Free to Be, Revisited
Dec. 3rd, 2009 11:07 pmTonight on the CW they replayed "Free to Be You and Me." Much as I love the episode - and, oh, I do, I really do - I also have some issues with it. But that's one of the things fic is for, right? To work through those. Which I have already done.
But the episode is now on my mind and so, a post. I'm mostly just thinking out-loud under the cut. It'll probably be a jumble and lead nowhere.
Pretty much the only thing that throws me about "Free to Be You and Me" is Castiel's behavior. Particularly his behavior when Dean starts to ask him about what he wants to do on what could be his last night on Earth and then starts to push the virgin thing.
Castiel gets jumpy and twitchy and weird. While I love seeing him emote on a less subtle level, it also makes no real sense. He's an angel. Angels do not have sex. Mom and I were talking about the scene tonight as it happened and she pointed out that sex is of the flesh and angels are not. Castiel should not care one way or the other.
Which only gets me thinking about Dean's influence. Maybe the nerves are down to Dean. (Which I will happily argue with slash goggles in place or not.)
We get Castiel swearing in this episode, which I think we can put on Dean's shoulders. We also get Castiel drinking, which is definitely Dean's doing. It's probably not too far of a leap to think that an angel who befriended Dean, who gave up everything for him (to keep his friendship), would then become nervous when something like sex comes up. Because Dean is so obviously a fan of it and Castiel is so clearly inexperienced there.
Which, okay, sometimes I wonder about. When Castiel went off with Chastity and Dean told him not to go "off menu" and stick to the regular stuff, Mom asked how Castiel would even know what the regular stuff was. But he's been around for thousands of years. I can't imagine he doesn't have an idea.
So Castiel could be embarrassed and weird and twitchy, oh!, and defensive ("I never had occasion, okay?") because Dean puts so much emphasis on sex and the having of it.
Otherwise, why would he even give it a second thought?
Of course, if you're me, you like to go with the idea that the weird behavior stems from Castiel's own shiny new emotional experiences surrounding Dean and his time with Dean. He's jumpy because he's starting to want and wonder and long for and the whole emotional experience is new to him.
Anyway. I've got fic to work on. Two things that I was supposed to be working on until Busted hi-jacked my brain. And, um, now I may also be working on a sequel/follow-up to Busted. Apparently when I say, "Take a break from NC-17," my brain goes, "NO DIRTY FIC, WRITE THE DIRTY FIC." ::shrug::
Unrelated,
sdrohc_ratiug did some of her massage therapist magic on me today and OH MY GOD. I...don't even...She only worked on me a short time and it was impromptu, but my back feels so much better. I think I'd forgotten what it was like not to be in constant pain in certain places. I am now considering doing the massage thing regularly again.
Dahlia, hun, you are awesome. In general, not just or the massage. ♥
