So I keep thinking about Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog. Particularly the messed up irony of it all.

In Act I, Penny's almost killed by something Dr. Horrible's created. Or at least has control of. It appears to everyone that Captain Hammer saves her and he has no problem taking the credit. But she's alive because Dr. Horrible stopped the van.

In Act III, Penny's killed by something Dr. Horrible's created. It appears to everyone that he's the one responsible and that's how he gets accepted into the Evil League of Evil. But she's dead because Captain Hammer pulled the trigger.

I think it all ties in with what he says in the first act about how what he's doing is about "destroying the status quo. Because the status is not quo," and how he's "just trying to change the world." Then in the third act he's amazed that no one else can see what Captain Hammer is really like. People want to see what they want to see. Captain Hammer is the "good guy" and they're blinded by that. It's like Horrible's the only one not fooled by it all.

And, okay, there's the whole song at the beginning of Act II that addresses this.

So is Horrible only the "bad guy" because that's the position he's been put in? Good and evil, relative positions?

One of the saddest parts for me, besides the final line, was Penny's final words. She believed in Hammer just as much, even at the very end. Though I suppose a very small consolation would be that she didn't fully realize who Dr. Horrible was.

I was just listening to Horrible's song from the end of Act II and got to the part where he's sitting in the really big chair. The lyrics at that point are focused on Penny and how she'll be sad when Hammer's dead, but she'll dry her tears when he "hands her the keys to a shiny new Australia." The size of the chair makes him look like a kid and it's sort of fantasy like. Coupled with the lyrics, I think it's clear at that point that he does have this strangely innocent, child-like idea of how things are going to play out.

Just because Horrible sees Hammer's flaws doesn't mean he's not blinded. He really believes that he can have the girl and the League. But that's just not possible. This is going to come out as a "duh" statement, but the fact that he had feelings for Penny meant that he had the capacity to care. You can't really be evil if you care. To achieve his goal, that capacity had to be taken away. He had to become someone who really could kill.

So the biggest irony is...he didn't kill anyone, and yet he's got the credit, the status with the Evil League of Evil. They all assume he did this terrible thing because he was capable of it. And he didn't, but now he is capable of it because the one thing that could have kept him caring has been taken away.

It's a hollow victory.

You know what else was really sad? Penny waiting for Billy with frozen yogurt at the laundromat. He lost time with her because he was so focused on destroying Captain Hammer.

Rambly. I can't stop being rambly.

Also, I took the Doctor Who Companion Test because I was bored.

Sarah Jane

You are Sarah Jane. You are clever without being arrogant, adventurous without being impatient, and resourceful while still being naive enough to want to stick around with the old geezer. If The Doctor had favorites, you'd be it. Actually, he does have favorites - and you're it.

You and The Doctor have formed a fast companionship. You've far outlasted most of his other companions, though The Doctor would probably never admit it. Still, though, you could do without some of The Doctor's stand-offish-ness and the roughness of constantly fighting monsters. Maybe one of these days, you can put that journalism degree to use, and start having adventures of your own...

Captain Jack

You are Captain Jack - handsome, charming and always in the right place. The girls (and boys!) just can't seem to get enough of you. The Doctor can't get enough of you either, as you always seem to turn up just when the time is right. You've taken and dished a few beatings, stayed until the bitter end, and always manage to get out of trouble when it suits you. It's almost like you have a knack for being in the right place at the right time.

Still, you've made some stupid decisions in your time, and The Doctor isn't likely to let you forget them. In fact, despite your worldliness and age, you still can't seem to keep up with The Doctor as fast as some of his other companions. Maybe it just wasn't meant to be.
