Eric Kripke may lead adaptation of Neil Gaiman's Sandman.

I am not excited about this.

I would perhaps feel more excited were Gaiman involved. Perhaps, as the link states, he'll become involved later down the line. As it stands, I mostly feel anxiety. And a little bit of dread.

Me too. I know Kripke is a big Gaiman fanboy, but have my concerns about him being able to do the writing justice with Gaiman not there; Gaiman's plots are always very tight, but Krikpe's not so much. Not to mention if they made it live action they would have to use a lot of special effects and tv special effects are very hit or miss. Finally, please don't let it end up on network tv instead of cable.

I was going to agree with the plots, and then I saw the comment on special effects, and well. Basically I agree with this entire comment. You've hit several of the main problem areas.

Sometimes being a huge fanboy doesn't make you the most qualified. I mean, it certainly can help to have someone in charge who loves and respects (hopefully) the source material, but sometimes that just muddies the water. Whenever I think non-fanboys shouldn't be in charge, I look at the reboot of Star Trek and how well that worked for me, how much I loved it, and see the benefit of a fresh eye.

I sort of live in fear of this coming out like one of those really clunky miniseries on SyFy. Some of those turn out amazing, some of them fall horribly flat.

Sandman could be really great, but there is A LOT that could go wrong. Hopefully they hired Kripke because he knows what he's doing having all that practice with SPN.

Yeah, it really could go either way. I guess only time will tell.

Either that or it ends up on Fox and gets canceled after five out-of-order episodes. *shudders*

I like Kripke, I do, and I think it's clear I love Supernatural, but I'd really just rather no Sandman adaptation at all.

That's my feeling as well - I've wanted an adaptation forever, but as a TV series? I'm just really uncertain where the storyline will go once they've moved beyond the source material, and also whether the characters will be sweetened up to make them more TV-friendly.

I don't begrudge Kripke getting a chance to do a project with a huge cast, rather than just Sam & Dean, but I wish it didn't involve a comic I love so much.

Also, PLEASE GOD don't let this air on the CW. I'll be slightly less anxious if it turns out to be a HBO project.

Perhaps they mean miniseries? Although, how do you fit everything that makes Sandman Sandman into a mini? Or a movie? How do you decide what parts you can cut and what parts you can't? (Why am I thinking of Tom Bombadil in LotR?)

I do want Kripke to get a chance to do something different, but oh. Not this. There is so much room for disaster. And while he's a decent storyteller, he's not on par with Gaiman.

I said it above: I'm scared this will turn out being like one of those minis on SyFy. It could either be awesome, or fall completely flat. Semi-lame special effects and all.

That was pretty much my reaction as well. D: I have yet to read Sandman, but I love Neil Gaiman's work and I'm very leery of Kripke at the helm of something that big.

I loved Sandman and while I know Kripke is a fan, and while it would be nice for him to do something new, I'd just rather they didn't.

Does Kripke know Sandman has enough angst as it is and that he doesn't need to make it go to eleven? I mean, I love SPN and I love Sandman but I somehow don't get a chocolate and peanut butter vibe off this combo.

Kripke's a fan, so one would hope he's aware that he wouldn't need to angst things up any.

That's a great analogy.
