SGA - "Vegas"
My thoughts may not be completely coherent.
Oh my God. I want a series based on this show so badly. I wanted one ten minutes in. There doesn't even have to be a Stargate connection. I just want more of Detective John Sheppard being rumpled and gruff and a loner. Who, through some mystery, meets Dr. Rodney McKay. Like CSI and The X-Files and SGA all mixed together.
This was just incredible. I'm not sure I can even express how much this worked for me.
And, okay, so the plot wasn't necessarily the most fleshed-out outside of the general AU idea, but I liked that this felt like a beginning. I liked that it was just a tiny glimpse into another universe. Well, besides the fact that I want more of the universe. I enjoyed the episode for giving me that glimpse.
How sad is it that one of the best episodes (for me anyway) of the whole season is 1) an AU and 2) the second to last episode of the series? And just this morning I was thinking about how I was feeling pretty ready for the show to be over. Now, though, I've been reminded of just how much I love the characters. And I do love them, so very much.
I loved the scene where Rodney recites John's history to him. Wow. That was hot, okay? It just was. ("I also like spearmint gum." "Have some." "I was joking." "No you weren't." The way he says it. Guh. Also the "I know everything about you.") No matter what universe, those two have a connection. The rhythm of the scene was fantastic, how Rodney came in all aggressive and then toned it down as he was leaving.
It makes me wonder about what may have happened with that other Sheppard he met. Clearly he made an impression. But, hand-in-hand with that automatic connection the two of them seem to share, I can't help but think they'll always make an impression on each other wherever and whoever they are.
Plus, the scene where John leaves. Basically all of the scenes with the two of them were fantastic. But the whole bit with, "Things don't always go the way we plan." And then, "I don't think there's much difference between you and the other John Sheppard I met...Still, I like to believe you have the same strength of character. That's why I told you the truth."
There's just something there between them. Whatever it may be.
Also, when Rodney lost contact with John on the phone? His worried face! Very much like the worry we've seen our Rodney express whenever John does something stupid and brave and suicidal.
Rodney was also ridiculously hot and smug. (Smugly hot? Hotly smug?) I love him in a suit.
And speaking of costuming, I want to know about Rodney's wedding ring. I first noticed it in the promo pics that were released a while ago. Are he and Keller married? There very brief interaction in the hall didn't really come off that way to me.
Beyond that, what's this Rodney's story? How'd he get there? He's a little more...subdued? At least with John. What's his Atlantis like? Who's taken John's place, since in the universe we're familiar with, John has been such a key player? Who woke up the Wraith?
The Wraith was fantastic and creepy. And Todd even had an appearance.
I also really liked the way the episode looked, and the slow fade to white at the very beginning leaving John's silhouette behind.
I'm going to believe that they saved John out there in the desert. They found him and saved him and things will go from there.
Fanfiction. I need fanfiction.
