SGA - "Travelers"
It just hit me that the lingering sense of familiarity I had with Larrin has to do with the fact that she's basically the less kick-ass version of Vala. And by less kick-ass I mostly mean that she wasn't played by Claudia Black, who still basically owns me.
Yeah. Very Vala-like.
Anyway. I didn't have great expectations for this episode. Which means that I was neither greatly disappointed by it, nor amazingly thrilled. However, there were quite a few things I found myself laughing at and overall I did enjoy it. Probably just won't rewatch it a lot.
Of course, I should have known I'd at least love some of it. I mean, John's still John. And, oh, what a guy.
- "Reed Richards." Haha. Mom paused and looked at me and went, "Who?" and I paused and looked at her and was like, "Oh, man. Fantastic Four. Again." Wonder what Rodney would have to say to John's identification with Mr. Fantastic?
- John lounging in the prison cell, stretched out and slumped down, drumming his fingers with his captors looking on.
- The inertial dampeners! Oh man, I laughed so hard.
- John and the control chair. Being smart and competent. You know he learned what to do with those crystals from Rodney. (I contemplated going more suggestive with this sentence, but then decided against it.)
- I love John's faith in his team. Like last season's "Epiphany." He just believes that they'll always come for him. Unlike Rodney who went through "Grace Under Pressure" with the fear that they wouldn't/couldn't come for him. And Ronon asserting that they would try and get John even if there was lots and lots of Wraith involved. Oh, team.
The team is part of the reason that I suspected I wouldn't care for this episode as much as others. I like the team together. They're good apart, too, but I like their interaction. I don't dislike when they separate John from the team, but I don't like it when they force alien women on him and us. Because so far? There hasn't been a whole lot of chemistry. So this actually worked pretty well for me, because there was more going on than just forced romance.
And, oh, I am such a hypocrite, because if they wanted to put someone else in a romantic situation of the week besides John or Rodney, I would probably be fine with that. McKay/Sheppard started out being something I was going to try not to focus on back in season one, and now...Well. I think it's pretty clear I entered OTP territory with them a while ago. So, yes, I don't like things interfering with the stuff that I would like to see.
But I'm allowed to like certain things in certain ways and not in others. So maybe not a hypocrite. Just...picky. And if it was all done well I would be fine with it.
Anyway, that's kind of a tangent, so back to things.
- Lorne! The bits in the 'jumper reminded me a lot of "The Hive" where Rodney and Lorne had to work together. I liked that Rodney was more subdued than usual because of the seriousness of the situation and the fear that they wouldn't be able to find John.
- Despite what I say above, I wouldn't really mind if Larrin showed up again. There's some potential with the whole Traveler thing. Except, y'know, every now and then she kind of said something with a bit of a twang and sounded a bit like Angie Harmon. That was odd. Plus, she and Sheppard weren't completely lacking in interesting interaction. And, seriously, I'm back to Vala because I was just going to say, "It would be kind of like Daniel and Vala trying to work together." Except without the same chemistry.
Plus, I kind of liked her. She had her interesting moments. And was different from the usual alien women of the week.
- The scene in the mess. Ronon with his fork o' steak. Teyla's rolling eyes. When they used Rodney's little bit about being captured by the sexy alien, I thought I might find the line annoying. But given the context? I found it really funny. Probably helped that the slash-goggles where firmly in place, too. 'Cause, wow, I was getting all kinds of fun subtext there.
Amnesia next week!
Meanwhile, did I mention that I have tickets to see DAVID SEDARIS? TOMORROW. Not that I'm excited or anything. ;D
