Supernatural
Oct. 25th, 2010 07:59 pmI was on a roadtrip this past weekend so I wasn't sure I'd get to watch this. Especially since we were going out to dinner with long unseen family members. But we were back at our hotel early and
sdrohc_ratiug and I hunkered down and enjoyed ourselves.
I'll post roadtrip pics later.
I feel like this is kind of a half-assed reaction post. ::shrug:: I've had a very long day.
Supernatural - "Live Free or Twihard"
- Generally hiLARious, especially the beginning. In fact, the only thing that did not work for me in this episode was the vision Dean had. It felt like they were trying too hard, I thought.
The man in it looked familiar, but I can't remember from where.
- And when I say "the only thing that did not work for me," I'm not thinking about the things that have been point out since then.
Like the reaction to the gay kiss in the bar. I'd have to see it again. I just thought they were disappointed they had the wrong mark.
- Dean not playing for his team. I'm maintaining he just meant that guy wasn't his type. I can pretend whatever I want.
If we're not pretending that, though, then there is an element of "Dean doth protest to much."
perfumaniac and I discussed this a bit, particularly the discrepancies between s1-s3!Dean who was generally "whatever" about being seen as gay and the Dean we see now.
I've got several ideas on this that I need to ponder some more.
- LOL. Old man Dean.
- Sam and Grandpa Skinner: in cahoots? working for similar purposes? working at cross purposes?
- I've been thinking about connections between capturing the djinn, taking the shapeshifter baby, and allowing Dean to be turned. Dean's played a big part in these. A big, bait-like part.
- I wasn't shocked by Sam's behavior. I mean, there was definite "WTF?" but that didn't so much have to do with Sam letting Dean get walloped and more to do with, I don't know, them letting us see that Sam purposefully didn't interfere? We already knew something was up with Sam; the shock was more that they were going that far this soon. Does that make sense?
- What is up with Sam? I remain unspoiled for the season. Except for that 6.06 clip.
I hope that he's not just, y'know, evil. Plain old evil is boring.
I don't really have any theories of my own, though.
- Vampire!Dean. I have ridiculous fic ideas.
How hot was he with the creepy and the blood and the ass-kicking? Nnnnngh. (I want Dean and Leon to be kicking ass and taking names together, and then making out against a wall, weapons still in hand.)
- I would like the Lisa thing to be over. Not in a "I am tired of this" way, just in a...clearly Dean is unstable and has issues and maybe this just isn't going to work kind of way. Also, he pushed Ben.
I really don't want either Lisa or Ben to be hurt. They don't deserve that.
- I know some people are really disappointed with how this season is going, but I think it's really interesting. It's early days yet, being only five episodes in, but I feel like they're setting up pieces on the board for something big.
I hope I'm right.

Date: 2010-10-26 02:26 pm (UTC)I have two theories: either he sold his soul or there is an angel (my money's on Michael) inside of him.
'I really don't want either Lisa or Ben to be hurt. They don't deserve that.'
This!

Date: 2010-10-27 01:23 am (UTC)As for Dean saying he didn't play for his team, yeah he was totally talking about the fact that the guy wasn't his type. >.> totally jeez <.< (And was I the only one expecting Cas to come in and be clearly unamused by Dean's being a vampire?)
As for the vision scene, it actually had some LOTR undertones, like with the eye(what's his name) and Frodo's visions, etc.
Sam, I thought of Lucifer, that look he gave when Dean was being forced to drink that guys blood gave me a huge deja-vu. As for being in cahoots with Samuel, not so sure....especially after Samuel's reaction to what Sam had done/not done.
And Dean as bait!? I know right! I keep waiting for him to kick some ass, I mean, yeah sure he's rusty, but he's always been the alpha-male one in the group and now he's just...lagging behind. It's driving me crazy, he decapitated the last vampire we met with a chainsaw thing and now he's getting his ass handed to him.
I especially enjoyed Dean's comments to Sam when he was a vampire. XD
As for Lisa and Ben, I agree with you, I enjoyed it for the last couple of episodes if I ignored the complete lack of backstory/character growth but....it's just not working anymore.
And you're tempting everyone with your 'ridiculous' fic ideas T_T
I think that's it...Happy Belated Birthday!!! You have an awesome birthday date, many people got married on that day also plus it's supposed to be lucky. I hope you've been lucky. :P
You're resident evil fics/drabbles make me want to play it...but I have hmwk!!! XS
Kay I'm off now.

Date: 2010-10-27 06:24 pm (UTC)And I'd rather them part like this than draw it out and potentially give Dean more to angst over. I'm sure he'll have plenty of angst about the way he behaved around them here in this episode anyway.

Date: 2010-10-27 09:54 pm (UTC)But if that's the case, what's the end game?
I kind of love that at this point, it's really all speculation. :)

Date: 2010-10-28 05:43 pm (UTC)Maybe like Raphael, Michael wants to restart the Apocalypse and this time he's going to make sure Dean says yes by saying that if he doesn't Michael will stay inside Sam forever.
'I kind of love that at this point, it's really all speculation. :)'
Me too! It will be interesting to see what happens.

Date: 2010-10-28 06:18 pm (UTC)Tell me about. It seems like Sam and Dean never really move past their brotherly angst and I would hate if they just keep telling the same stories with Lisa and Ben too.

Date: 2010-10-30 01:29 am (UTC)Ha, yes! It also had some Shining undertones, what with the creepy twin girls.
...especially after Samuel's reaction to what Sam had done/not done.
Yeah, that was the part that threw me. Before that, you could kind of see them working toward some end, with Sam distracting Dean while they do...well...whatever Dean might not be onboard with. But his reaction to Sam implied that they're not.
As for Dean...this vampire situation was a lot different. And a lot has happened between then and now; he's not quite the same person he used to be. Plus, wasn't he kinda caught off-guard? He just expected the guy to be a douche, not an actual vampire.
I'm sure he'll improve as the season continues.
As for Lisa and Ben, I agree with you, I enjoyed it for the last couple of episodes if I ignored the complete lack of backstory/character growth but....it's just not working anymore.
Absolutely. And I do say that as someone who genuinely likes Lisa and Ben. But they weren't re-introduced as characters in and of themselves, they were brought back in to serve a plot point for Dean. Which isn't fair (to the characters or the audience) and just doesn't work, I think.
I'm attempting the ridiculous fic ideas, so we'll see. ;D
Oh man, Resident Evil has eaten my brain (heh, zombies). But, oh, I'm enjoying it soooo much.
Thank you for the birthday wishes!

Date: 2010-11-02 04:32 am (UTC)I hope they call back to the season two episode where Yellow Eyes (I think) said that Sam might not be 100% Sam after coming back from the dead.
Ooh. They may have dropped it as a "this could happen, but it might not." But now Sam's been brought back, not from death but from something similar...
I always did like that idea that bringing someone back had a catch, that you weren't necessarily going to get what you expected or who you wanted.
I'm really hoping all of the plot threads come together as the season progresses.

Good point. Someone mentioned on other message board that Sam got what Dean wanted in season four (ie not to feel) and I think that could play into this season's theme of getting what you want but it not really being what you want. Cas got to go back to Heaven but he's miserable, Crowley is miserable as the King of Hell and Dean seemed miserable in his normal life.
'I'm really hoping all of the plot threads come together as the season progresses.'
Same here.

Date: 2010-11-05 08:40 am (UTC)Ooooooh. I have nothing to add except that I hadn't thought of that connection, or about how Crowley being miserable as the King of Hell played in with that theme.
Oh, things to think about!

Date: 2010-11-05 02:49 pm (UTC)Oh, things to think about!'
Excellent! When I heard that Dean was getting a normal life and Cas was going back to Heaven in season six I really hoped that it would be like the ending of Neverwhere where they get what the think they want but it's not really what they want (at least not entirely). I'm so glad they threw Crowley into the mix too.

Date: 2010-11-10 06:34 am (UTC)That's exactly what I've been hoping for (and wanting to write fic about) since season five ended.

Date: 2010-11-10 03:10 pm (UTC)Me too. It makes sense that the show writers would go there because that is a very popular theme.
