You Could Have It All
Apr. 20th, 2004 03:48 pmHas anyone here seen Johnny Cash's music video of "Hurt" (which is actually a cover of a Nine Inch Nails song)?
I remember the first time I watched it was on the country top twenty countdown on CMT over Christmas break. It was number one on the countdown. Mom said that I had to see the video because it was really good, so I agreed and decided to sit through it because I trust her judgment. I figured, yeah, okay, Johnny Cash is great and dead and what will I get out of this video?
It gave me goosebumps. It's amazing. The lyrics and his voice and the music and the video itself. It's very affecting and, to me at least, very haunting. The video is comprised of him just singing the song alone as well as clips of his wife and himself through their careers and lives as well as various other things. So, lovely visually.
But it's the strangest thing to watch because it's as though he knew. I mean, he did know because everyone knew he was sick and on his way out, but it's like he really knew. I find it hard to explain, but the video is like a tribute to someone gone, made by someone else to honor that person....That doesn't really explain it. *shrug* It's a goodbye. He just knew.
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know
Goes away in the end
You could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way
Heh. Only I could make an entire post about Johnny Cash. I've been d/ling videos and that was one of them I watched and it was just really sad and I had to share. I'm fully aware that I'm strange.
