Torchwood - "From Out of the Rain"

BBC America has caught up with my lazy Torchwood viewing habits. I love TW, I do, but I've recently been distracted by other really shiny, shiny things. Which I shall post about in the next day or two, once I collect my thoughts.

Anyway. Finally saw "From Out of the Rain." Was prepared to be spooked and then just wasn't that impressed. I mean, it wasn't bad. I just didn't think it was one of their better ones. For one, the balance of exposition and action was off. There was a whole lot of sitting around talking about stuff and then not a whole lot of doing. So the end where Ianto takes off with the flask and then gets caught by the bad guy? I should have been more involved, more worried, but I wasn't. There had been so little action leading up to the climax that when it arrived I felt more like, "Oh, are we here already? Carry on." Which ended up ruining the whole "We only saved one" moment after Ianto caught the flask again because all I could think about was whether or not the actors ever feel really silly saying some of the things they say. Kind of sad considering I thought Ianto was lovely.

That was something else that I thought was interesting. Ianto seemed, to me anyway, to be the only one really sort of invested in the plot. And that could be because they were only at the theatre in the beginning because of him and then his local knowledge. But it still felt like everyone else was just kind of doing their job and he was slightly more emotionally involved.

Could be, though, that I've just become more aware of this sort of thing at the moment as [livejournal.com profile] trademybike has finally started watching the show and commented that Ianto and Gwen seem to be the most emotional. Which I think is true to a point as Tosh and Owen certainly get their own moments later on. And Jack, too. But I still refuse to seriously put "Ianto" and "pansy" in the same sentence. All I can think of now is Wesley telling Gunn on Angel, "My ass is not pansy." Aw, Wesley.

But now with Kasey watching TW, I was trying to tell her why I dislike Gwen so much and listing the various things that annoyed me in the first one or two episodes when I realized that, wow, maybe that dislike is kind of petty and I should re-think it. Somehow I'd forgotten what she does later to Rhys with the retcon and realized that no, I can pretty much dislike her and not feel too bad about it. Because that was still a bad idea and she still shouldn't have done it. Still can't believe I forgot. I blame the wedding. It distracted me.

But yeah. "From Out of the Rain." Pretty entertained, but generally unimpressed. Ianto certainly looked good in that suit though. The color was lovely. Of course, this can usually be said.
