When Lars and the Real Girl Are Engulfed in Flames?

Some title mash-ups just don't quite work.

Just finished Lars and the Real Girl. Excellent, lovely movie. There was something very sweet about the film. Sweet and quiet. Everyone in it was fantastic.

Also, another interview with David Sedaris about writing and his latest book When You are Engulfed in Flames.

I really loved the way this film was made. Like...it was handling the subject as gently as the town was handling Lars. If that makes sense.

His sister-in-law was fantastic. And putting together Lars was very interesting to try and do. His mother passing away when he was born, the blanket that he carried with him everywhere (the way he'd hold it like a shield sometimes), the layers of clothing and not wanting to touch and yet the way he still wanted to take care of people. Which led to how incredibly safe Bianca was because she couldn't actually touch him. Plus, she can't hurt him unless he decides that she can. I like the little parallel with the fake flowers she gets after going to church and how they can't die and he thinks that's so great.

I could go on, but then I'd just be going on and on. And I knew in the end he'd work through what he needed to work through and she'd stop being what he needed. Oh! And I loved the shot of Lars and Margo shaking hands after they go bowling. There was something really bare and lovely about her hand in his, just for that moment.

And no, I don't have the book yet. :( Maybe tomorrow. Or when I'm in Seattle. Hopefully.

One of my favorite scenes was when he was singing.
I love how he wasn't really singing it to the dummy, but rather to the world or something else.

I really love how you caught the whole unfolding/treatment of the film. I really felt like it was unwinding a bolt of fabric.

There is also the scene where Lars revives Margot's bear, it's as if he's blowing life back into his life. I geeked over that for a good 10 mins. I had to stop the movie and rewind it a bit. =]

Blah. Like I've said before, I wish we could take media classes together, because none of my classmates ever seem to want to talk about themes, theories, or any of that other stuff that goes into a well written script... nor how to convey words into visual representations!!
