[livejournal.com profile] olivelavonne has a coworker who watches Torchwood but was put off by the turn in Jack and Ianto's relationship in "Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang" and is thinking about dropping the show because of it. Meanwhile, I'm just kind of scratching my head going, "What?"

I understand that not everyone wants to see two guys in a sexual relationship on their TV, that they're uncomfortable with it or they think it's wrong or whatever. Clearly I'm not and I don't. But I don't understand why you'd stop watching an enjoyable, fictional hour of TV because a small aspect of it doesn't necessarily agree with you. Of course, this is coming from someone who was seriously appalled by Nip/Tuck and could barely look at the screen, but still came back for the next episode.

I mean, sure, you shouldn't watch something that you don't like, but at the same time there is so much more going on than just Jack and Ianto. It's not the main plot.

Then there's the whole point that it's not like the office scene came completely out of the blue. What show as the coworker watching last season? Has he not noticed Jack flirting with everything that moves?

I sort of want to know what he thought, if anything, about "Greeks Bearing Gifts" and Tosh and Mary. Is it okay to watch two women have a sexual relationship but not two men? Does Mary's status of guest character change anything?

I feel kind of bad judging this guy that I don't know, but it's disappointing to hear that someone a friend enjoys conversations with about the show has backed away from it because of something that makes a lot of other people pretty gleeful. Especially because I've waited through several shows to finally get one that included diverse sexual relationships and didn't make a big deal about them.

Though I'd much rather him stop watching than continue and bash it. And it's all a moot point for me since this is someone I will never talk to. But I want my friends to be surrounded by people who are appreciative and fun!

Why can't everybody be open-minded and reasonable?

If everyone were open-minded and reasonable, who would we have to look down on?

Pfui. There you go making sense and stuff. :p

But we look down on the stupid people. D'uh. Also the ones that use textspeak in their real, daily lives.

Does it make me a hypocrite to not be open-minded to non-open-minded people?

It's not that you're not open minded to them. You hear what they have to say before calling them complete, useless idiots. I've never known you to look down on someone without some basis of fact first.

Wow. We sound like horrid people. Yay!
