I woke up this morning at 5:40 to the dogs barking and the voices of my mother and a strange woman. We live in the middle of nowhere, it's not usual to have someone show up at your door in the pitch-black of early morning.

Apparently what happened was this: The dogs were barking around 5:30, so Mom got up to let Bebe out, thinking that they were just being weird about coyotes. But as she's closing the door on the dog, this woman calls out to her. No coat, no gloves, no scarf. Just this woman standing in our yard. Mom couldn't really get any information out of her because she didn't speak very much English, but she let her in and tried to figure out what to do.

Meanwhile, I'm wide awake from a shot of omg-what's-happening? adrenaline. I kept thinking, in my paranoid way, that she was there to check us out and then get her partner and rob us blind, or something. Or, and you can laugh but I have to say I wasn't *entirely* awake when I thought this, my first thought was "vampire! and now we've let her in!" I got over that pretty quickly. :) I was *tired*. And I think I was dreaming about John and Rodney and there may have been vampires.

Anyway. The woman was from Warden. Not close by. She wanted Mom to drive her there, but Dad is recovering from surgery and Mom's not going to leave to drive some strange woman to Warden. So she calls the sheriff, who sends out the deputy. Who doesn't speak Spanish. At this point, Mom came in to ask if there was any chance I could translate. I said no. I haven't really thought about Spanish for about six months and any translating I could do would probably just make the situation more confusing instead of less. So the deputy called someone and them talk to the woman and they in turn translated to the deputy.

The story is that the woman was driving with some guy along the ditch-bank. They had an argument, he kicked her out of the car and left her. Somehow they did end up getting ahold of her husband in Warden, who spoke perfect English with no accent. Which all makes us wonder if she could actually speak English better than she let on, if he was her pimp and not her husband (or both), and just what she was doing with this other guy and what they were arguing about. But we'll never know. The deputy decided that he didn't want to wait around to see if someone was going to show up to get her, and so drove her to Warden himself.

So that was my morning. Now Dad and I are watching Pride & Prejudice.

Interesting...and intriquing. You should sell it to 'Unsolved Mysteries'...although, I don't think they make those anymore come to think of it. At least life is back to normal...ish...

Much love for the icon. :)

CRAZY. I would have been way nervous. I feel kind of badly for that lady.

Hurrah for not speaking Spanish so you don't confuse them even more. That was probably the right choice.

I do feel really bad for the lady. I can't imagine just how scared I'd be if I was kicked out of the car on a freezing night in the middle of nowhere.

Like I said, even trying to translate would have just complicated the situation and confused us all. Not a good thing.
