Pre-movie Dan. At least things eventually get better for him.

Dan loves Val, he does, but he doesn’t know how to love her. Can’t figure out how to give her more, how to give her the type of normal husband-wife relationship he’s sure she wants and isn’t getting from him.

He thought moving to Wilby would help; give them a new start, a clean slate. Remove the distractions of city life. Remove temptation and all of those stray “what if?” thoughts.

But it’s Wilby that breaks them. He helps it along, a strange mix of accident and purpose.

By the time Val leaves, Dan’s not sure he can be fixed.
