Supernatural - "Mannequin 3: The Reckoning"

I didn't think it was a bad episode, I just watched the whole thing with this face :|

That sort of covers it. Also, when it ended my mom went, "It's over?! I was waiting for it to start." I think that also covers it. She also called part of it pedestrian and juvenile, so. Yeah.

After thinking about it for the last few days--and even during that one viewing--I have no real issues with Dean/Lisa, save for the fact that they keep bringing it up. And that's not even really an issue, that has more to do with the fact that they keep bringing it up to tell us the exact same things. Dean is depressed, Dean doesn't like hunting much anymore, Dean would like a life with Lisa and Ben, Dean doesn't feel like he can have that life.

Life sucks.

The end.

Y'know. Essentially.

I like Lisa. I've always liked Lisa. My only problem with that particular plot lies primarily in the time frame. I have difficulty seeing them establish the sort of relationship they have--or we're told they have--in the year we skipped. We don't see them work through anything except for this, now.

The montage tried to show them being a happy family, but see...I want to see them working through the shit, too. I want to see them get to the happy family point, not just skip to it. Also that was just lulzy. (Mom pointed out that they slowed Dean down a bit in the Impala footage. She wondered if perhaps this was because they were running short.)

I don't know. I have feelings and I'm not very articulate about them. Mostly I want to shake Dean and tell him that it's okay to want things for himself, too.

And while I was kind of all "blah, they're doing the Parent Trap thing," I was glad Ben said what he did. Dean needs to hear stuff like that. He isn't just making himself unhappy here.

So there's that. The reason I was generally unimpressed and unhappy with the episode had everything to do with Rose and her plot. My reaction to the circumstances of her death consisted mainly of, "Really. Really. This is where we're going. Really." You know, if you want to piss me off? Add some bullying of a social awkward person to your plot and BAM, you've most likely succeeded. (This was, btw, the part my mom called pedestrian and juvenile.)

Anyway, it made me really angry and disappointed that it was the route they were going and that sort of ruined wanting to watch it play out. Though in retrospect I do think it was interesting (and unintentionally hilarious) to have a haunted kidney. There's something serious and intriguing there, and genuinely frightening, that I can't quite put my finger on to put in to words.

I did like that it opened up the question of what they were doing and who they were really saving, but then it didn't get addressed as much or as deeply as I would have liked.

Other than that...I was a little disappointed that we went from Sam waking up to, hi, case! I don't know. I felt like given the way the last episode ended, we would have gotten a little bit more. Like an episode addressing it or something. But that's not really how SPN handles these things, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

That last sentence isn't a judgement. It kind of sounds like it. It's just they do tend to have these big things going on that they then address for a scene and just don't mention for the rest of the episode.

Anyway. Bottom line is basically that a lot of this episode didn't work for me, though not the parts that I previously might have expected. It's not really an episode I'll be watching again.

First off hi, haven't commented in a while, I know, but I'm finally on spring break so I can be more sociable now XD
2nd: We agree on a lot of things but still differ on why we didn't like the episode. You mention Lisa/Dean and I completely agree, I like Lisa, she is awesome, but I'm tired of them always throwing her at us like she's the only solution/way for Dean to have a normal life. I get it, she already has everything set up, the house, the kid, but seriously, can't Dean have his own house/kid/wife? And Ben...he just ticked me off this episode. His whole ode to family just drove me up the wall when you consider that Dean's only been there for a year, is not his biological father and, yeah sure he was the only good male role model he's had, but Dean has confessed he spent the good part of the year burying his guilt in alcohol and violence. (Plus, in Bobby's own words: http://hyuuman.tumblr.com/post/3392615879/padfootpretentious-yes-this-was-worth)

And I'm not too sure of Dean being tired of hunting considering he never stopped during that year. I don't approve of Lisa because she won't even adapt to the circumstances around her. Dean has appeared on her doorstep, a famous hunter and, instead of...I dunno buying a couple of guns, making her house a bit demon/ghost proof, she continues to live as if nothing happened. That's nice, I'm not saying you shouldn't, but when Dean's in your freakin' house, assume shits going to knock at your door so be prepared. T_T

I also feel they keep adding in filler episodes when they have two HUGE problems to deal with. 1-The CIVIL WAR in heaven and 2- MOTHER. Mother's pretty cool btw, I mean, I know you don't approve because she's another Lilith 2.0, but she's the first female ULTIMATE bad guy since the series started. The final boss's are usually men so I'm really excited to see how they're going to make her bad-ass. (Yellow-eyes, Alastair, Lucifer) And yay for gaming lingo...

Though I'm not complaining about their next episode, did you see the preview??? It looks awesome!!!!!

As for the hunting aspect of this episode, yeah it was kinda...lacking in creativity but the DOLLS FREAKED ME OUT. I dunno about you,but that last one and her smile. HOMG.

I just want them to go back to the souls you know, Death gave Dean a mission, why is it taking him so long to start??!? And they could, while developing this plot, throw in some awesome women hunters that could be a good option for Dean. He can have his white picket fence, you just need someone who'll build him a panic room to celebrate their anniversary you know? Someone who'll pick up a gun and fight with him, salt the windows and blast them demons to hell and all. I understand that SPN is all heterosexual and macho (Dean/Cas :<) but that doesn't mean there can't be kickass women.

Kay I think I'm done my rant, I'm gonna go read your Misha/Jensen porn now...<3

Yea, spring break! \o/

I agree with some of what you say, especially about the filler episodes. I mean, seriously? What are they doing? It's like last season when there was, y'know, the apocalypse and we'd go whole episodes without them mentioning it or worrying about it. Apparently, anyway. Or at least it would be very brief. I was hoping to get a little more of Sam and Dean dealing with Sam's collapse, but I suppose that's hoping for a lot considering that would mean they'd have to actually communicate clearly with one another.

As for Lisa...she's not the only option for Dean having a "normal" life, no, but I disagree about Dean having his own wife/kid/house. Family doesn't have to be blood--as we've seen with Bobby and, I like to think, Cas. If Dean loves Lisa and Ben, then they're family, too. Didn't Bobby tell Dean, "Family doesn't end with blood"? (Plus what about adoptive families? Foster families?)

...she won't even adapt to the circumstances around her.

I don't think that's entirely true. I don't think she was given the opportunity to adapt. Dean did mostly stop hunting during that year, and I don't think he wanted those two parts of his life to combine. He put Lisa and that life up on a pedestal and didn't want to dirty it with everything else he deals with on a daily basis. So adapt or not, I don't think she was ever really given the choice.

Of course I think they've both kind of...romanticized their view of the other, which is partly why the relationship didn't work and why I don't think it ever really will (besides the fact that the writers won't give it the attention it deserves to be a full-fledged plot point).

I know you don't approve because she's another Lilith 2.0

That's not true. I approve of her, I just think that turning God the Father into the "good guy" against Mother the "bad woman" is potentially dangerous territory. I never thought she was Lilith 2.0. I'm excited to see where they take her. And where the season is going with her AND the civil war AND Sam.

I just would love for them to get back to the stuff with the souls and Sam and the angels and Mother and all of the BIG plot stuff, y'know?
