Because it's the end of the year and I've been thinking about writing a lot, I thought I'd actually post my thoughts, go back and re-think a few things. What better way than a meme?

It may not be a lot for other people, but there are a few things I'm proud of. Especially the fact that I branched out more than I was expecting. I went from toying with just SGA, to toying with Due South, High School Musical, NCIS, Torchwood, Wilby Wonderful, and Without a Trace. For me, this was very exciting.

I'm very bad at answering these questions with just one fic.

My best story(ies) of this year: Good question. I'm really proud of Sunk and Any Other Name. As well as Tomorrow. Also the Torchwood drabble.

My favourite story of this year: I'm leaning toward the porn on this one, Any Other Name. I love it because it's Tim and Tony and it ::cough:: came together so easily for me. Especially for being my first attempt at something higher than PG-13. Like laughing at my own jokes, every now and then I'll go back and re-read it and go, "hee!" and remind myself that writing is fun and I can do it.

Story most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion: I can't really say they are underappreciated, since it's not like I advertise them really and the majority of my flist is into other things, be that other fandoms or things besides fanfiction.

Most fun story to write: Corona. [livejournal.com profile] ginnith was prompting me and mentioned Corona in passing and suddenly this was just there. It's very short, but I can see it very clearly in my head, the colors and textures and Tim and Tony.

Sexiest story: Let's not even try to be subtle and go with the porn battle fic. Also, Corona. Oh, and the NCIS turtleneck drabble.

Story with the single sexiest moment: Any Other Name. and possibly i like the thrill. I have a thing for people shoved against vertical surfaces. ::shrug::

Most "Holy crap, that's wrong, even for you" story: The story that will never be written, because though Fraser would make an adorable Muppet Mountie, I could never pull it off. Alternately, the other story that will never be written that is a crossover between High School Musical, Torchwood, Without a Trace, SGA/SG-1, and NCIS. Scary as it sounds, it makes so much sense in my head. Troy Bolton goes missing! Danny and Martin go to New Mexico to investigate! They end up in Roswell where the SGC has got stuff going on! Aliens are involved! Torchwood gets pulled in! And...I'm not sure how exactly I can fit NCIS in there, but I'd figure it out somehow. My mother and I have actually discussed this.

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters: Sunk, the Torchwood drabble. Not necessarily that they shifted my own perceptions, but they helped me to get a better grip on the characters themselves. They're both fandoms where I never really thought I'd attempt any fanfiction because I wasn't sure I could get a handle on the characters. Apparently, though, this was a lie. And while I don't have any new Torchwood related ideas, I do have several DS related things floating around.

Hardest story to write: Hats Off, because I couldn't figure out how it should be begin and get the needed information in there. Any Other Name, because it was out of my writing comfort zone.

Biggest Disappointment: There are two or three drabbles that I'm not satisfied with and could definitely be better.

Biggest Surprise: Sunk, I think. I was worried it wouldn't work out, that I'd never iron out certain issues that I was having with it. But in the end, things fell into place. Plus, my God, it was over 100 words!

Most Unintentionally Telling Story: I...don't know. Aren't they all telling, in a way? Which is why I still have doubts over sharing and posting things, because it's an admission of what I think about and what I find interesting. Even things that are prompted get written because I found something in the prompt that spoke to me.

I also think certain things are more telling when taken as a whole. For example, it didn't happen so much this year, but if I go back through more of my SGA fic, it's fairly clear that I like to stick John and Rodney in bed and make them cuddle. I like it when they're sleepy and safe and warm. Or have them in bed and wake up and ponder things. Hey, it's the same thing in the Wilby Wonderful drabble. And in the Due South fic I'm planning now, the reconciliation-type event in the story takes place in bed. What this reveals about me, I don't know. Except that I do like to laze around in bed or on beds. And I do a fair amount of thinking there after I wake up but before I get up.

Plus, I want to take care of these characters. I'm more into the comfort aspect of hurt/comfort. Most of the characters I'm interested in have dangerous jobs, and they're the ones I tend to want to write into bed. Except for Dan and Duck or Chad and Ryan. But Dan's been through some unfortunate circumstances. Now that I'm thinking about it, I have not yet had the desire to write Chad and Ryan in bed and safe. Because they don't need it.
And then there's my tendency to write characters shoving each other against vertical surfaces and getting it on.

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted? I don't know if it's more or less, but it's certainly more varied. Last year I was basically only writing SGA. My writing notebook was mostly filled with John and Rodney. This year there's been John and Rodney, McGee and DiNozzo, Danny and Martin, Ianto (and Jack), Ryan and Chad, Fraser and Ray, Duck and Dan, Scripps and Posner. It's weird! And wonderful! (Though sometimes I worry about what it means for John and Rodney. Oh, SGA. I will always have the first four seasons. And season five to bend to my will.)

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January 2008? Oh, all of them basically. I would never have guessed that I'd get into so many different things this year and be inspired by the majority of them. As carry over from previous years, I'd say Torchwood though. I really never thought I'd attempt anything there, but then "Fragments" happened and I had to try. Of the shows I got into in 2008, the most surprising fic result would probably be Chad and Ryan. Because High School Musical, really? But, oh, it is my guilty, guilty pleasure. They sing and dance! And Ryan is so delightfully gay.

Did you take any writing risks this year? (See above for unexpected pairings, etc. What did you learn from them?) Really only in taking a more "active" role in fanfic promoting. For the rest of the world, posting on a community that you've written fic is not that big of a deal. For me, there are still moments of, "omg what do you think you're doing? Who do you think you're fooling?" So I guess you could say those were risks I took. As well as participating in the last porn battle. Which was so much fun! The participating and the porn being the risk.

And those risks I took? All paid off in the end. So this next year, I'm going to try to do more of that. Put myself out there.

Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year? omg, so many! At the moment I have about five different things I'd like to write. Also, see the last question. Put myself out there more. Or try, anyway.

I'd like to thank the academy...(Thanks to your betas, frequent commenters/supporters, the people who stayed up with you late on IM...) I'd never get anything done if it weren't for the help and support (and enabling) of [livejournal.com profile] ginnith and [livejournal.com profile] trademybike. They are the best, putting up with my insecurities and answering my rambling e-mails. Especially when sometimes the e-mails they get are about things they've never seen. And one of them isn't even into fanfiction. It means a lot to me.
