Interesting weekend. Mom was over for the family kiddo birthday party. Always good to see the mom.

The party itself was nice and low-key. Not too many relatives there because several were out of town, so it was a good number of people. Kay made a really yummy casserole and we had brunch. I had two mimosas. Yum.

Favorite quote of the day? "Everybody hates the phone company. Even Bedouins."

The day before, Mom and I saw The DaVinci Code. I enjoyed it. Though I felt it was a little long and a very literally adaptation. I felt that some of the flashbacks could have been placed within the movie better, though I liked how they were done overall. (Maureen's boyfriend, who refuses to read the book, apparently agrees with me.) Was pleasantly surprised that Tom Hanks' skeazy hair didn't bother me the whole movie. Although Audrey Tautou's mole got really distracting the last twenty-or-so minutes. Paul Bettany was wonderful. Ian McKellan was awesome. He stole the show.

Overall, I really liked the very end of the movie. If a movie ends on a good note, I'm usually not too upset with it. And the end, for whatever reason, worked for me.

Although parts of it did get wordy and confusing near the end. And I read the book.

Anyway. I didn't ever think the book was as amazing as everyone seemed to think it was. I enjoyed it. It was fun and interesting, but not any great work of literature. And not that controversial anyway. It's not like the idea is a new one.

During the movie, I mostly kept thinking about The Sparrow. I think I may re-read it this summer. It's one of those books that really got to me and during The DaVinci Code I kept wondering what The Sparrow would be like as a movie. If it could be done well. Whenever I tell people about this book, I always explain it as "Jesuits in Space!" because how can you not laugh at that? But it's actually fairly heavy and certainly hit me emotionally.

I have a feeling that's a crappy paragraph, but I'm too lazy to do anything about it.
