This post is totally self-indulgent. But, hey, aren't they all?
I love Torchwood, there's no denying that. But lately I haven't been watching it like I should. Not for lack of interest, but because my brain's been taken over by CBS. They got me first with CSI, then CSI:NY. Then Dexter. Now? The two big ones are NCIS and Without a Trace. Mostly NCIS.
Because NCIS is made of win. No really, it is. I don't think I've ever run across a show where I've loved every single member of the cast. I can't even be too angry that they're going to kill one of the main team and replace them with someone else after season two because the new member is just as fantastic.
I mean, so far (I'm mid-season two, though I've seen newer episodes) there's Gibbs who is gruff and tough and smacks his team upside the head but then turns around and grins when his team grumbles and goes to work because he loves them anyway. He's building a boat in his basement (my question being, how is he going to get it out of there?) and has three ex-wives and will do some pretty crazy stuff to see justice be served.
Plus, his name's Jethro which I will always find amusing. Seriously, the first episode I saw where he gave his first name I thought he was using an alias. But no. Jethro.
Then there's Kate who used to be Secret Service but now works for NCIS. She's tough and feminine and intelligent and puts up with the guys and holds her own. She started to remind me of Gwen from Torchwood actually. And not just because Mark Harmon and John Barrowman kind of look similar, though that got me thinking about similarities. No, they have the same kind of look in a way, but Kate is so much cooler than Gwen. There would be all of the coolness of Kate and none of the whining of Gwen. It would be great.
There's Abby, who sometimes makes me wonder if she isn't too good to be true, but then I shrug it off because she's Abby and she really is just that good. She can do anything. And if she can't then she asks for help and Gibbs provides and she and a partner get things done.
Usually the person helping is McGee. I love everyone on the show, as I said, but Tim is basically my favorite. If I absolutely had to choose. He's intelligent and geeky and likes poetry and writes mysteries under an psuedonym. He's the newbie and the butt of the jokes, but he's full of surprises, which I love.
Which leads me to DiNozzo. Oh, Tony. He's kind of full of it, kind of a pig, and kind of amazing. Because if he wasn't really good at his job? He wouldn't be there. But he's so good at being this guy that chases women and flirts on the job and doesn't take things seriously that you don't always notice just how serious he really is.
And what I love, what I absolutely love, is the relationship between DiNozzo and McGee. I said McGee was full of surprises? Well, I think that's particularly true with regards to DiNozzo. I mean, they meet and Tony seems to think he's got Tim pegged, telling him that Abby would only be interested in him if he tattooed his ass which he's sure will never happen since McGee is so very not-cool. But by the end of the episode, McGee's left him speechless with implications and I'm just left giggling. And he keeps doing that, keeps saying or doing things that make Tony stop in his tracks. Like a recent episode I saw in which Abby told McGee they just give him a bad time because they like him. So when Tony's being obnoxious with his lunch and offers Tim a bite, Tim says, "Thanks" and takes one before handing it back. And Tony just stares. He was not expecting it. And I just laughed with glee.
ETA: I forgot Ducky! I don't know how that happened! At first I had some reservations about Ducky since I was coming in from CSI and the whole medical examiner thing just reminded me of the ME on there. But now I see that Ducky is kind of amazing and really hilarious. I basically want to take him to lunch and make him finish all of the stories he starts telling people but never gets a chance to finish.
That's definitely part of the reason why I'm finding the show so very distracting. It fills me with glee. Even when the plots are less than happy, there are character moments that are bright and shiny and wonderfully angst-free. Because these characters all like each other, even when they don't, and they work well together. And that's wonderfully diverting.
