Torchwood - "Sleeper"

Forget plot, I'm all about the characters.

Though the arm thing with the aliens? Really bothered me. But I have issues with certain kinds of skin stuff. I say it all goes back to being scarred by nature shows that feature the Surinam toad. ::shudder::

Anyway. Seriously. Plot? This is just one of those shows where I can pretty much ignore the plot and focus on characters, which works fine for me (most of the time). And basically I'm left loving the episode for the simple fact that what there was of Ianto was pretty freaking fantastic. I mean, I loved the rest, but Ianto was just...not holding back in the snark department and it was completely delicious.

Loved Jack, too, but mostly within his relations to Ianto. The way he'd react to him, like he was a bit off-kilter, was wonderful and interesting. There's this sense that Ianto's making him work for a continued personal relationship, like if Jack's still interested after the snark and the comments then Ianto's good with that. And, oh, I actually had a moment of "did he just say that?" after the manners in bed conversation. I'm not used to television going in this direction!

Though I was a little curious about the last look between Jack and Ianto near the end, while Jack is putting his shirt on and Ianto's fiddling with...something. It was interesting.

I had something more I wanted to say here, some observation about Jack or Jack/Ianto, but it has now completely slipped my mind. Damn.

Oh! Just remembered while I was thinking about Gwen...So, strange as it may be, I liked Jack's attitude as they probed Beth's mind. Not that different from torture, and we know he's done that before.

Tosh and Owen are great. Tosh, Owen, and Ianto are hilarious. The team is made of win.

Gwen is made of compassionate tears and a Welsh accent. I want to like her, I really do, but she just...continues to be lackluster and uninteresting to me. And we get it; Gwen cares for people.

Now that I think about it, wasn't this a lot like "Day One" from last season? What with the girl and the alien and Gwen wanting to protect her because, oh dear, she's just a poor girl who can't help herself. Which isn't to say that I didn't feel bad for Beth tonight, just that I'm over Gwen feeling bad for everybody.

And, sure, Jack may need someone to pull him back from going completely dark sometimes, but there are also times when you've just got to kill the alien that's trying to take over the planet and stop making sad, pleading eyes at it.

But, yeah. Overall it just fills me with glee. Could just be because it's shiny and new. I'd also forgotten how quickly the show can move. But I'm used to seasons running for twenty episodes and not thirteen.
