Torchwood: Children of Earth
Jul. 21st, 2009 11:50 pm"Day Two"
Less to say about tonight's episode. City council wore me out.
Plot-wise, it seems to me that the kill order list that included Jack must have all been people who were involved with the 456 back in the 60s. Jack was the only one with "active" next to his name and I think I did spot a "retired" by another one. All part of trying to wipe the slate clean and make it look like Britain has no more idea what's going on than the rest of the world does.
That kind of annoys me a little, actually. I mean, there's only so much sweeping under the rug you can do before they show up and say, "Hey, guys! Remember us?" Which is totally awkward. But kind of how politics works, I'm noticing.
Anyway, I realized I like Gwen. As long as she's not around Jack. It's one of those instances where I don't particularly care for the people either of them become around the other. I did like when she called Jack her best friend. Aw.
In fact, I rather enjoyed that whole scene with the raw potatoes. And Rhys. I really enjoyed Gwen and Rhys teaming up.
But, yeah, action Gwen I could get behind. Thought Russell T. Davies said something about how cool and impressive and whatever it was for a pregnant woman to be running around with two guns and kicking ass. Um. No, it's not. She's three weeks pregnant. Whoop-di-ding. A little baby bump and, okay, I'll be a little more impressed. Seven months pregnant and then we'll talk, Davies. But three weeks? I am ruined for kick-ass pregnant women by Farscape. SGA didn't do too bad, either.
Randomly:
- Ianto doesn't like ice cream because it gives him a headache. His father once pushed him too hard on a swing (I guessed) which resulted in a broken leg. His sister says he wasn't holding on hard enough; Ianto says their dad always pushed too hard.
I like learning these things. It's like...noticing how Martin eats the most on Without a Trace deciding that equals stress-eater. Or how Dean uses his ring to open beer bottles. It's the big and small things that make the character, and while the big things may be more important, I love the tiny details.
- Ianto's whole family was kind of great actually.
- I liked that though Ianto and Gwen had completely different routes, they both ended up in exactly the same place. And how great was it that Ianto got to break through there and save them, just when it looked like they were caught? Reminds me of "Countrycide" and Jack breaking into the house with the tractor, actually. Saving the team when it looked like the end. Wow, look how far Ianto's come.
- When they had the bodybag of Jack's surviving pieces and Ianto was watching them from the roof, Mom pointed out that Ianto's built things from less. Which isn't exactly true, but I'll take it.
Also, how disgusting was that regeneration? I was going to say I was surprised he became conscious when he did, but then screaming horribly does not necessarily mean you are mentally aware of what's going on around you. Either way, here was a reminder that coming back from the dead is not painless.
- Lois. I like her. She's observant and thinks for herself. But I am afraid they are going to knock off Ianto and replace him with Lois.
- I feel for Forbisher. And kind of like that scientist guy who seems so fascinated by the 456. And what is that room for?
And why can Clem smell things?
I always love Torchwood, but sometimes when I'm not watching it I forget just how good it can be. These last two episodes have been something else, particularly "Day One." I am impressed.
