Don't have much to say, except that I saw Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events over the weekend and *loved* it. So very much. I thought they did a wonderful job getting the feel of the books down. When I first heard that they'd be making a movie, I must say I was concerned. The books are pretty short, and that's not to say a movie following one book would be bad, it's just more difficult to make a continually interesting movie with a limited number of pages. So I was happy with the inclusion of the first three books in this movie. It would have drug along, IMO, if they had attempted a couple of hours with the introduction of Count Olaf and his "mysterious" intentions.

Also, I felt that any newcomer to the series would have been just fine sitting in the movie theater.

I love the emotional weight that they, for lack of a better word, added to the story. As a reader, I know that I get so caught up in the wonderful serious levity that is Daniel Handler's storytelling that I forget that these children are orphans. They've got no one but each other. And Mr. Poe, who is unreliable. And Count Olaf, who is nefarious. The "relatives" do not count. They are, obviously, expendable. And the children are admirable, because they are in a seriously depressing, infuriating situation and they just keep going, with barely a complaint.

But yes, when you get past all of the sort of mock-seriousness of the book descriptions, it really is one sad sad story. The movie reminded me of that. In some ways it even made the characters themselves more real and tangible to me.

Bottom line? Gorgeous movie. Loved it loads. Want to see it again. Probably going to buy the score. Going to start reading the series again.
