Supernatural - "My Bloody Valentine"

So there was a day last summer where [livejournal.com profile] olivelavonne, my mom, and I marathoned Friday the 13th and My Bloody Valentine. Oh, Jensen. You did your best, man, but that was ridiculous.

Anyway. I enjoyed this episode A LOT.

- Y'know, I remember the first time SPN made me go "OMG they're not gonna show that, are they?!" This episode was a reminder that yes, they absolutely are going to show that. EW.

- Dude, Sam, way to be unobservant. Dean isn't trolling bars for lonely singles on Valentine's because HE AND CAS ARE A COUPLE, DUH. You are clearly blocking out that one morning you woke up to find Cas still in Dean's bed.

What? ::shifty:: That totally happened.

- CUPID. Or, actually, let's just go with CASTIEL since I pretty much got ridiculous as soon as he showed up. ON THE PHONE. "I'm going to hang up now." Oh, bless their awkward-non-existent-personal-space socks. <3

- BUT CUPID. D'AW.

Why did he looks so familiar? ... Southland!

- I...kinda don't know how I feel about all of this meddling that it turns out Heaven's been doing. I mean, I'm not going to argue with or about it, because that achieves approximately zip, but I don't know how I feel about it.

- Famine is creeeepy.

- Okay, so seeing Castiel eat and seeing Dean and Sam's reaction to it was great, but all I could think most of the time was how poor Misha had to deal with food as a prop and get his lines out around the food.

- I asked this once at the beginning of season five, whether or not Jimmy was still alive. I still lean toward him being dead. Being blown to smithereens by an archangel is tough. And why would whatever/whoever brought Castiel back, bring Jimmy back, too? Only to, it could be guessed, suffer more? Since we've already heard it's not exactly cake and ice cream being used as a vessel.

I don't really think anything said tonight actually negated any of this.

- Thank you, Sam! Finally admitting you're not okay! I hate that they keep doing that, "I'm okay. Are you okay? You're okay? Me, too" act. Nobody buys it, boys!

- Loved Cas' very easy one-handed shove of the armoire to block the door. I might have to go work on that "Castiel manhandles Dean and Dean likes it" fic now...

- They're going to need to let Cas' pants out after this. Dean should help him with the belt. ;)

- I love it when Sam kicks ass, even if it means horrible backsliding.

- Is Dean dead inside? I don't know. I don't want to believe he is, but what does that even mean?

I just keep going back to how everyone seems to be pushing him down, telling him that he'll say yes because that is his destiny, telling him that he's important only so far as he's Michael's vessel, telling him that he's not affected because he's dead inside. It's like...convincing him that whatever's inside of him is worthless, so he might as well say yes because what the hell else is he doing anyway? Just taking up space and prolonging the inevitable.

- The end. DEAN. OH, DEAN. He just wants someone to give him a little guidance, tell him what to do. Someone who has answers and isn't biased. I'm not sure he would say yes to Michael at this point, but I think he would maybe like someone to take the burden and make the decision for him. And deal with the consequences.

It reminded me a little of that scene in "Abandon All Hope" where Dean's on the radio with Bobby after Jo's been hurt. He's on the verge of breaking down, but Bobby essentially gets him to buck up and take control. I think people have been telling Dean to do that all his life. And after all of that, and all of the recent "You're life sucks, give in", Dean's just seriously fucking tired.

Damn. Now I think I need a drink.

I seriously loved this episode. One of the grossest EVER, but those last couple minutes were among the most heart-wrenching. Oh, Dean. *hugs*

I'm really happy they're addressing Sam's issues, beyond simply him admitting to feeling angry.

CAS! So precious with his personal space issues. Though, gross as his eating-meat-directly-out-of-pan scene was, I kinda really want a burger now.

I feel like this episode lures you in with a false sense of dark humor, and then totally blindsides you with EPIC ANGST.

I know I have more to say, but I should probably head to sleep.

Oh, yeah, there was total handwavey-fail over Sam's issues at the beginning of the season. They need to deal with this crap. We haven't even really been seeing symptoms of withdrawal, have we?

Cas made me want a burger, too. Oh! I also really liked that scene where Dean and Cas were waiting to follow the soul and Cas was just so happy over his burger. And Dean was all WTF? Hee!

I feel like this episode lures you in with a false sense of dark humor, and then totally blindsides you with EPIC ANGST.

That's TOTALLY what happened. They're all, "Look! Shiny! Cupid! Over here!" and then they come up behind you and smack you with the angst when you're least expecting it.

When Dean looked heavenward, I totally thought he was going to say "Yes" and then the episode would end and it'd be all SURPRISE HIATUS TIME!!!

This episode made me crack up.

I totally want a cupid!hug now.

THEY ARE SUCH HORRIBLE TEASES WITH THEIR SURPRISE HIATUS!!

Maybe they'll come back in March and Dean will have said yes and the only way we'll know is Cas will take one look at him and go all crazy, "What have you done with Dean?!" I don't know. On the one hand, I want things to happen! Finally! On the other hand, I really don't want Dean to say yes.

A cupid!hug would be the best. I could totally use one.

This episode left me scattered all over the place, emotionally. There was such cuteness with the guys - Sam's concern over Dean not trolling for ladies, Cupid, that cellphone scene with Castiel - but they're all so wrecked by the end. I was honestly holding my breath whether Dean was going to start saying the beginning of a "yes".

I totally agree with you on Dean's current outlook, too. He's just completely weary, in body and spirit, in a way we haven't seen since "Head of a Pin". The ending of both episodes left me gutted.

Loved Cas' very easy one-handed shove of the armoire to block the door.

Not gonna lie, that got me a little hot. We seldom see much of casually BAMF!Castiel, and it's always awesome. He was just utterly adorable in this.

Like I was saying to [livejournal.com profile] ember_firedrake above, it's like they distract you with the fun, shiny, happy stuff and then sneak up behind you to clobber you with the angst. I guess by now with SPN we should know better than to leave our backs exposed like that? Because, yeah, emotional rollercoaster.

Maybe that was the beginning of a "yes." I really, really hope it's not. I hate to see Dean so broken. (Also, that scene at the end of "Head of a Pin" kills me every time I see it. Oh, Dean.)

We seldom see much of casually BAMF!Castiel, and it's always awesome.

Yeees. There needs to be more of that! And last night's episode was such a good combination of BAMF and adorable. I love it.

Maybe angels need their vessels to have a soul in order to use them? If not, what would be the point of needing them to say yes? Just kill the guy and use the corpse. Wich sounded completely wrong and I'll shut up now.

But yeah, if he's still there?? Poor Jimmy.

Hmmmm. No, I think you have a really good point there. Because, yeah, why go through the trouble of getting permission if they can just kill them and then reinhabit. (Does the same go for demons? I know they don't need permission, but they've always possessed a living person, haven't they?)

But I'm also willing to go with the idea that Castiel is a special case. How many other angels have been blown to bits while in possession of a vessel and then been brought back?

I just feel bad about Jimmy being stuck in there. (Though I don't really have any issues with the fic aspect of that.) But we know from "The Rapture" that it's not exactly comfortable, and I can't help thinking that maybe he would have gotten rewarded by being removed. Or something.

Alternately, maybe Jimmy is really still in there and at the end of the season, he'll be rewarded with a family reunion. Which opens whole other doors regarding Castiel's future.

Didn't Ruby possess the body of a recently dead girl?? You know, when she went from blond to spunky brunette? That's why I think their kind of possession is entirely differet from angel's vessels. Not to mention less restricted about who works for them and who doesn't.

Alternatly (as I just watched this ep again) maybe Cas didn't mean Jimmy's hunger as Jimmy's still here, but more like Jimmy's body wants protein, and he's now so stuck in his human flesh he can feel it too.

Then again, Famine said "hunger comes from the soul", and we still have no idea if angel's souls are anything like human's, so maybe he DID mean Jimmy's soul there... I dunno, I'm going back and forth about this one.

I think she was in a coma and close to death, so her body was alive but her soul had left the building. I don't think they can possess people already dead.

I keep thinking about Castiel being resurrected and taking Jimmy's form because it was convenient. (Or like Anna, who got to keep her human body when she became re-graced because she was fond of it.) So, yeah, I feel like it's still up to interpretation whether or not Jimmy's in there. Because, like you say, it could just be Cas reading Jimmy's body. Or Cas feeling things with his vessel and attributing them to Jimmy since they're new to him.
