Sci-fi Friday. Woo!
Sep. 9th, 2005 09:33 pmSci-fi Friday. Again. With new episodes. Yea!
Apparently I become pretty shallow when I watch Stargate.
SG-1 - "Babylon"
I really enjoyed this ep. Don't know if it was because it felt more like they were getting into the swing of things or what. Maybe it was because Mitchell finally got to do some stuff. (Shirtless, even.) I'm just a little bit in love with Cameron Mitchell I think. Loved everything about knowing what it was to experience death and the belief that you shouldn't suffer for your faith. I wish I could remember more of it, but I want to say that through most of what Mitchell said about the Ori and belief and faith I was nodding and basically agreeing.
Also, Ben Browder is *amazing* when he has to act in pain or being tortured or do anything physical. He's amazing all the time, but it always strikes me how good he is when they're knocking the crap out of him.
So, anyway, some random, rambly, non-sensical thoughts:
- Why black for the new outfits? Is that good for hiding? I mean, what are they planning on hiding in, a coal mine?
- For a moment at the beginning I thought Mitchell was wearing a bandanna on his head, too. Then I realized it was his hat and it was *backwards* and I giggled and just *love*. Hee! Also, bandanna!
- One of my favorite things about the whole Stargate-universe is all of the recurring background/extra characters. I don't think I really count Walter and, say, Dr. Lee in this. They've risen above. But people like Siler, who may not get mentioned in an episode, but sometimes you can spot him in the background working on something. It's just neat.
- DANIEL: You're kidding!
WALTER: I would never do that, sir.
HAhahahaha. Walter! *Love*.
So, yeah, some really great points there, huh? ;) For some reason I have trouble *really* paying attention during SG-1. I blame SGA. Because mostly I want the episode to hurry up and get to those other yahoos out there saving the world. But I enjoyed this. Liked the dude Mitchell got stuck with. Appreciated the fact that he was willing to listen. How funny that CSM is now a creepy ass Prior. Not a lot of Sam in this ep, though, was there? And Teal'c seemed very calm about the whole you-worshiped-false-gods-longer-than-me-neener-neener thing. I would have, like, I dunno. Gotten pissed off. ::shrug::
I think I'm also coming to the conclusion that I'm not that fond of Landry. (I keep accidentally pronouncing it "laundry.") I miss Hammond! Still haven't *really* seen season eight, at least not in context of the rest of the seasons, so I can't speak to Jack's general abilities.
I guess I miss Jack, too. It's kind of strange. When I'm not actually watching season nine and reading lots of SG-1 fic and watching earlier seasons, I think ahead and I miss Jack's presence in the episodes. But when I sit down on Friday nights to watch SG-1? I completely forget that someone is missing. I guess points to Ben Browder for that.
SGA - "Conversion"
These shows really *are* more fun when you're not spoiled! I knew what was going to happen in the overall ep, but I had no idea Sheppard was gonna lay one on Teyla. Whoa. It actually left me feeling a little uncomfortable, which was maybe what it was supposed to do? The whole scene I was going, okay, Shep's kinda dangerous. And, yeah, hot. But also...well. I dunno. Can't articulate it. Part of me is worried that the slasher in me is taking over and won't want to see *any* het on the show. Which isn't true. There's some pairings I'd love to see. I guess my thing is I'd rather they left any romantic attachments between regulars kind of out of the picture.
Not that what happened between Sheppard and Teyla was a big romantic attachment. Felt more...instinctual to me. Like the whole Wraith-bug thing lowered his inhibitions and he just went with it. Or something.
Also, the kiss with Teyla could be seen as the makers of the show backing away from pushing any one pairing. I mean, usually we get all of this Sheppard/Weir stuff and lately some Ronon/Teyla stuff. And can you blame Shep for taking the opportunity? I mean, she's no Claudia Black/Aeryn/Vala, but Rachel Luttrell certainly isn't unattractive.
But what was with the "call me John" thing? I mean, she called him John in "Condemned." So, really, no big.
Anyway.
- Sheppard and McKay at the beginning. My first thought was that McKay was making a big deal about his splinter just so he could stick around with Sheppard and make sure he was okay. Also, it'd be kind of a nice distraction to have McKay's familiar whining at your side after you've just been attacked by freaky Wraith girl.
- Sheppard and Ronon running. So funny! Hee.
SHEPPARD: I'm not a jerk when you beat me.
RONON: Yes, you are.
- Novak! And Hermiod! They got a mention. Yea! I want more Novak and Hermiod. I want some McKay interaction with both of them. Maybe Zelenka, too. The show needs more Zelenka.
- Personally, I think Weir has more chemistry with Caldwell than she does with Sheppard.
- Okay, so in the commercials and the pictures I thought Sheppard's make-up was a little, um, silly. Ish. But it totally worked, for me, on screen. At about the same moment, Mom and I turned to each other and said, "He does intense psycho *really* well." And JF totally does. Go him. Before he got really freaky, like right before he broke the glass in Weir's office (and some other part I can't remember), I could see the Sheppard that really *will* kill you dead ten times over if you fuck with his people. So cool.
- Also, gorgeous shot of Atlantis at night.
- I'm really liking Major Lorne. And I loved that the first time on the planet, McKay was as cool and calm as he gets about things. Focused and getting a job done, while still being himself. See, Lorne, *that's* why McKay is on Sheppard's team.
- The scenes with the team worrying over Sheppard. Aw. The exchange between Weir and McKay about the private, personal, final good-byes. :( And McKay trying really hard to be completely normal when Sheppard appears to go through the gate with them near the end.
- There wasn't a lot of McKay in this episode, was there? Although, he does look very nice in the grey/black. :)
- Sheppard. In civilian clothes. Yum. It was all about the neck and the forearms. :)
I'm gonna miss it next week. And, my god, what am I going to do when it goes on hiatus?? Woe!

Last night was weird. Couldn't sleep *at all*. Went to bed before two and tossed and turned for over an hour. Got back up around three, came up to the kitchen, and read fanfiction that made me cry.
Coda by
kres. Two months later, Daniel wakes up with sand in his mouth. It's set after "Moebius Pt. 2" and it's gorgeous and painful. The storytelling and writing is beautiful. Even if I didn't love the characters so very much, I think I'd still find this story poignant and lovely.
Like I mentioned about, I think I get shallow when I watch Stargate. Or I don't ask for much. Or when I first saw season eight's finale, I wasn't involved enough with the show to really appreciate it all. But after reading Coda? I'm kind of dissatisfied with it. Because that was some serious shit they went through, and they just glossed over it. And...just...no. I mean, Daniel was the only one left. He watched the rest of SG-1, his family, die around him. And then AU-Jack and Sam and Teal'c show up and that's gotta hurt. To have seen them die and then suddenly have them there again, but they're not *them*.
Which leads me to the question that it seems like everyone else has asked and answered: Is the SG-1 we spent eight years getting to know gone? I mean, I know they died waaaaaaay back in the past and everything, but since the whole purpose was to work things so that their timeline remained the same wouldn't that mean that that ended up never happening? Or something? Time travel confuses the hell out of me.
But I guess the original SG-1 is dead and gone and dust. And, damn, that's just *sad*.
Anyway, read and went back to bed at four and *finally* fell asleep. Spent most of the day kind of in a haze. Watched a couple more episodes of Lost. Finished with "Walkabout," which from all the episodes I had a chance to see, had one of my favorite endings. Actually, I think I just love all of the ep endings on Lost. It's a beautifully shot show and they know how to work what they've got.
Tomorrow, we go to Wenatchee for school shopping. Maybe a movie. We shall see.
