Road Trips and Writing

Dad and I are going on a little road trip next Wednesday. I'm really looking forward to it, since the last time I left Washington state I was in high school. So...five to seven years ago. We're driving down through Utah and up through Nevada since I've never been to Utah and the last time I was in Nevada I was roughly three years old. I remember parts of that trip, but, obviously, not a great deal.

Plus, we're going to see people we haven't seen in years and that's very exciting. The last time we saw my brother's godmother I was probably in middle school. Geez.

Before that, there are things I'm trying to get done. Not big things, but things that I've promised people I'd do. I also have a few pieces of writing I'm working on that I'd like to finish, or get nearer to finishing, before we go. However, I've generally become lazy with two of them and am waiting for feedback for the third.

But Sunday I did try my hand at writing what is basically porn. Or porn-like. Not explicit, but maybe a bit R-rated and actually a lot of fun to write. (Will I post it? I don't know. Natasha thinks I should.) Totally helped kick me out of my writing funk, too. Sometimes I get sucked into writing things that are too think-y when what I really need is to just have more fun.

Anyway, mostly I'm proud of myself since it was different and took me a little out of my comfort zone.

I've been cleaning my room for most of today but in little breaks, I've been working on "In the Dark". I hope to have it back to you by this evening.

And *throttle* I still haven't seen "Trio". Luckily we got our cable back today so I don't have to worry about spazzing and missing it.

I'm going to mention this, though I don't know what you'll think. Basically, in your college AU, you have two really really brilliant people who become buddies and become rather tied to one another. There might be some porn. The slight niggle in the back of your mind that I want to point out (that you can totally disregard at any point) is that if you changed the names slightly (so that it wasn't J Shep and R McKay specifically), you could get it published. You wouldn't even need the porn. Just saying. It's...an idea to put in a box and occasionally peek in until you decide what to do with it.

That being said, you totally can choose to disregard that entirely and go on with the regularly scheduled programming.

And, of course, this is the question that comes up whenever an AU idea pops into my head: Do I really want to write an AU or do I go original?

I have mixed feelings about this, though none of them are near the reaction I think you were expecting. Or rather, mixed feelings about this particular example. Mostly dealing with the fact that I still don't know if this particular idea has enough of a backbone for something like that. (Tied in with other lingering writerly feelings.)

Besides which, there's a part of me that, even though I'm only considering it, feels a sense of lose at the idea of changing their names. Like they'd lose something of the character or those characters would be lost. It's a strange emotion.
