SGA - "Tracker"
Eh. I liked it. Better than I was expecting.
- Oh, John. What are we going to do with you?
If John and Rodney were anyone else on TV - if they were, for example, Jack and Sam on SG-1 - that first would have been meant to show us that John's upset about Rodney going into the field on his day off without John to play with Keller. If either character were a woman, really, (especially John), that's how that would read. John jealous and flouncing off.
Perhaps he's jealous of Keller because he's losing Rodney's friendship. Rodney's the one he spends his free time with, playing games, watching movies, grabbing a bite to eat. Beer on the pier. He did try to keep Rodney from meeting up with Katie by distracting him with golf. But that only makes me wonder if that particular distraction was because he a) saw what Rodney didn't and knew Katie was the wrong woman for him, b) doesn't want Rodney to get involved romantically because then what's he supposed to do, or c) doesn't want Rodney to get involved romantically because he's been pining for him.
Why is (c) the only option that makes any real sense to me? Well, besides knowing how very wrong Katie was for him. Here he even knows that in some alternate future, Rodney and Jennifer did become something more than friends. So shouldn't he be expecting this on some level? Wanting Rodney to be happy, shouldn't he maybe even push for it? But future Rodney/Jennifer weirded him out and he's clearly not comfortable with this version of it either. So what does that mean?
I can only read it as John being interested in Rodney himself. I feel like he's found a lot of things on Atlantis that he never thought he'd find, that he never realized he could have - family-wise anyway - and recently he's realized that he wants things. And now there's the possibility of those things being taken away. Like the events of "The Last Man" woke something up and John's been trying to figure out how to pursue it and he can't quite get it and now Rodney's off memorizing medical jargon to impress Keller with and John doesn't know what to do anymore.
Phew. Long sentence.
Especially since Rodney kept calling for John in "The Shrine." Not Jeannie. Not his parents. Not Elizabeth or Carson or Teyla or Ronon or Sam. Not Jennifer. John.
I think John's quietly freaking out in the back of his mind, trying to figure out what to do and whether or not he should do anything.
- Interesting that Rodney was primping for his day with Keller and stopped as soon as John showed up. Because that's totally teasing fodder. But add that to the way John's face is all serious and a little hurt as he leaves, the way Rodney looks guilty, and the way the music pops up all sad-like and Rodney immediately pretending he wasn't primping suddenly looks like he doesn't want to be caught doing something he shouldn't. He doesn't want to be seen doing that because he knows John will be upset by it.
Seriously, I don't know how to read the scene so that it's not something incredibly awkward going on between the two of them. Like Rodney has bought his ticket for the clue bus, but he hasn't actually gotten on yet.
- I like Rodney and Ronon together. I wish, though, that they had made different decisions about Jason Mamoa's hair this season. Let him have his shorter hair!
- The runner guy was great. He did a lot to make this episode work for me. If SGA wasn't cancelled, I would be looking forward to him showing up again.
- I liked Keller a lot this episode, too. I'm coming to the realization that I like/dislike her depending on who's writing her. Here she was capable and competent. Loved the look between her and Ronon in the infirmary. I like Ronon/Keller. If romance needs to happen, I'd like it to be between the two of them.
- Ronon, Rodney, Keller, and the final scene. What is this, a teen movie? Someone just needs to make a bet and bring out the dowdy chicks inner hottie and basically you've got any number of movies from the 90s. Geez. To which my mother points out that neither Rodney nor Ronon are exactly the most emotionally mature guys in the universe. Still.
I think it should turn out that Keller is having a torrid affair with Chuck. Or Lorne. Ronon and Rodney off "competing" for her? She's off getting it on with someone else.
Which only makes me think of Rodney and John competing for the blonde's attentions in "Inferno" and how they were always much more interested in the competition than in the prize. (I don't feel comfortable using "competition" and "prize," but that's what it boils down to when you strip everything else away.)
Anyway. Ronon's look at the end? His little confident smirk? He knows it's just a matter of time before John makes a move or Rodney finally steps a foot on the clue bus. Then he and Keller can...Oh, there you go. He and Keller are together and are just messing with John and Rodney so that they finally do something about the unresolved feelings between the two of them.
::shrug:: It could happen. In fanfiction.
