Still Alive!
Oct. 9th, 2008 03:47 pmI survived my first day of substitute teaching! WOO.
Everyone at the elementary was really happy to see me. Mostly because they worked there when I was in elementary school. It was great. Especially seeing the people who work in the office. And my old second grade teacher.
I spent the day as an elementary PE teacher. Crazy. I had one class of fifth graders, two classes of second graders, a class of third, and a class of first graders. In fact, the first grader teacher was my first grade teacher. That was all sorts of weirdness. The teacher I was filling in for wanted to make it as easy for me as possible, since he didn't know my comfort level with PE, and luckily I got there before he left. So I spent the day walking with the kids around the high school track. You'd think that would be kind of dull for kids, but at the mention of "high school" their eyes just light up and there was cheering in the tiny wooden bleachers.
Plus, I got lots of little 'round-the-waist hugs and kept finding my hands full of little tiny ones vying for attention. And that's always a sweet sort of feeling. One of them even drew me a picture and wrote me a note. Aw.
The only bad part is that I think I may wake up without a voice tomorrow. Oh boy, do you need a whistle or a megaphone outside.
So. Clearly this is something that, once done, did not leave me completely out of my depth. I'll always be nervous going in - which basically happens when I leave the house to interact with the world - but I think I'll be able to handle this. We'll just have to see about the middle and high schools now.
