SPN Ficlet: Small Things, Dean/Castiel

The smallest of things can carry the biggest of revelations.

Dean hears a noise beside him, one that sounds suspiciously like a laugh, and turns his head to look because he’s sure his ears deceive him.
Except that only convinces him he needs to get his eyes checked because what he’s seeing…he can’t be seeing.
Dean blinks twice to clear his vision, but nothing changes. Then the sound comes again and Dean is forced to believe what’s before him is real, not a mistake or a hallucination.
You can’t blame him for doubting, though; he’s never seen—or heard—Cas laugh before. A slight huff of amusement once or twice, sure, but never a full belly-laugh. Which this isn’t, not even close, but compared to Cas’ default setting, it might as well be.
Dean watches him, knows he’s staring but really, Cas does that to him all the time; Dean should get his turn. He’s not even sure what fills Cas with so much…glee? Yeah, maybe it’s glee. All he knows is that Cas is, for once, enjoying himself completely. Halle-fuckin’-lujah.
He’s grinning now, and Dean can’t look away, he can’t look away at all because Cas’ nose scrunches, it actually friggin’ scrunches when he does that. Like there is not enough room on his face for that much happy otherwise.
And Dean, he’s—he can’t—he’s at a loss. It feels like he’s back in that barn, seeing Castiel’s wings for the first time: awed and struck dumb, confused, maybe a little afraid. Because this is new, and this is powerful, and Cas experiencing pure, unadulterated happy around him knocks Dean flat.
He feels like he’s been hit with a stick, or maybe the whole damn forest. Or lightning; lightning seems appropriate somehow, Cas bursting bulbs and throwing sparks around him.
It’s the biggest revelation over the smallest of things: Cas is happy, his nose scrunches when he smiles, and Dean cannot look away.
