Indiana Jones
Jun. 8th, 2008 02:10 pmMom, Dad, and I saw Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull yesterday. I thought it was big, dorky fun. But I love Indiana Jones and that sort of thing. I even enjoy the National Treasure movies. What can I say? I'm a sucker.
I have a couple of specific things to say about the movie.
First off, the aliens. Okay, so at first I kept waiting for someone to come up with another explanation for the crystal skulls and the longer the plot went on without one, the more I was going, "Really, Steven? Aliens?" But this film really is Speilberg and Lucas doing what they want to do because they can. That's fine with me because, like I said, it was big, dorky fun.
As the alien explanation became the actual explanation, I was thrown a little. I just wasn't expecting them to go in that direction. But then I had to remind myself that, hey, the Ark of the Covenant melted people's faces off so maybe aliens weren't so far-fetched. Not to mention the fact that it's not the first time they've been used to explore the origin of various ancient cultures.
Which reminds me that I was reading somewhere (or did I hear it on TV?) about aliens and archeology not really mixing. Except for the fact that the idea of aliens seeding culture isn't a new one. At least that's a loose connection between the two. But then there's also SG-1 where aliens and archeology were linked very nicely. The whole series, starting with the movie, is based on Daniel being convinced that aliens built the pyramids.
And speaking of that connection, the whole time Cate Blanchett's character was calling Indiana "Dr. Jones" in the warehouse at the beginning, I kept waiting for "Dr. Jackson."
So if I love SG-1 so much, I feel like I can't get too tweaky about Indiana Jones meeting some aliens.
It's also not like the idea was completely unfamiliar to me since
01100100 wrote a really fantastic SG-1/Indiana Jones crossover AU, Maut Ka Mandir. It's a brilliant blend of the two and oh so much fun to read.
Anyway, so the movie wasn't the best one, but it was still fun and enjoyable (as long as you could suspend your disbelief). And it was just nice to see the characters again. Especially since this is the first time I've actually been old enough to experience one of these movies on the big screen. Very cool.
I knew Mutt was going to end up being Indy's son. But for whatever reason I never considered the possibility of Marion being his mom. Until he and Indy were in the restaurant and it hit me. Duh.
The only thing I did really have issues with that I can't hand-wave or explain away was Cate Blanchett's role. It was just...too much? When she first appeared, all I could think was "Gee, it's Cate Blanchett with a Russian accent." For me, it was a case of being unable to separate the character from the actress. Also, almost too much of a caricature.
Oh! There was also a fun moment containing Alan Dale and the Janitor from Scrubs! Like Bill Smitrovich and Tim Guinee showing up in Iron Man.
