Another Thought
Feb. 12th, 2010 09:48 amMostly just thinking out-loud here.
Wouldn't Castiel know if Dean was broken and/or dead inside?
Cas still seems to have faith in him. Focus on that, Dean!
Oh, but...
Hmmm. I was just thinking there might be doubt there now, because Cas has clearly developed feelings for both of the Winchesters (or so we've been told).
Though I don't think Castiel would reassure Dean unless it was the truth. He may be acting more human, but I don't think he grasps the concept of "lying to make someone feel better."
Anyway, these thoughts brought about because Castiel has actually seen Dean's soul, dragging him out of Hell and all that. And he's still sticking with him.
Also! Last night I kept wanting to run toward the "Dean wants God to tell him what to do" because God's the only one I could think of who might have answers. And who, strangely enough, I can see being unbiased. Only I kept getting stuck on, "Dean doesn't believe in God." Wouldn't this be a great opportunity for them to get back to Castiel's search for God and the use of Dean's amulet?

Castiel's line at the end ("That's not Sam in there") is probably as close as Castiel can get to a sympathetic lie. I love the scene in 4.03, where he touches Dean's arm after they've witnessed Mary making the deal with YED - because Castiel's support is shown by simply being there, not necessarily through words. But it wasn't enough to console Dean this time, and he turned away.

Okay, so it was sad in the episode, but that right there? Really hit it home for me. :( I wonder how Castiel feels, being unable to comfort the way he would like to? That line was a pretty clear attempt to offer some human comfort, and it was rejected. Another sign of how bad things have gotten for Dean (and everyone) and how much more human Castiel has become since the beginning of last season.

I think that's entirely possible. And, as you say, that Dean wasn't soulless either. Maybe he's just...suppressing it (or the thing that makes him human) because he thinks that's what he needs to do to get through?
Especially after losing Ellen and Jo. And now seeing Sam detoxing again...the people he cares about keep getting knocked down, and Dean takes that to heart. Those are his failures, too. Each one wrecks him a little more. So that guilt on top of everyone telling him that whatever makes Dean Dean is useless and unnecessary...I can see that pushing him to the edge.
That kinda got off track there. I don't know either! This show is going to drive me crazy!
