It's Just Fashion
Jul. 19th, 2006 09:24 pmI still watch at least a fourth of Project Runway from behind my hands. Sometimes I can't deal with the drama and/or don't want to see the contestants act like complete jackasses.
At first I felt a little conflicted about tonight's dismissal, but the more I think about it, the more I'm glad Malan is gone. I was conflicted because during the course of the episode, he'd shown that he could work in a team and he seemed slightly less icky. People also get points from me when they take responsibility for what they do instead of blaming team members, so when Malan said he'd choose himself to go, he gained a little bit of my respect.
However, I still found him laughable whenever his little interview clips would come up. That man is a complete character. Do you think he created a story for himself (his mother and the designs, among other things) or do you think he was for real?
I do like what Tim says (over at this episode's Tim's Take) about the myth of designers kept for personality being dispelled. Seconds before Tim said Malan's outfit looked like a log, Mom said the same thing. She later mentioned that Tim was a very handsome man and probably smells really good. Then we tried to figure out what he'd smell like. Yes, we're kind of odd.
I'm a little disappointed that so much time was devoted to Vincent and Angela not getting along. (Just now, looking at BravoTV.com, I couldn't remember what Jeffrey and Alison's gown looked like.) The whole thing between them, well, sigh. I think they both handled teamwork poorly. Vincent said that Angela did some work he didn't like, but from what we were shown, he didn't give her a chance to work on anything. He should have handled being team leader better, by delegating and listening to her opinions, instead of pulling the, "I'm team leader and what I say goes." Angela should have realized that ultimately the design was Vincent's and then done what she could to help him create it.
And now Vincent bugs me. I liked him on the Road to the Runway special they did, but he lost some of that when he ass kissed the judges last week about the basket-hat. His smugness this week bothered me.
I didn't really dislike any of the designs this week (except for Malan's - maybe better in another color?), but I did have my favorites. Jeffery and Alison's dress was interesting, but not appropriate for a Miss Universe pageant. Laura and Michael's dress was nice, but I didn't think it was enough for a pageant of that type. I liked that Laura chose Michael to work with because he worked differently than she did and would challenge her, hopefully making the design better. (This is what Vincent and Angela should have done.)
Keith and Bradley had a gorgeous gown. But I am beginning to be a little creeped out by Keith. I don't know what it is about him, but the way he was kind of all over Tara (Miss USA) and was really in her face about her legs and everything, made me uncomfortable for her. I don't not like him. In fact, I'd really like to see more. But there's a tiny part of me that kind of wants to edge away from him when he's on the screen. I don't know.
Uli and Bonnie's and Kayne and Robert's dresses were overall my favorites. I would have liked Uli and Bonnie to win, because I liked their garment better, but Kayne and Robert's dress was more pageant appropriate. Mom and I discussed this, and at the Miss Universe pageant there are going to be some pretty eye-catching gowns, so you wouldn't really want to wear something without some glitz on it.
Anyway. I just finished reading Tim's Take and, as usual, I basically agree with everything he has to say.

Date: 2006-07-20 05:30 pm (UTC)I am going to kind of miss Malan. When is basket hat going to be gone! He drives me nuts! He never gave Angela an opportunity. I kind of like her granola style too. Vincent's dress was weird and gaping at the boobies.

Date: 2006-07-20 07:18 pm (UTC)I felt really awful that last week I wanted Malan gone more than anything and this week I almost completely changed my tune. He seemed to work well with Katherine and wasn't a jerk of any sort. He even said that he'd defend his stuff if they got called on it, and then he did. Which, as I said, gains points with me. People taking responsibility for themselves is admirable.
I really thought I would like Vincent, but he's gotten really annoying really quickly. He was dead-set on not letting Angela do anything. Didn't Miss USA say she didn't want a dress gaping at the boobies?

Date: 2006-07-20 08:06 pm (UTC)I felt the same way about Malan at the end of the episode as you did. I had a lot more respect for him then before and I honestly wanted to kick Angela off but I understand that his design just wasn't appropriate and it was unfinished.
And Keith totally freaked me out when he was pitching his design to Miss USA. But she looked liked she was totally into it. It was totally freaky but for some reason Miss USA looked like she was drawn into it. Like really heavy, intense flirting but in a way that is just creepy. Maybe he was hypnotizing her! You know with all that eye contact and talk about her legs.
