SGA - "Trio"
Turns out that the post I made with all of my worries about this episode was basically unnecessary. At least in this particular instance. I still don't trust the writers not to make McKay into the fool when it's convenient for them though.
That said, I actually enjoyed this one quite a bit. A lot more than I was expecting to because of my prior anxiety over it. Pretty much everyone (all whopping three of them) was great. And Rodney shone. The things I'd complained about and worried over seeing before (the inappropriately timed lusting and the showing off) happened in situations where he'd slipped into babble-mode, so I can forgive. Plus, there was the scene in the infirmary where Keller thanked him for saving her life and he had no idea what she was thanking him for because it's not like he would have ever thought otherwise.
Oh, Rodney. ♥
Now some specific things:
- While I appreciate Sheppard wandering around Atlantis sucking onsome phallic candy a sucker, I also kind of wondered where he picked it up. Which is a stupid thing to wonder about, I'm sure, but wonder I did. And then I wondered if there was a story behind why he had it at this particular point and whether or not he was taunting Rodney with it.
- The only behavior that really made me think these people are not as smart as they claim to be was after Rodney fell down into the room. Carter told Keller to spread out her weight, but then the two of them get pretty close together and see if Rodney's okay. Now, I don't think spreading your weight works so well if you're then doubling it because you're not spreading out your numbers. And then they fell and I was like, "Well, d'uh, ladies."
- Rodney's "That's quiter talk!"
- Carter and Keller playing "Who would you rather?" Then trying to get Rodney to join in and Rodney being all, "Huh?" And later what was probably my favorite part of the entire episode, "Carrell or Colbert?" and Rodney answering, "Carrell. But I'd pick Jon Stewart over both of them."
My jaw dropped and I just stared and then laughed and laughed and basically died. OMG, Rodney. (Also, heh, totally my answer in the situation. Love Colbert, but Carrell has this sweet smile thing he does. But add Stewart to the list? Yeah, he trumps them.)
- Zelenka. Oh, poor Zelenka. That's kind of sad. Though I'm sure they're exaggerating. Or kidding. Hopefully.
- Did I hear right, is Katie transferring?
- I liked that Keller called Rodney a nice guy. Mostly I liked the way Rodney beamed crookedly. Aww.
- I became a bit annoyed with Carter when she kept climbing high things after they started creaking and McKay kept telling her to come down. Listen to him! And if you're not going to listen to him, listen to the ominous sound of wood cracking under your weight!
- Rodney babbling. I expected to dislike it, but in the context it was fine. And Keller's little, "Aw, if you'd stayed quiet I thought he'd go on like that forever." Because yes, he probably would.
- So Rodney used an old lady shopping cart when he was in college? I don't blame him; I bet he had a lot of books and things to cart around. (I also can't help thinking that at SU no one would have thought that was too weird.)
- "I'm not leaving you behind." Going back to what I said above about the final scene, it really is a matter of "no one gets left behind." He wasn't going to let Keller fall to her death and he wasn't going to leave Carter behind in that death trap. It's just not what he does.
- "Great, because you know what I was just thinking would be awesome? More physical exertion."
- Rodney wanting to bath in whatever they put on his hands because they were the only things that didn't hurt. And wanting to curl up in a fetal position and sleep for three days. After his hands got all messed up, I kept thinking that he really needed to get a little pampered back on Atlantis. John should keep him entertained.
- KELLER: Chicks dig scars.
McKAY: Not the chicks I dig.
- "Chimps would have figured it out eventually." I do like that Keller kind of dishes things right back to McKay.
- Keller and McKay grabbing a drink. Rodney could use some more girl friends. Or more friends. People that he can just grab a drink with and not talk about work. And so far I like the way these two play off of each other. And that Keller's beginning to see that Rodney's more than what he appears to be on the surface.
I'm totally not reading this as anything more than a friend-thing. Since they've already sort of started down the path of her and Ronon. And Rodney's thing for people named Jo(h)n.
So, yes. All in all, I'm relieved that this wasn't the cringe-fest I was afraid it would be. Instead people got to be competent, with a few adventures in ego, and worked together well.
Oh, so next week Teal'c comes to the Pegasus galaxy. There's all that stuff about "who would win in a fight, Teal'c or Ronon?" But what I want to know is, what about Teyla? How would Teyla and Teal'c get along?
