Southland & NCIS
Mar. 16th, 2010 10:41 pmThank god I have Firefox on this computer or this post would not be happening.
Tonight's Southland ("U-Boat") was fantastic, yes? I feel like they fit so much into an hour. Or, well, more like 42 minutes I suppose.
I loved the stuff with Sherman, especially that he did his job well. There was none of that "oh noes alone on the job for the first time" BS some shows pull. Granted, Southland in general isn't one of those shows to fall back on that for entertainment.
But, Sherman did everything to the best of his abilities and while he lost someone - and punched someone already handcuffed - he handled himself well. And that was wonderful to see. He's not just some kid playing dress up. Not that I ever doubted him. I think I'm just not entirely used to my shows treating characters with the respect they deserve instead of going the easy route of buffonary.
I also really liked Cooper doing the whole worried parent thing at the beginning. D'aww.
Now I think would be a good time to just say that they make me go "aww" a lot in general. Is that weird? It's either aww because they're adorable (Sherman's smishy little face when he smiles) or aww because they're in pain or because they're angry and I want them to not be...My "aww" has many meanings and is multipurpose.
That was sort of a ridiculous paragraph. Sorry?
I was also really happy we got the two scenes of them at the end. And that Sherman called Cooper about the boy and his shoes. They sat on the curb. Cooper shared and called in a favor. Because Cooper may be big and tough and have command presence, but he helps people so there he is helping this kid because it can help Ben because Ben realized he can't save everyone but they can both do this.
And he does it in such an understated, no-big-deal kind of way. It's lovely.
As are their silent scenes together. I very much like that Sherman and Cooper both seem to be the kind of people who don't need to have or make extra noise all of the time. They can be silent and still. And while those still silences can take on tension - anger and frustration in the air - they can also just...be.
I don't know, there are things I'd like to explore here. Probably in fic. Because that's what I do. But I really like that when one of them speaks, the other one really seems to listen.
Anyway, also lovely? Sherman talking to the younger brother in the sister's classroom. I'm just sayin', he is an attractive fella.
Oh, and how about the running bit (theme?) of this episode where Sherman kept helping kids? He found Jane. He stood up for the kid mowing the lawn. They're getting his shoes back. I have to tell myself that not everything means something, but here you've got Sherman - who went through a horrible thing as a child - helping children. (If I really want to push it, you've also got him unable to protect a women the same way he was unable to protect his mother. Though, obviously, she's still alive.)
Can I just say I was really happy he found Jane? Thank goodness. (Also, the mom thought he had "kind eyes." My own mom and I have been watching The OC. Kind eyes, indeed.)
There was also the return of Jimmy. I hope everything works out there. And a furthering of the relationship between Lydia and Cordero as partners, as well as Lydia realizing that maybe she needs to give Russell some breathing room.
As for the scenes with Cooper and Chickie...I think at least some of it needed to be said. On the one hand, I've felt for her in the past because, damn, Dewey is an ass (understatement). One the other hand, especially on the re-watch, she really should have done something about his problems earlier. But then there are issues of partner loyalty and...whatever else. Timidity maybe, which would go hand-in-hand with Cooper's accusation that she's become soft and didn't report Dewey because she was hiding behind him.
One of the things I like about Cooper is that he just lays things out there (I mean, when he's not not talking about things). He doesn't suffer fools. I think it's been clear in the past that he likes and respects Chickie and I think sometimes you get into a position where you feel victimized and someone needs to come along and kick you in the ass and set you straight.
I dunno. But I really want to see where they're taking her storyline.
Randomly, Cooper searching the guy on the street made me think of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and Perry's thought that you should carry a gun at your crotch because homophobes won't look there.
I have less to say about NCIS. And it's all pretty shallow.
- I like the actress who played the CGIS agent. Took me a pathetic amount of time to finally place her, though.
- I love that Jimmy has a girlfriend.
- Was both sad and happy to see Ducky's bow ties come back. Aw, Ducky.
- Tony was pretty obviously going, "Hey! McGee! Look at me, McGee. Look at me, McGee. Look! Look! Look at me!" with his pirating. Tim just keeps working at his computer. There was also something at the beginning that made me think Tim only said something because Tony was being, I dunno, especially good at hiding their relationship. (Because in my mind, any time Tim says something that gets that slightly almost hurt look on Tony's face, it's because Tony's being a little too persistent at flirting with everyone ever.)
- McGee left Tony and Ziva to watch pirate movies because Tony has already made him watch them. I'm trying to refrain from making jokes about "plundering" someone's "booty", but, well. Tony would totally go there and then Tim would have to shove him against something and do some plundering of his own just to get Tony to shut up.

Date: 2010-03-17 08:55 pm (UTC)I think I would have done better with NCIS if I hadn't been multi-tasking at the time.
