Yesterday Mom and I had an early dinner (enchiladas and margaritas, yuuum) and the place we went to had NCIS playing on the TV in the corner which, naturally, led to NCIS discussion.

Mom was surprised when I told her that DiNozzo/McGee was not the biggest/most popular slash pairing from the show. She sat back in her chair, staring and said, "Really?" I think her first guess following that was Gibbs/McGee and then she guessed Gibbs/DiNozzo. The look on her face the whole time was pretty funny.

Of course, this led to a discussion about what we each see on the show and how we see it. I think we both agreed that we could see where the Gibbs/DiNozzo comes from, but have no personal interest in pursuing it. Like any show, there are multiple pairings that fans are attracted to and the DiNozzo/McGee dynamic is the one that happens to interest me. And my mom, apparently. Though I knew this already, what with the running commentary during any episode.

Part of the reason she had trouble seeing Gibbs/DiNozzo was because the two of them are too alike. She called them both alpha males. I argued that this could make for an interesting relationship to explore.

What I really wanted to say, though, was that last night I was thinking about this some more, the alpha male thing, when I remembered something from the season five DVDs. In one of the behind the scenes features, Sean Murray says:

"I think he's always trying to work on his confidence. But I think McGee knows he's not an alpha male and is fine with that. I think he likes his niche."

When I shared that with Mom this morning, her response was basically, "He really said that? Really?"

So, um. Now I kind of really want to use that to write...something. But I have no idea what. All I know is that McGee likes his niche. I feel like something ought to be done with that.

You know, as a subject line that really is quite dirty. ;)

Funny-- there is a theory that I've read that discusses how dramas with multiple alpha-males/females usually work better b/c of two things:

1) they either work really well together and actually team up to aid in the completion of a task

or

2) they are in a constant state of conflict that helps deepen the tension and drama of the show. it's always interesting to watch to conflicting forces work together to make things happen/work.

and yes... he's all up in that niche. ;)

I'm so distracted by your icon...

I think there's definitely truth there, which is why I can understand the Gibbs/DiNozzo relationship on that level. With multiple alpha-males/females, the power struggle is different. And I think that on an episode-by-episode basis, you can explore the two things that you list. Just because the come together one week to accomplish something doesn't mean next week's going to work the same. Finely balanced tension makes it interesting.

The first thing I thought of when I re-read your comment, and particularly that bit right there, was Moonlighting with Cybill Sheperd and Bruce Willis. (Not to be confused with the more recent Moonlight.) When people talk about shows being ruined when their lead characters finally hook up, they usually talk about Moonlighting. But besides the chemistry the characters had, I think the fact that they were both stubborn, strong characters added a lot to the success of their tense relationship. I don't think I would love the show so much if it didn't have that snap between the main characters.

That was kind of a tangent. Sorry. I can't help it. I like talking TV with you! And am sorry I missed you in Seattle. :(

This is random and only partially related, but when I listen to "Poker face", I have a little Tim/Tony picture sequence in my head, where they give each other looks. It makes me giggle.
