So, I've seen the trailer for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire now. As well as the trailer for The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.
Thoughts?
Total non-reaction to GoF. Chills, and I mean goosebump-raising *chills* to TLWW. Didn't even get chills over Serenity. That was more of a full-on freak-out moment.
Sorry, Harry, but it looks like you're being out grown.

Date: 2005-05-11 07:48 pm (UTC)TLWW, on the other hand? So cool. Haven't read all of the first book, but I own the older BBC live-action productions and used to watch them all the time when I was little. And there's something very grand and sweeping about TLWW and Narnia that I'm liking a little bit more now than the whole doom-n-gloom feeling HP has been generating.
Or something. I'll be seeing both, like, opening weekend though. :) Because I can.

Date: 2005-05-12 01:31 am (UTC)I was just talking to my mom about this and one thing that came up was how much I always end up liking Edmund and, later, Eustace. They start out as little jerks/prigs, do some really stupid, not good stuff and then realize the error of their ways. They actually grow up. (At least in the movies, which seemed fairly faithful.) I don't think Draco is ever going to grow up. JK Rowling has repeatedly not allowed Draco any kind of space to develop into more than just the annoying jackass bully. I'm not saying he should get redemption or join the good side of the force. Rather, he could at least be an annoying jackass bully *with depth*.
But, of course, the whole redemption thing is because of Lewis and the Christian allegory that is his Chronicles of Narnia. Also, he's probably the better writer of the two of them in the long run. I think this summer I'm going to read the entire series. I've read some of them before, several years ago. What's the right order to read them in?
Also, sorry this turned into a novel. I just can't stop myself from going on and on sometimes. :)
Oh, and I heard that the rights have been bought to do all seven books, but they're waiting to see how the first one does before doing anything about the others.

Date: 2005-05-12 05:05 am (UTC)1 The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
2 Prince Caspian
3 The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
4 The Silver Chair
5 The Horse and His Boy
6 The Magicians Nephew
7 The Last Battle
the orfer they put them in today is:
1 The Magicians Nephew
2 The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
3 The Horse and His Boy
4 Prince Caspian
5 The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
6 The Silver Chair
7 The Last Battle
The bottom list is the chronicles in chronological order. I read them in this order and it doesn't make as much sence and the impact of what happens in The Last Battle isn't the same if you read The Magicians Nephew a long time ago... trust me!
and hte BBC movies are fairly faithful, I have only seen THe Sliver Chair and that was late at night a really long time ago, but from what I remember it was good...
And the bit about Draco, I am going to be really sad if he does just stay a stagnat charater because there is a lot that one can do with him and it would be a loss if he just stays a little brat for all 7 books.
Yay for long comments!

Date: 2005-05-12 06:20 pm (UTC)I've been continually disappointed that Draco hasn't shown any signs of growth. I almost want to say that it would be somewhat cliched for him to be redeemed, but change does not equal redemption. He could become actually evil instead of just a brat. Or he could show some sort of emotion other than pride and arrogance and cruelty. No one is that horrible all of the time. You're right; there's *so much* JKR could do with him. I hope she does something interesting...
Although, I guess you could argue that the books are from Harry's POV and as such we're getting a limited perspective. He's biased against Draco and so is then interpreting Draco's behavior in a certain light and we're only getting his interpretation of events...Or something. I'll bet money that's not the case though. That's a little too deep. But sometimes I do wonder just how skewed the perspective is because we *only* get Harry's POV.
I love long comments. Like I said, I just can't shut up! So, yea! I'm glad you're in there with me!
