SGA - "Outcast"

When the title came up Mom asked, "Why didn't they just call it 'Black Sheep?'"

This was another one of those episodes I was wary about considering the previous lack of backstory for John. As much as I want to know more about them, once the writers commit that limits speculation and possibilities. However, I was very happy with what they did. We got information, but it was all vague in some way, leaving plenty of room for more to be added later and for fans to run with it in the meantime.

So, some thoughts:

- Ronon watched Blades of Glory? I kind of got the feeling it was by himself, since John was explaining it after the fact instead during. I wonder if someone's made Ronon a list of movies to see. And if he's just getting whatever movies they have around Atlantis, who's the Will Ferrell fan?

- As soon as they showed John packing for his trip I crossed my fingers and hoped Rodney would show up. And then he did! He even tried to take time off to go with John! But instead he has to stay and take care of the kids on Planet KidKill because, I'm sure, Zelenka has locked himself in the lab and refused to help.

And then Rodney tried to talk about feelings and I totally thought he was going to say "If you want a hug" for a second there. But the fact that he was going to try to talk about feelings despite the fact that he and John are both really, really bad at that, well, that totally makes up for the no hugging.

- After the commercials, I was just curious about why Ronon went with John to his father's funeral. But since Rodney was busy and Teyla was apparently taking it easy somewhere, it totally made sense that Ronon would go with him. The team certainly wasn't going to let him go alone. I loved how Ronon was very matter-of-fact and just went.

- Dave. I kind of want John to name a really awful Wraith Dave and Ronon to say, "Isn't that your brother's name?"

- Dave's "right" when John introduced Ronon as a civilian contractor with the Air Force kind of cracked me up.

- I actually liked what we got to see of Nancy. She reminded me a little bit of Allison on Eureka actually, now that I think about it. And I liked that she was clearly an intelligent woman and tried to do some digging into John's current activities.

At one point, when she was getting out of the car, John said something about, "Well, you know me." She responded with, "Yes, I do. That's the problem." At least, I think that's what she said. Mom said something at the same time and I wasn't paying as much attention as I would have liked.

Anyway, this made me want to draw crazy parallels between characters and situations. You've got John and Nancy and Nancy basically saying that knowing John and his issues and his inability to open up and talk about things was a problem. Then you've got Rodney and Katie who broke up after Katie gets to witness Rodney in full doom-and-gloom mode which is a problem for her. Granted, they're different situations, but I can't help seeing them and imagine the lack of honesty that would be in both relationships and then look at John and Rodney and how they just understand each other and I want to jump up and down and say, "See! See! They're so much better off with each other!"

In other words, I'll twist anything to fit my "Sheppard and McKay are meant to be" mentality. It makes things more interesting for me.

And, like I said, I could be completely wrong about all of that and the basis for the thinking because there were other things going on and I missed it. Sometimes watching this show without the ability to pause and rewind drives me crazy.

- What I really want to know is what the timeline of their relationship/marriage was like. Mostly, when did they get divorced?

- I really liked Ava and the fact that they stuck her in a virtual reality in the end. Much better than completely scraping her or letting her go free, since this leaves doors open for future complications.

- BATES. I knew Bates was going to be back sometime this season, I just didn't realize it was going to be tonight. So when he showed up on the Apollo I had a moment where I didn't quite recognize him and then he and John shook hands and I sort of made some weird, high-pitched noise. It was really surprisingly good to see him again, all cool and relaxed and happy. And no sign of any problem with Ronon being an alien.

Oh, Bates. Come back again sometime.

Also, I now kind of want to see Barrett and Bates work together.

- Oh, Dr. Lee. With your sunburn. Hee. I kind of kept waiting for them to mention Rodney, though, in the capacity of, "What would McKay do?" But it's fine they didn't, since Bill's shown himself plenty competent.

- That scene with Dave at the end? I don't know how I feel about that. I mean, good for John for going back and having that talk with him like he said he would, but Dave also seemed a lot more open to John. So maybe that was because it had been a couple of days since the funeral and he was slightly less stressed? Which, okay, has moved me from having problems with it into appreciating it, but I still would have liked to have seen more between them.

So yes, I quite enjoyed this one. At one point, though, Mom asked me why they'd made the Replicator and I couldn't answer her. Because they could? I had to remind her that sometimes (a lot of the time) you just have to go with the flow and not think too hard about the plot. Also, it's character stuff that sticks in my head. Certain types of plot (like anything to do with politics in movies, for example) I kind of tend to let slip by.

This whole episode, though, is the sort of thing that makes me long for scenes (or fic) where outsiders get to see John and Team kicking ass and taking names. Because that would totally do things to their views of those people and I love that change from "You're a loser" to "you saved my life" and the respect that could bring.
