"I smell like a yak!"
Sep. 12th, 2005 02:56 pmWatched Stargate, the movie, last night with Mom. It was on Spike TV (imagine that). It was a lot of fun watching it and having all of the, well, not background because it happened after, but the expanded knowledge of the SG 'verse under my belt.
Didn't get to see quite all of it. Came in just as they were locking chevron six into place for the first time. Was disappointed at missing Daniel's "I'm smarter than all y'alls" spiel. Alas.
A couple of weeks ago I came across James Spader on Boston Legal and, for curiosity's sake, stopped for a moment and watched a little. Not because I wanted to know what was going on, but because I wanted to know just *how much* Michael Shanks can do the James Spader thing. Got my answer then. Got my answer again last night.
It's *scary*. Just scary.
They are both Dr. Daniel Jackson. About the time in the movie when they first head up the ramp to go through the gate for the *very. first. time* (eee!), I turned to Mom and brought this up. I can see the Daniel in the movie as the Daniel on the show and vice versa. And I guess that's because Michael Shanks was hired for his James Spader-like ability (at least, so I've heard). It also must be because, well, it's *Daniel*. And I know that's kind of, well, a stupid comment, but it's also true.
Because Jack O'Neil(l)? Doesn't transfer. You have Jack O'Neil of the movie, with very little sense of humor. Which *could* be attributed to the fact that he recently (how long had it been?) lost his son in a really horrible way. And then there's the whole one-L/two-Ls thing. And Richard Dean Anderson playing him instead of Kurt Russell. I can't see O'Neil lasting on SG-1 like O'Neill has. It would certainly be different. And I bet a few years with that team would have softened him up a bit.
So, anyway, while Daniel is obviously the same character, Jack's not. And it was kind of weird. But also fun to sort of see glimmerings of a possible friendship between them.
Although, when Jack's looking for Daniel? *That* exchange was very O'Neill-esque.
O'NEIL: I'm on Planet X lookin' for a dweeb who wears green fatigues. He wears glasses. (makes glasses with hands)
SKAARA: (copies O'Neil)
O'NEIL: He has long hair. (mimes long hair)
SKAARA: (salutes)
O'NEIL: And he (pretends to sneeze) sneezes.
SKAARA: Ich! (clucks like a chicken)
O'NEIL: Chicken. Chicken! Yes, Chicken Man!
And I loved the bit when they meet Kasuf. Can't find a script online though, so this is from memory.
KASUF: (gestures for them to go with/follow him)
DANIEL: I think he wants us to go with him.
O'NEIL (pretty sure it was him): How do you know that?
DANIEL: Because (gestures for them to go with/follow) he wants us to go with him.
It made me laugh. Because it was so *very* Daniel. And very Jack/Daniel. So the dynamic was kind of there, even then. And who doesn't know the sign for "come with/follow me?" It's universal! Literally, apparently.
Fun movie. I want it on DVD.
OMG. Michael DeLuise is David in this episode of Lost ("Confidence Man")! Did a double-take. Saw him, went "wait a tic," thought he looked familiar (from SG-1), then realized he looked like a DeLuise and, bam!, he is! Neat.
