Supernatural Times Two
Apr. 30th, 2011 12:13 pmSupernatural - "Frontierland" & "Mommy Dearest"
I really enjoyed both of these episodes. I was going to be super angry at "Frontierland" for wasting an episode without getting anything done, but then in the last couple of minutes they fixed that with Samuel Colt's package.
That sounds dirty.
So that made it work for me. My mom really disliked it in the end for this reason, though. She was annoyed that they--Sam and Dean--spent the episode "dicking around" when they knew they had a time limit. And then they were saved by deus ex machina. She's generally pretty annoyed that they've been spending the season dicking around.
I loved the western stuff, though, and that Dean's so into it. I bet he watched reruns of westerns on TV when he was little.
Also, oh, ideas about how it become a fetish...
Speaking of TV, I love that it's become more and more clear that Dean is kind of a giant cultural nerd.
I also liked that the phoenix was human. And Sam with Samuel Colt. Colt in general, really. He seemed like an intelligent, level-headed man.
The real question for me in the episode, though, has to do with Castiel. Was he lying to Bobby to get to Bobby's soul for other purposes? Or did he really need it to heal? Did he need it to heal and also did something else to it? How much can we trust Castiel?
Also, heh, Rachel. I liked that she came in and essentially came off as, like, Castiel comes in hungover in the mornings because he's been drinking to drown his sorrow over the Winchesters and she's tired of seeing her boss and her friend be heartbroken.
And then Cas killed her.
And then "Mommy Dearest" happened. I LOVED IT. I am finally feeling really excited about this season, which is nice. Mom is annoyed that they offed Mother so quickly and easily, and I can see that. Makes her seem pointless and the whole plot anti-climactic. I'm a little impressed with them and their misdirect, but it would have worked better if the pacing of the overall season had been tighter and all of the plots less jumbled. Actually, just better if there had been less plot threads and more focus on Mother.
Oh, look, Crowley is alive. That was less surprising, but I liked how all the pieces started to fall into place when you realize, well, if Cas killed him and Crowley is alive then that means...Cas must have been in on it. Which just, omg, makes me excited for the rest of the season. Because what have Cas' other motives been? Did he not want Sam re-souled for reasons we haven't discovered yet? Did Crowley approach him or did he approach Crowley? (I imagined he approached Crowley...)
How did (does?) Grandpa Campbell play in to this?
I liked the fanservice. I have fic-type ideas. I think I might use that to explore things about Dean and Cas and Cas' upset face when Dean teases him about being powerless. Castiel does not like being powerless.
Dean and Sam are dumb around children. I really liked the parallels between Dean wanting to save these two lost boys above the greater good and Cas wanting to save Sam and Dean above his greater good. (If that in fact turns out to be the greater good.)
I loved that Cas offed Lenore (what the hell was that acting, Amber Benson?) and then took over with the torture. That first scene I was just waiting for him to step in because 1) she asked and 2) they were taking too long. (Plus, Dean's brief "what the hell?" hands.) I wonder if Cas gets annoyed with some of their pussyfooting around. I mean, I'm sure he does. But they are dealing with monsters and a time limit and he wants answers.
I want a season of Dean picking locks and Cas being like, "....is this going to take long?" Which, as I was telling
spacefragments, makes me think of Steve and Danny from Hawaii Five-0. Dean fails at picking the lock in a timely fashion, Cas kicks the door down.
Anyway. I feel like I should have more to say. Or something else to say....
Jefferson Starships will always be hilarious.

Date: 2011-05-07 07:59 am (UTC)I hadn't really thought of it in those terms before. And, honestly, I don't really know. It could go either way right now. Though it'll take a lot to convince me Cas is actually "dark."

Date: 2011-04-30 08:43 pm (UTC)I agree with your Mom. The whole thing seemed rather anticlimactic but I guess because the real reason was Castiel himself and his working with Crowley!

Not to mention does this mean that the boys were REALLY working for Castiel in secret? Talk about plot twists!

That was mean of Dean! Poor Cas!
Dean and Sam are dumb around children. I really liked the parallels between Dean wanting to save these two lost boys above the greater good and Cas wanting to save Sam and Dean above his greater good. (If that in fact turns out to be the greater good.)
Yes. Castiel has no problems with the bigger picture UNLESS it involves Dean and Sam. LOve it!

LOL! I just love the fact that Cas has no patience at all! Maybe it's because he's a soldier and has to make quick decisions on the battlefield at a moment's notice.
And now I totally want a H5-O fusion with Dean and Castiel!

Date: 2011-05-07 08:19 am (UTC)I think it's partly that, and partly that he's able to do things so quickly himself. Need to be somewhere? Blink and it's done. Need someone dead? Blink and it's done. The Winchesters bind him to a slower path. Can't blame the guy for getting a little impatient.
A H50 fusion would be fantastic!

Oh how the writers tease us so...

Date: 2011-05-07 08:25 am (UTC)Yes! A friend of mine suggested they should do webisodes of Dean and Cas investigating and Cas learning about human stuff with Dean and Sam. It'd be awesome.
My mom seriously lost it at the ass line.
