Supernatural - "Family Matters"
I found the episode to be a bit...underwhelming. Mom even wandered off a little during it. It wasn't so much what was going on in the episode, but the pacing felt a bit off.
- Last season, I would occasionally get a little too excited when Jensen did the "coming up next" bit. Nothing compared to when Misha does it now, though. :D
- Cas fisted Sam like a boss. And then he fisted Samuel. Dirty.
- I liked seeing Dean insist that Sam answer any questions Cas had. He trusts Cas.
- Cas is as large as the Chrysler Building in true form. And is using sarcasm more heavily. Oh, Cas. I am a bit concerned that Dean still doesn't get it. I hope he gets it soon. I mean, COME ON, sure there is really awful stuff going on with Sam and with Samuel and in general, but a civil war in Heaven. That's a big fucking deal, Dean. Put on your grown-up pants and DEAL WITH IT.
Especially if you take into account how large Castiel's true form is. I just finished a book that dealt with Greek gods and magic, so I'm thinking of what happens when you have larger than life figures fighting (particularly titans and gods). This is not a good thing.
I am hoping something happens to make Dean realize how big of a deal this is and how much stress Cas is under.
- Vampire father dude is a CYLON. That can't be good. Cylon vampire? Vampire cylon? There are many copies, and they have your blood.
- So here is what my mom wanted to know: Samuel wasn't letting Sam in on what he was doing interrogating the monsters before this. Then he found out Sam didn't have a soul and said Sam couldn't be let in on it because Samuel couldn't trust him. So if Samuel didn't know about the lack of soul before, why wasn't he letting Sam in on that part?
- Christian is possessed by a demon. Not too surprised. But, seriously, what is up with Corin Nemec's hair?
Mom was upset they felt the need to slip so far into a pissing contest between him and Dean, though. I think at one point she was like, "Why don't you just whip it out, guys."
- Crowley is behind this. He pulled Samuel down and Sam up. He wants Purgatory. How do they not know where Purgatory is? And he's keeping Sam's soul to get what he wants.
And we're back to interesting philosophical questions: if Sam's soul is still in the cage with Michael and Lucifer (having a TEA PARTY), what makes Sam Sam? If his soul makes him human, than what gives him that still recognizable personality? Because he's still Sam, he's just...not quite right.
Hmmm, and now I'm reminded of Stiff and those experiments trying to discover where the soul resides.
- I do like that so far the season has been moving along nicely. We've gotten some answers way more quickly than I was expecting us to. But as we get answers, we get more questions. I think the overall pace so far has been a lot more even than last season, where they seemed to forget about the looming apocalypse until, yeah, it wasn't so much looming as stomping on them.

Date: 2010-11-07 12:03 am (UTC)THIS. SERIOUSLY WTF? I think the hair people read "evil people for dummies" or something and thought slicked=evil.
That man, having met him in person, is FUCKING HOT. And they've managed to make him look like an ugly, over the hill, looooooser. wtf spn.

I adored him on SG-1.

Date: 2010-11-07 03:25 am (UTC)Oh, Cas. When he said "Your problems come first," I kinda wanted to smack Dean upside the head for being so dense.
"But, seriously, what is up with Corin Nemec's hair?"
XD Yeah...having watched him in SG-1 since I last saw him on Supernatural, I agree. However, his Supernatural hair is better than his lesbian haircut from his final SG-1 episode. ;)

Date: 2010-11-08 03:18 am (UTC)Me too! I kinda couldn't believe he actually said what he did! I mean, I should have, given his behavior before, but I guess I hoped after 6.06 that maybe he would start to have, like, an inkling of where Cas is coming from? But no.
Christ on a cracker, Dean, when will you learn?
You are right. Corin's hair is better than whatever happened to his head that last time on SG-1.

Date: 2010-11-07 06:09 am (UTC)Mom was upset they felt the need to slip so far into a pissing contest between him and Dean Yeah, the whole “Your wife” thing was too juvenile even for Dean. But, seriously, what is up with Corin Nemec's hair? I was wondering the same thing. Between him and Sam...
I figured Crowley would get involved at some point as soon as I saw that Sam’s soul was gone in the preview, since that’s his department. Wasn’t figuring on him having stolen it, but yeah.
I agree that there was something off about this episode, and also about the getting questions answered early. I was complaining to Dad after we watched it that every episode we get a question answered and it poses more questions. And presumably if the demons have never been/can’t get into Purgatory it makes sense that they wouldn’t know where it is. Expecting the alphas to know makes no sense though. I mean, if they don’t go there until they die, why would they know where it is any more than we know where Heaven or Hell

Date: 2010-11-10 06:23 am (UTC)I really should have thought of Crowley before this in connection with Sam. I'm glad I wasn't spoiled for his appearance here, though. That was a nice bit of surprise.

Very good points. Though does the same work for the locations of Heaven and Hell? Clearly the angels know where Hell is, but does that work the other way? Now I really just want more of the behind-the-scenes information on how SPN's world works.

Date: 2010-11-07 03:29 pm (UTC)Me too. This would be a perfect opportunity for the real Trickster (or even surprise!Gabe) to teach Dean a lesson by turning him into Cas- it has nothing to do with the fact that I would love to see Human!Hunter Misha/Cas and Tench coat!Angel Jensen/Dean.
'I think the overall pace so far has been a lot more even than last season, where they seemed to forget about the looming apocalypse until, yeah, it wasn't so much looming as stomping on them.'
That is so true. One of the things I hated about last season was that most of the time whenever they had a MOTW episode, the Apocalypse (along with Cas) didn't even get mentioned so it really felt like it was happening in a bubble.
