Torchwood - "To the Last Man"
I can just tell that I'm going to end up using the word "love" way too much in this post. So to try to cut back, maybe a list is in order.
Things I loved and/or had thoughts about:
- Owen and the surprises of his character. I always liked that moment in "Countrycide" when he's treating Gwen on the kitchen table because you can see hints of what kind of doctor he is. And maybe even what kind of man he is to choose medicine (other than the money) as his profession. He's not always a good man, or a likable one, but he's become layered and interesting.
Here we got that same sort of care and understanding. When it was just him and Tosh in the hospital ward and he warned her about getting too close, I couldn't help but remember his own experience with Diane. Speaking from his own experience. And I like that he and Tosh are working on this closer level this season. At least, a less outwardly antagonistic one.
- Toshiko. And Tommy. I was expecting it to be sad, and it didn't disappoint. Geez, show. But I thought they were lovely together, all wide-eyed and timeline-challenged.
For the longest time I thought I recognized the actor playing Tommy, but after looking him up, I think it's just that he reminds me vaguely of Neville Longbottom.
- Ianto and his seriousness. Can you blame him for being a little less cheery? Everything that happened last season and everything I'm sure he's seen and the things I'm sure he's figured out from being around Jack do not add up to a completely happy existence. The whole "nothing changes" and "death by Torchwood" and, yeah, that place will suck the life out of you, literally, if given the chance. But he's not mopey, he's just serious and thoughtful, paying attention to everything.
Which led him to connecting Jack with Tommy and what is basically my favorite scene in the episode because 1) I am just that shallow and 2) omg finally.
- KISSING. But before that, there was Ianto asking Jack if he'd go back to his own time if he had the choice, the implication being "Are you going to leave us (me)?" I love this scene so very, very much. Because Jack's not being entirely serious when he asks if Ianto would miss him, and Ianto's answer isn't exactly formal ("yup"), but it's honest and to the point and there's no real pussyfooting with an answer like that. It's the fact that he says it in such a flippant kind of way that gets me. And the way Jack pauses, because it wasn't what he was expecting to hear. Then he's honest right on back, admitting that going home wouldn't change him being lonely. He doesn't even try to argue that he's not.
It just really worked for me, okay? Plus, he could probably have worked out something with the Doctor that involved him going home, but when he was offered a place on the TARDIS he turned it down for Torchwood and his team.
Oh, question - first kiss after the office scene? I'm thinking yes, and that nothing had happened between them since that conversation. There's been this tension between them that has me leaning this way. And also nothing to contradict it, as far as I know.
- There's also the way they watch each other in this scene. I keep rewatching it for where they look and when they look and what pauses they hold.
- Does it mean anything that the kiss is sandwiched between scenes of Tosh and Tommy? After Ianto's already made the connection between Tommy and Jack? Probably not. I mean, we had that nice parallel of Jack/Ianto with Owen/Gwen in "Cyberwoman" and that was really nothing more than a good way to fit it together, so...
- I really liked Tosh's apartment. I've always wanted things to be nice and tidy, but I have too much crap to make it work. Which only reminds me of Tris and what he likes to say when his mom wants to go shopping and he doesn't. "Oh great, let's get some more crap to go with the other crap we have."
- Gwen and Ianto's relationship. Hints, I think, of how they worked when she was the boss.
Basically, I loved it. But I'm super easy to please and I got Jack and Ianto kissing, so...What's not to like?
I need more or new or different Torchwood icons.
And, boy, it sure pays not to be spoiled.
