Things on my mind after the premiere. Spoilers, obviously.
Supernatural - "Exile on Main St."
My mom and I both enjoyed it.
My only issue, which she and I discussed briefly, was Lisa taking Dean in so readily.
Well, okay, I had several issues related to that and their conversation on the stairs at Bobby's.
But until they tell me otherwise, I'm going to run with the idea that those first few months with Dean? He and Lisa were only cohabitating. I will fairly happily believe that she was willing to give him a safe place to stay and things eventually evolved to them being a couple from there.
Maybe this is a dumb way for me to go about things, but whatever. It works for me. I've got friends who have known their spouses for less time than Dean's lived with Lisa.
The only thing that puts a damper in this is how the neighborhood sees the relationship. ::shrug::
Anyway, so there's that.
My other issues were, I dunno, what she said about him saving the world and giving him some leeway because of it. As long as that leeway doesn't include, "Oh, you saved us! Here is a nice warm spot in my bed."
Also, best year of her life? Really?
Yeah, okay, the whole Lisa was great without Dean until Dean showed up thing bugs me. A lot.
But, uh, yeah, it was a whole year. We don't know how fast things progressed. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt because it will drive me less crazy.
The Campbells are...well. Not particularly likable. My mom pointed out that just because Grandpa Campbell says he's Grandpa Campbell? Doesn't mean he really is. Something hinky is going on there.
Y'know, I think that's what I liked about this episode. It moved us away from the events of last season and opened the door for something new but recognizable. Things weren't completely forgotten. I even thought Cas was mentioned plenty.
And Dean and Sam, Dean and Sam....
I liked the montage at the beginning because it didn't read as happy. (I also felt the music used was telling.) It read as Dean making due. Which was held up by his reaction to Sam coming back and (finally) making himself known. He's there because Sam told him to be. Because that's what Sam wanted him to do. It has nothing to do with Lisa or Ben; it all comes back to Sam.
This second time, staying with them instead of going with Sam, it's Dean's sense of responsibility keeping him there. His desire to protect. Like it or not, Dean cares about them to some extent. And we've seen him protect people he barely knows.
Well, and also the fact that Sam is a lying liar. I mean, COME ON. I wanted Dean to pull the "You don't get to make that decision for me" card. Y'know, the one that the romantic interests of heros get to play? Or should, anyway.
I kinda wanted Dean to punch Sam in the face instead of hugging him.
Mom said she was really uncomfortable during the final scene. I said that was the point. They're off balance, and we should feel it.
Also, Sam is...off. Something is up. Oh, going with Mom's Grandpa Campbell comment, is it really Sam?
Jensen killed me right before the credits rolled. I mean...you just know Dean's throat feels too tight and his chest feels constricted and he wants so badly to do something, something other than what he's doing, but he doesn't feel like he can.
He's always trying to do things for other people, and the things he has for himself are never completely his.
The more people in your life, the more complicated it gets.
Basically, I think it's a decent start to the season. There was nothing I found super objectionable or worrisome. I was reminded a bit of last season when Dean and Sam went their separate ways and how freaked out fandom got. That lasted, what? Two episodes? Anything happening now, I'm good sitting through to see where they'll take it.
Meanwhile, the absolute BEST comment of the night was when Sam appeared out of nowhere for the first time with the antidote.
MOM: Did he just shoot him full of come?
ME: ::double-take:: What?
MOM: ::mumble:: Glue? Did he shoot him full of glue?
ME: THAT IS NOT WHAT YOU SAID.
MOM: What do you think I said?
ME: NOT THAT.
MOM: Did he shoot him full of kumquat?
ME: Closer. Just the first part?
MOM: ::nods::
It was amazing.
And awful.
I love her.
PLEASE keep in mind that I am UNSPOILED for season six. I would like to remain that way.
