Confidence
May. 27th, 2008 10:31 pmLast night there was nothing on so I watched part of the Without a Trace reruns they show on TNT. They're at the beginning of season two and I caught a scene that I really like.
In the episode "Confidence," a woman goes missing during her engagement party. It turns out that she's a fraud, but that she had actually found love and was trying to turn over a new leaf. When I first watched it, I didn't really think about why Danny became particularly focused when she turned up dead, but seeing the last half again last night it became clear. To the point that I was going, "Well, duh." And it mostly hinges on the scene that I really like.
In it, Danny and Vivian have gone to the missing woman's storage unit and are going through her things in an attempt to discover who she really is. Vivian finds one of her high school year books and her real name.
DANNY: She didn't just change her name, she was trying to change her life.
VIVIAN: Speaking from experience? (he looks at her, turns to sit) Danny Taylor?
DANNY: What about it?
VIVIAN: So why?
DANNY: (flipping through the year book, he finally looks up) I guess I just wanted a fresh start.
VIVIAN: Did it work?
DANNY: (this time he doesn't look up as he continues to flip through the book) Sometimes.
VIVIAN: So are you going to tell me?
(Danny's phone rings)
DANNY: (smirking) Taylor.
What I like about this scene, besides the relationship between the two of them which I'll elaborate on in a minute, is the body language and the way the actors play it out. Particularly Enrique Murciano. Danny starts out his usual self - a little playful, a little confrontational, confident - and then as he considers Viv's question, he becomes more subdued. More serious. The way he answers her with, "sometimes," coupled with the way he looks sitting there - like a kid who hasn't had it easy and would very much like to forget that - makes my heart ache for him a little.

Plus, the fact that he's admitting that it doesn't always work seems like a big thing. I'm not entirely sure he'd do that for everyone else on the team. At least at this point.
I love the relationship between Danny and Vivian. They're comfortable and friendly with each other. And for as crazy and manic as Danny can be sometimes, Vivian's a good solid person for him to turn to for comfort and guidance. A good example of this being when Danny turns up at Vivian's house when his brother goes missing ("Off the Tracks"). Here again is Danny admitting things to Vivian that he hasn't admitted to anyone else, as far as I know. Only here it's more information about his alcoholism and family life.
I just really appreciate the fact that these characters all obviously care about each other.
