Mastering idioms is difficult.
Inspired by a very nice lady who is a friend of my cousin. She's not a native English speaker and said this once in conversation. It's a phrase that continues to amuse me.
"That man is a piece of eye food.”
Dean spits his drink across the table as Sam almost chokes on his beer. Castiel is glad he’s sitting beside Dean and not in the empty seat directly across from him.
“What?” Castiel asks. They're both staring at him, eyes wide and round. As Sam coughs, trying to catch his breath, Dean wipes the beer off his chin with the back of his hand. Castiel idly wonders if it tastes any better on Dean's skin than it does from the glass.
"Eye food?" Dean sounds a little choked.
"Yes."
His brow furrows. "What—?"
"Dude,” Sam says, leaning across the table. “I think he means eye candy."
Castiel turns to Sam, nodding. “Yes, that’s it. I am still struggling with the intricacies of English idioms.”
“Understandable,” Sam says, sitting back. “It’s a complicated language.”
“And constantly changing. It will be a challenge to adapt.” Dean and Sam have both been helpful as he becomes acclimated to the human condition.
“You could’ve just said he was hot,” Dean interjects, mopping up the excess beer on the table. There’s a frown on his face. Castiel has noticed it before, particularly when he interacts with or expresses interest in anyone other than Dean. The more time he spends on Earth with the Winchesters, the more he thinks he’s beginning to understand what’s behind that frown.
He decides to, as Dean would say, “go with his gut.”
“Don’t worry, Dean,” Castiel says, stilling Dean’s hand with his own. Dean freezes against him as he takes the napkin and continues soaking up the mess himself. “You are much hotter.”
Sam chokes on his beer again. Out of the corner of his eye, Castiel sees Dean blush. He may find out what Dean’s skin tastes like after all.

Date: 2009-11-03 03:55 pm (UTC)Dean is absolutely eye food. And I will use this phrase in random conversations from now on just because I want to see the looks on everyone's faces.

Date: 2010-02-08 12:45 am (UTC)Me, too! Castiel may have been around FOREVER, but English is hard and there are so many bits of slang and changing meanings. I'm amazed he doesn't make more awkward mistakes.
Thank you so much!
