate covered biscuit sticks.
annundriel: ([sg-1] SG-1)
Yesterday was a good shopping day. I got three of the four things I set out to get: the soundtrack to Superman Returns, the new Muse CD, and the first season of the new Doctor Who. Wasn't able to find the soundtrack to PotC2, but the trip would have been worth it for the DVDs alone. A little pricey, but anyone who knows me knows that I don't really care. I mean, I did buy all four seasons of Farscape and those are worth an arm and a leg. If I want it, I'm going to get it. Anyway. Also got some really neat earrings and a new bag from Target. Yea Target.

Had Chinese food for dinner and talked about Captain Jack (not Sparrow) and then came home and watched the final two episodes off of the DVDs. So now I'm caught up with last season and rather sad I don't have more with me right now.

Luckily, SG-1 and SGA started tonight to distract me.

Anything under a cut is going to have spoilers.

SG-1 - Flesh and Blood )

SGA - No Man's Land )

Randomly, a visit to the set of Neil Gaiman's Stardust. There's even a picture! (Exciting, I know.)

Cheers!
annundriel: (Bored (tc))
Going to Wenatchee with Mom later. Hopefully will actually be able to buy some of the things I've been looking for. What I wouldn't give for a Best Buy or a Suncoast or some really thorough, decent movie/music store. Although, oh, I guess there is FYE in the mall...hmm.

My Sports Night DVDs came about a week ago. Finished watching the series. Boy, that John de Lancie sure is everywhere. Heh, he was even in the original Battlestar Galactica. For me he will always be Q.

Randomly, our new air conditioner unit-thing is Dalek-like.

Now to take some Tylenol and make myself presentable.
annundriel: (Strange & Beautiful (ff))
Seattle is lovely. The weather has been beautiful.

Saturday Mom and I picked up Natasha to go kitchen/bathroom supply shopping for the apartment next fall. I feel like a dork for getting excited about cutting boards and shower caddies, but whatever. I'm used to feeling like a dork.

We also saw Superman Returns. If you've ever talked to me, you probably know how I felt about this movie. I liked it. I plan on seeing it once more in the theater with Mom and Dad because they will understand the love I have for this look at Superman mythology and heroes in general.

It also made me hate Smallville just a little bit more. Man, they've screwed it up pretty well, haven't they?

Despite watching Sci-Fi's marathon of The Twilight Zone I have yet to see their preview for SGA with McKay. I've seen the Sheppard one tons, but since I don't have great internet here, I can't exactly watch the new one on the computer. But, hey, I love the commercials they do show and every time I see one I get more excited that both shows will be back in a week and an half. Woo.

Anyway. Will be going home either the fifth or the sixth. Probably the sixth.
annundriel: (Could Use a Drink (cplng))
Tonight was a lot of fun. Wednesday was Sara's 21 birthday, so I suggested we go out to dinner and drinks. Sara, Lisa, Natasha, and I walked downtown to Mexico at the top of Pacific Place and had a lovely late dinner. I had some excellent chicken enchiladas and a seriously tasty hibiscus flower margarita. YUM.

Then we went to Barnes & Noble and I got to collections of young adult books by John Bellairs. I remember the first time I heard of him was on the way to Mt. Spokane for a bike race with my cousins. We listened to The House with a Clock in Its Walls the way there and back and I really enjoyed it. That was sometime in elementary school. After that I remember checking out every book of his that our dinky school library had. Also, Edward Gorey illustrated most of the books, so at the very least they would have that going for them. I ended up in the young adults section looking for John Bellairs as something to recommend to Tris, but when I saw that they were coming out with "The Best of..." collections, I stared for a little while, grabbed a copy of each collection, and bought them for myself. That's a little piece of my reading childhood. And I think a couple of them are books that I wanted to read but was never able to find. I'm excited.

I also allowed myself to be talked into getting a membership with B&N. Now they can stop bugging me. I figured it was fine since here at school I'm much closer to one than I ever was at home. Plus, maybe I can save some money by looking at B&N.com instead of Amazon.
annundriel: (Hardly Working (btvs))
Yesterday Sara came over with mashed potatoes (hand mashed!) and meatball-things. We traded episodes of Farscape and Space Above and Beyond. Good times.

Today, Natasha and I walked downtown so that I could buy my own copy of BSG season one. I'm so forcing the miniseries on my parents over break. Also bought a Vienna Teng CD. I've just recently gotten into her music, and I really like what I've heard so far. Especially "My Medea." (Woo, mythology!)

Meanwhile, I have four and an half pages written about Paradise Lost. Need about four more pages to finish it. And then I am *done*.
annundriel: (Default)
We get pointless assignments in Mythology because we kicked puppies in a past life. She just wants to make sure we watched Amadeus and didn't bugger off. Too bad hardly anyone stayed.

POINTLESS. I mean, seriously. Screw this, I'm going to bed. Homework can be done in the morning.

Watched The 40 Year Old Virgin with Kay. Hilarious. Adorable for all its vulgarity. Love Steve Carell.

Really liked SG-1 this week. Love Mitchell more and more. Also caught the beginning of BSG and the last five minutes (waiting for SG-1 to come 'round again). There will be some serious questions about those last five minutes when I get to Philosophy.

Speaking of, [livejournal.com profile] trademybike - I'll bring some of your DVDs to class. Still have to finish the mini.

Had a lovely time shopping downtown with Julia. We should do that again sometime! Got a brown jacket, a shirt, and a book. Wore the jacket to work and was complimented on how nice I looked. Woo.

My exciting plans for Valentine's Day include going to class and work. I am the most exciting, social person ever.
annundriel: (Zoe/Wash (ff))
Apparently last night Natasha had a dream featuring MacGyver. And she doesn't even *like* the guy! Ha.

Spent the day with my mom and most of it at the mall. Bought some stuff at Lane Bryant. Bought Stargate (the movie), Eerie, Indiana, and Knowing Me Knowing You with Alan Partridge at Suncoast. Yea. Like I don't have enough stuff to watch. And then we went back to my aunt's house and I crashed on the couch.

Watched Bones and House. Loved the scene with House and the little girl. And House and his iPod. And just House in general. Chase was also adorable. And, the thing I've been waiting for, Nip/Tuck! There was a lot of cringing on my part. I don't like stuff that has to do with skin, so the woman and the couch was a little ::shudder:: ew. But, y'know, fun times. I've missed cringing at it every week.

Caught part of Smallville on ABCFamily. "Heat," I think it was. With Desiree. Made me kind of sad because Lex and Clark used to be so cute together. And now they suck, like Jeff, in the bad way. Woe. Explained to Mom about the real reasons for Clark being so "Your wife's an evil bitch!" to Lex. Y'know, the reasons where the subtext is more than just subtext and Clark and Lex luuuurve each other v.v. much and Clark's jealous and mad that Lex got married to a girl. Pointed out that the show is much more fun if you read stuff into it.

So, anyway. Classes start tomorrow/today. For everyone but me! Somehow I worked it so that I have Wednesdays completely open. Woo. Except I plan on working at night starting next week. But other than that...It will be nice to have that break mid-week to regroup and catch up and do homework and slack off.

Splurge!

I am weak. I'm a weak, weak person.

I was bored and wandering around Amazon.com and then Amazon.co.uk just sort of browsing what they had to offer. Made the mistake of searching "Joe Flanigan" at UK. I resisted the temptation of the shiny SGA DVDs, mostly because I want to be able to play them on my computer. Could not, however, resist the temptation of Thought Crimes. 'Cause I can't find it over here. And...and...Joe!

I'm thinking that the region-free DVD player I invested in last year is going to be one of my best purchases ever.

Hee!

Faux busy day. There was a wedding near the Tri-cities, so we had to drive out there to set up some of the flowers/arrangements. Didn't take too long, but it was uncomfortably warm in that hall and I do not envy those people. Something like 800 guests.

Dad said that there was no way they would do the same wedding/reception thing for me. Apparently my parents plan to help me elope. Which, all in all? Would be totally fine by me.

Afterward, we did actually make it to the Tri-cities and went to the mall where there was precisely diddly-squat playing at the cinema. So we went to an late lunch/early dinner at Red Lobster. Mom called it "linner," which lead to me trying to teach my parents something new. But do they make things easy for me? No. No, they don't.

"Do you know what the word is for that? When you connect two words and make a new one?" I said.

Dad answered, "A conjunction?"

"No, that involves an apostrophe."

At that point I'm about to do the whole, "Fine, I won't tell you" routine. And then our waitress came by.

"Well, why don't you tell our waitress what it means?" Mom said. The waitress turned and looked at me and I'm just going "why?!" "We have an English major at the table," explained Mom.

"Oh," the waitress asked, "what are you going to do with that?" Because you can't tell people you're an English major without having them ask you what the hell you're gonna do with your life. It's just not done. But apparently her daughter's getting a sociology major, so she understands.

ANYway. All I wanted to do was share knowledge! Finally got to explain what a portmanteau was. And then it turned out our waitress was a teacher! And had been a librarian! So we talked for a little while about opportunities and things. It was nice.

Later I spent part of lunch defending McKay to my parents. Who rather snidely said that he acts like a twelve year old. And I argued, "Well, not *all* the time." (Mom's also getting tired of his "are you sure this water's sanitary?" routine.)And then tried to defend possible emotional and social reasons for McKay's behavior. Also blamed, um, less strong writers on the show. Don't know if I succeeded.

Neesha stopped by and watched Sci-fi Friday with me. That was nice. Nothing really to say, mostly because I need to re-watch "Origin." And Runner )

Tom used a crutch to squish a GINORMOUS spider tonight. I haven't laughed so hard in a really long, long time. There were even tears involved. Heh. So funny. And then I watched The Red Green Show and that just made the evening funnier. And Colin Mochrie (sp?) was on! With Harold. It was great.

Sometimes Brit Lit delivers.

::discussing Heart of Darkness::
DR. SMITH: Rivets are...
JEFF: Rivets are blah blah bliddy blah (I stopped paying attention, you see)
LADY WHOSE NAME I CAN'T REMEMBER: That's riveting.

*

Had a pretty nice weekend. Mom came over Friday and it was really good to see her. We went to the mall and bought out Suncoast. Angel Season 5, Wonderfalls, and Stargate SG-1 Season 1. Yea. Shiny things to distract me from the crap that is school. Didn't do much other than that on Friday. Kinda took it easy. Saturday we went to the mall again and bought a couple of shirts. They're pretty. One of them is this cashmere sweater that I've been looking at for at least a month. It had been pretty expensive, but I got it on sale 65% off. Go me.

Then Kay, Mom, and I went and saw Closer. So good. Pretty people being pretty fucked up. Natalie Portman was great. Clive Owen was (is this a surprise?) *awesome*. (And not bad to look at. The part with the sweater and the jeans and the no shoes? Mmhmm. Very nice.) Anyway. I'm really interested in the fact that I didn't actually hate any of the characters for what they did. Also really liked the ending. And Damien Rice rocks. As I've said before.

And so it is
Just like you said it would be
Life goes easy on me
Most of the time

And so it is
The shorter story
No love, no glory
No hero in her sky

The song's great. And really does fit the movie, especially if you listen to the whole thing. I don't think the final line of the song actually made it into the film anywhere, but I could be wrong.

Anyhoo. Sunday we watched the Oscars. Personally, I'm glad Million Dollar Baby won Best Picture. I've only seen Finding Neverland beside MDB in that category, but I don't think I would have liked the others, or have been touched/moved to the same extent by the others, as I was by MDB. Great film. See it.

Now Mom's gone and I'm stuck at school and blah. Can't wait for spring break.

Mom and Dad came over Thursday night for the various gift shows in Seattle. Mom spent Friday and Saturday buying stuff for the flower shop. Fun.

Friday Dad picked me up at the dorm after I had my meeting with Dr. Cumberland. It went really well. Really liked talking with her, but still not sure what I think of her in class. We came up with a topic for my research paper, but I think I'm going to change it a little. The idea we came up with had to do with a Classics Illustrated edition of Frankenstein and comparing it with the actual text. But that's going to require hunting down an out-of-print comic. Or finding another version. Which takes *time*. Not a whole lot of that lying around here. So, over the weekend I found a version of Kafka's The Metamorphosis. I'll run that by her on Tuesday.

So Dad picked me up and we went to Kay and Greg's where we watched I Love the 90s, Part Deux and I Love the 70s. Then we went and picked up Mom and spent the night watching the Sci-fi channel. Claudia Black was on SG-1! She was awesome and hilarious. Li'l bit of a girlcrush there. I even had a Stargate: Atlantis related dream. Don't remember it very well.

Saturday we went to the mall and I bought Coupling Season 4!! (Jack!) And Farscape: Peacekeeper Wars!! (Yea!) Also bought a couple of CDs. That night, instead of going to a movie - we were all too tired, we stayed in and randomly watched Ginger Snaps. Not entirely sure just what I thought about it. Didn't think it was a total waste, at least. Then we watched some crap movie on the Sci-fi channel with John-Rhys Davies.

The "major" thing that happened Saturday? A little while after the crap movie finished, I finished reading Barefoot Gen. Really enjoyed it. But it kicked my ass. And then it used my kicked ass to wipe up the floor. Damn, but it was upsetting. At one point near the very very end, I had a slight panic attack at one of the pictures. All I could think was, "OMG, get it away. I can't look. I can't look." I *cried*. It killed me.

Today we saw Nana Fran and went to Barnes & Noble, where Mom bought Jon Stewart's book about America. Then my parents went home. And, yeah, that's about it. Neesha finally gave me her opinion about the very small piece of writing I sent her last week. So I sent her another piece of fanfiction. This one was finished! And even got feedback for already! Score. So, that's awesome. Makes me want to write more. Which is a very *good* thing.

But now, it's off to bedforshire with me.
